Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Just FYI for anyone needing to check their cables I've found you don't need to take out the entire console.

Before lifting it up, may want to just pull the center out and check there.

Check the transmission passenger side under the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A strange behavior just began with my transmission (2003 c4 6mt). I shift into first, but its not there. Moving into first feels the same as moving the lever side to side (no notch for first). If I try later, it may or may not find the gear without difficulty. It usually occurs with first, but has also happened with reverse and third. The car has 106k miles and the clutch was done 6k ago. Any thoughts?
Yup. Although, mine were dislodged under the center console.
Before lifting it up, may want to just pull the center out and check there. Pretty easy to do
Isn't lifting the car up far easier than pulling up the console?
I was eventually planning to tighten up my shifting by checking the alignment (got the shifter lock tool) but I'm
dreading
pulling up the console to get to them. If that's easier than lifting the car to look at the underside shift cables, maybe I'm dreading it for nothing.
Taking the center console out is pretty easy. The first time may be more of a struggle finding the fasteners, getting the right tools, but after you figure it out, it becomes a 5-10 minute job subsequent times.
It's rather easy. A handful of torx 20 screws and some pieces that snap off/on. Under the ashtray, in the center storage are 2 and a couple others (drawing a blank). Pull up the shiftboot.
Then should lift off and around the handbrake and shifter.
Below that, 4 nuts that hold on a cover over the cables.
Yup, gently pull up on the console and you'll find where its snugly held down by a few screws.
I agree with Ashai. I've seen some buddies have linkage issues underneath the car on the transmission. Couldn't shift properly. Apparently the linkages tends to pop off it's mount.
Just FYI for anyone needing to check their cables I've found you don't need to take out the entire console. Just remove the ash try and holder or the ash tray delete unit and you can get to the cables connecting to the shifter.
You can even adjust them from there too
