Hopefully it has had the coolant changed several times (don't believe Porsche's Life time coolant claim!), so it could be several types of coolant.

I need to top up my coolant. Tried doing a search on the subject but all of the information seemed old. Any current recommendations?

Porsche coolant only. Mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Mixing different types of coolant can leave you with jello. Porsche coolant...not all that expensive. but part of the price we have to pay.

You need to know what coolant you have in your system. Topping off with Porsche OEM coolant could be just as risky as top off with any other brand/type IF the coolant has been changed from original. To be safe just top off with distilled water until you are ready to flush/ change to known coolant brand/ type. Some times different brands even with the same type (OAT) don't play well together...

If you have a 996 it has to be at least 14 years old and maybe much older. Hopefully it has had the coolant changed several times (don't believe Porsche's Life time coolant claim!), so it could be several types of coolant. You might want to consider a total flush of the systems if you don't know the last time it was done. Adding distilled water is a option if you need to just top it off but before winter you should check the mix. As for Porsche coolant if you want to pay the Porsche Tax that is fine but you will be paying 2-3 times or more what you need to pay. There are several equivalent coolants to the Porsche brand. For my car I switched brands over 10 years ago when I had the engine out of the car for the first time. I have run Peak 50/50 since then and have had no problems.
