3) The gasket under/around the hood emblem doesn't fit right, which indicates it's been removed and replaced, not very well, during some paint work.

My bumper insert looks like that, a lot do, the plastic they used really seems to fade pretty bad regardless of miles.

It took me a few months, 95% of the messages were "is the IMS done?" and then they would disappear, wouldn't even bother to come to look and test drive it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

the most base model of any 996 i've seen, almost no options! and $10k in repairs/maintenance done in April, all the biggies (IMS/AOS/clutch/brakes/etc)
curious what this sells for in 3 days
Very interesting. Why would someone dump that much into a car and sell it a few months later? It's going to be hard to get a return unless the car was given to the seller. We'll see.
All North america 996's say C02 on them. It has nothing to do with their other options. It just means it is setup for federal regulation at a minimum.
I find this car interesting. Why on earth would a dealer spend 10K to sell a car for low 20's. That maintenance only adds a few grand to the price. It really makes no sense at all. Unless of course they bought the car super cheap. I doubt that too. Pretty sure the shop that did the work is on site or they have a deal with them and they get records with full pop prices on them and pay far less.
Maybe life got in the way or maybe they figured it would make the sale easier or higher? I sold a 2004 911 for a detailing client of mine, interior and exterior were both in excellent shape. It took me a few months, 95% of the messages were "is the IMS done?" and then they would disappear, wouldn't even bother to come to look and test drive it. Of course, once the eventual buyer did a PPI it came back almost flawless, only things noted were a few door dings and tires were a few years too old.
I hope they didnt put all that $ into this 996 to maybe distract an online auction buyer from an early stage engine issue or something else. Not making any personal accusations, just trying to think of alternative reasons.
Or maybe its just a great opportunity for someone to own probably the worlds only Zanzibar, zero option, 996.
Cant wait til auction ends.
My theory too. The difference between selling and not selling. Even if the seller takes an overall loss as long as they are recouping more than the 10K spent on maintenance (currently @ $14K now), they got some of the value of the car back in their pocket vs. being stuck in the car.
Realistically the should recoup some of it considering a car with potential issues addressed should go for less but it isn' always the case. I purchased mine without the IMS done but I negotiated about half the price of repairs out of it. I think the original asking price on mine was 21k or 22k and I got it for 18.5k. It was a low option 99, not zero but low has an LSD and 51k miles.
Looks like an okay car, but it's pretty clear it's been in a front-end accident and not repaired exactly right. Evidence:
1) The shut line between the hood and bumper isn't right. So at the very least the bumper's been removed and not replaced very well.
2) The insert for the air inlets is white/gray instead of black, which is weird, since that piece is black from the factory, and is a separate piece from the bumper cover. Not sure why somebody would have primed that, or painted it an odd color during a repair. There's no way that's sun fade, it's too light. Maybe it's an artistic choice and not an indicator of damage?
3) The gasket under/around the hood emblem doesn't fit right, which indicates it's been removed and replaced, not very well, during some paint work. Those can be a hassle to stretch/seat around the emblem; looks like whoever did this job didn't take the time.
4) The paint on the hood looks significantly more orange-peely than the rest of the car. Reflections are nowhere near as crisp on that surface as on others.
I was thinking very low 20’s too. I think the gallery has people convinced that color is super amazing. Plus there are no other real 996’s to compete with it for attention. Bat kinda sucks for sellers, because they will throw on several of the same cars at the same time. I had a 968 up last year and figured, oh great no competition! They run like four of those a year. So mines at no reserve and then two pop up with reserves within 48 hours. It wouldn’t surprise me if it got up to 24k just because there are no other comparable 996’s up.
Am I the only one IN AWE of the price for this car??
I dig the fresh maintenance but no suspension work that can cost $$$ at this mileage, previous body work, lack of options...
Neat color in my book but I'd rather have a black interior...
Need to polish up my car and set a reasonable reserve to see if theres any takers if thats the case LOL
Seems like a decent place to sell anything that even has a bit of a following. Can't beat $99 to list with all the traffic they are getting these days.
Seemed like a more than fair bid, including 5% and shipping, for a 95k mile base 01 996, with the work done to date. Surprised it didnt trade.
+1 Zanzibar
Agreed 100%. This seems like a more than fair price for this car, even net of the buyers fee. Not sure why BAT allowed the reserve to be set so high. I think Zanzibar is a great color but I would have been out at a lower number than this.
Daryll
In the 20s on this one. Maybe $18.5 but this was a good price and the dealer missed out on a sale. More than likely paid too much before all the work done. Also the paint was not great but I love the color. I bought mine off BaT and paid too much but got what I wanted without scouring the classifieds nationally.
Someone commented that the car was hammered.

Read through the service records this car was hammered. Several (at least 4) sets of brake pads and rotors, several underbody trays & fender liners, photo 164, 4 rims refinished twice, right rear quarter panel and passenger door body and paint work ($2,100) photo 151, and more.
LOL. And to think the seller put this in the comments too. That lady doctor must have a lead foot
"A bit of background on the ownership history we know this to be a two-owner car despite the carfax showing three owners. The second owner, a female physician based locally to us here in Maryland bought the car in 2004 and owned it lovingly until this year. She originally registered the vehicle to her medical practice in VA which accounts for Owner #2, before transferring the title to her home in MD. She took exceedingly good care of the car (as evidenced by the stack of records), treating it to every recommended service as needed at a local, trusted independent Euro specialist."
Would have just taken the 21k and called it a day. You are already out $100 for BAT and now whatever eBay charges you. 21k for a 2001 with 100k miles seems like a good deal for a seller but maybe I don't know enough.
