Three new bolts were used for the intermediate shaft and four new bolts were used for the case bolts (above and below the crankshaft and two on the bottom exterior of the bellhousing) because the new bolts included threads and under head coated with sealant.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had my car up on the lift yesterday and noticed what looks like the RMS is sweating. I have the new rms and ims seals and bolts done before warranty ran out in 2006. At the time it was the latest 997 seal. I just want to confirm if its the RMS and not the IMS.

POST 2Original post

Correction: Didn't read... It's the last seal on the engine's crank, just behind the flywheel. Corrected - see below C.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is the IMS located any where near the RMS. I just don't want to think its the RMS if the IMS is leaking on it and causing it to look like the RMS is sweating. Anyways if the RMS is sweating then it looks like the new seal and all the new tools do not help.

POST 4Original post

the ims is located directly underneath the rms.... see the 3 bolts.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. So I can't assume by looking at just the underside of the car that it is the RMS leaking.

POST 6Original post

Ding- There it is. The diagram I had was weird. C.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 5341357

correct, the issue with the ims was that you had to replace the 3 bolts... they were not strong enough and would snap, but I believe that was the 99-01 only. Most likely its your RMS again. How many miles total did you have on your current RMS.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had my IMS bolts changed. The RMS was done June 06 and I put on 12000 miles since.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 5341392

The issue wasn't the strength of the bolts. Three new bolts were used for the intermediate shaft and four new bolts were used for the case bolts (above and below the crankshaft and two on the bottom exterior of the bellhousing) because the new bolts included threads and under head coated with sealant.
