Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello. A friend of mine was generous enough to lend me his 996 while he is away on vacation. After I parked the car today, I came back to it and lost about 100-150mL of coolant out of the right front corner. I cleaned it up and checked it again about an hour later and the same volume has been coming out. Its quite clear that its from the front right radiator. I'm hesitant to start taking things apart on a car that isn't mine, but would like to get things sorted for him before he is back. I'm left with 2 questions. The car has a wide wheel setup that I noticed rubs hard on the fender liner at full lock. 1. Being that I just parked the car, and as a result had the wheels cranked, is there any possibility of hitting the coolant hoses and damaging them or knocking them off with the wheel or is there no real possibility of the wheel taking that path to contact. 2. If not, are there any possible parts that need replacement other than the radiator, upper and lower hose, and clamps? I'd just order the parts and have them available so we can install them when he's back. I'm very appreciative of getting to drive it and don't want him to have much downtime. Just trying to decide whether I should start pulling parts off in hopes of tightening something and saving it, or just get the parts here and not mess around. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks, Chris

POST 2Original post

The bumpers r pretty easy to pull. Remove the wheel and inner liner too. It should take less then an hour and inspect what u have going on. These cars have some age on them so a bad rad us not out of the question.

POST 3Original post

If it was my car, I'd be appreciative that you are willing to fix it, but would want you to consult with me before doing any work to my car.

Thanks, I did check it out online and its simple. Not ideal in my tiny underground parking, but life isn't always ideal circumstances I suppose. Oh absolutely. I have been in contact with him, and I only want to diagnose the problem. We will fix it together when he's back. We work on cars regularly (not that either of us are anything more than hobbyists) and I certainly understand the boundaries of what to do with someone else's car. Like I said I just really want to minimize the cars downtime, as he was generous enough to lend this to me while my e36 m3 was being fixed after a truck lost its load in front of me on the highway. Its been a cursed summer for me and cars.

In a hilarious turn of events, I pulled the bumper off and the leak is from the headlight washer! Its windshield wiper fluid, not coolant. Very happy I dove into it. Ill be telling my friend to use a different coloured windshield wiper fluid from now on!

Uh...windshield wiper fluid has a different smell and feel than coolant! If still in doubt it will taste different, as well. At least it wasn't a radiator!

There was no smell. I was confused at that originally, but when I see orange fluid coming out from behind a radiator it left me thinking it was just over diluted the last time coolant was put in. Also I wouldnt expect to see that much windshield washer fluid come from that area, as its coming from the headlight washers, which I havent used, didnt even know existed, etc as its not my car.

POST 8Original post

Orange Rainex Fluid,, same color as the Porsche coolant ,, awesome! Are the Porsche headlight washers like the BMW,, they just work when they feel like it if the wipers are running?

POST 9Original post

No they will only work when head lights r on and if u hit the switch. The tank does do over the wheel and the tubing goes behind the light. The tube should not leak unless the pump charges the line. I wonder if the tank cracked.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The leak was coming out of the washer nozzle (or pump below it) itself, dripping down the upper part of the air duct, pooling in the bumper and coming out where the bumper lip and fender liners meet. It was actually hilarious when I pulled the bumper off. Good news is my friend gets his car back with 100% of its coolant! The headlight washer kept a steady stream coming out until the washer fluid tank was bone dry, but it wasn't leaking at the hose connection to the washer. Its like the pump was constantly drawing fluid through.
