Read evidence and context

Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'd certainly do a PPI to make sure the CEL isn't something bigger but figured first check with the forum.

CEL Question
Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had a question about a CEL. I came across a really nice '03 996 however, it had the CEL on. Long story short, I had a relative check out the car earlier in the month and the CEL came on during test drive and he said it was idling kind of rough. Seller took car to get it assessed and shop reported that it pulled up stored misfire codes--no details on which ones. The shop explained (see below) on the report that this can occur when the car sits for a long period of time without driving, which the seller said it had been. Shop cleared the faults but when I went to look at the car and drive it a couple weeks later the CEL was on again but it drove nicely and there wasn't any rough idle. Just wanted to verify this explanation. I'd certainly do a PPI to make sure the CEL isn't something bigger but figured first check with the forum. Im7T64P.png

POST 2Original post

I call BS. My 996es sit more than they are driven and they never just magically throw error codes.

POST 3Original post

Naw, misfire codes usually happen because of aging/cracked coil packs.

POST 4Original post

In this case, I think you should read the newly on CEL code to see what it is. Otherwise, all comments are just wild *** guesses.

^^This^^... codes get thrown for a reason. These things rarely fix themselves - Caveat emptor...

POST 6Original post

Agreed....the lucky ones are the people who have misfires and the coil pack replacement fixes it. If it doesn't, it's basically a wild goose chase that rarely ends good.
