Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace syncros, spider gears, bearings, etc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend gear ratios somewhere' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have what they recommended for the gear ratios somewhere but decided against it.

Suggestion
I have never opened a Porsche transaxle but you maybe able to repair without cracking open the entire trans?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Guys!
Anyone had to rebuild their transmission yet?
I have about 65K miles and "on load" (gas pedal being applied) it is quiet but when I let go of the pedal and coast, it is really noisy.
Been having a problem for the last month or so where every once in a while it pops out of 1st as I'm letting the clutch out from a stop.
I am thinking the problem may be a worn 1/2 syncro.
has anyone had the transmission opened and repaired or do you think buying a rebuild would be smarter?
Pete
I had mine completely rebuilt... it grenaded during a track event... literally and not from misuse....
There are shops that do it...
I sent mine to a shop in AZ, USA and had them add a few track goodies while they were in there..... It actually cost less than a new one from Porsche...
Hergesheimer did the R & R and had the unit sent to a shop in AZ... Contact Mark or Laura there for more info....

The gearbox coupled with the LWFW is incredible at the track.....
I did not re-gear when I had it open.... too much $ and plus this car is still driven on the street some..... I have what they recommended for the gear ratios somewhere but decided against it.
I do remember it lowered the top end down to +/- 155 mph.... not that that was the deciding factor...
I did have an LSD installed at the time as well....

Went in for a bad pinion beairng (posted here somewhere). Replaced syncros, spider gears, bearings, etc. Nice and peaceful now and running great!
I'd appreciate a PM on this as well if you're willing to share. I posted a few days back that I was having 2nd gear synchro issues and would love to know what I can expect $$$ wise.
First off, I believe we are probably talking about a differential sound, not a transmission sound. I have never opened a Porsche transaxle but you maybe able to repair without cracking open the entire trans? Just a thought.
I would diagnose before plopping big $$$ down on a trans rebuild.
As far as the question of it being the diff or the in the tranny, the bearing on the output shaft at the pinion bearing end, the differential carrier bearings or the ring/pinion all have the opportunity to cause a whine under load (accel or decel). If the noise is audible at the same MPH regardless of gear, then the only way to determine the issue is to tear it down. The accel/decel aspect just tells you it happens when under load.
In my case it was the bearing at the pinion gear end of the output shaft.
To those who requested the PM, I'll try to get to it this weekend.
From what I learned, 1st and 2nd are Porsche design syncros. The rest are BorgWarner (if I recall correctly). I put OEM parts in for replacement. The dog teeth on 2nd were a little worn. I guess it's a common problem. I'm not sure if I'd want a hard material for these parts because then if there's a mis-shift and something chips a little you'll have hard particles floating around vs soft brass that more forgiving.
