Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've seen this happen before from the oil filter not being installed correctly.
Leading evidence: 'Install correctly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'electronic oil level gauge' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check connections' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Ive changed lots of oil pressure sensors for those complaints.

Suspected cause
I didn't think it was the oil pressure when they happened, I always thought it was the electronic oil level gauge, but maybe I thought wrong.

Suggestion
I am going to check the connections on the sending unit and if that does not work I will repalce the unit.

Suggestion
before you replace the sender try cleaning the electrical connections to the unit and putting some dielectric grease over them to prevent them from getting contaminated or corroded in the future.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This morning I get a message which is the oil symbol followed by the word failure accompanied by a tone. I look at the pressure gauge to see it reading zero. I pull over and as I am reaching for the key to shut down, the gauge returns to normal. It operates normally for the rest of the commute.
Could this be anything other than a problem with the pressure sensing unit?
It could be a problem with the oil pressure sensor. I wouldn't do anything about it until this happens again. Just make sure you check the oil level regularly.
I've had that exact same issue and meant to ask, but never did.
So far, I've had it about 3 times total, if I remember correctly, but they all occured over a long span of time in between them. I didn't think it was the oil pressure when they happened, I always thought it was the electronic oil level gauge, but maybe I thought wrong.
Well, they go away pretty fast, as soon as the next startup. No other signs or symptoms, so I kinda ignored it, but always keeping a watchful eye. Next time it happens I'll check the pressure gauge.
I decided I might look at the manual. The message I got means that the "oil pressure indicator is faulty." If the oil pressure were actually low, I would have gotten on instrument panel light apart from the computer message and a computer message of "engine oil pressure too low."
I may be even more confused now. Is this indicator the manual mentions the gauge in the instrument panel?
This is on an 03.
This has happened to tons of people and nobody I know has ever really figured out what it is. I had the dealer check it twice and they don't know. I've heard oil pressure sensor and the sending unit but there's nothing definitive. One thing I do know is I don't worry about it anymore. It still just about gives me a heart attack when it does happen, but that passes
Just agreeing with those previous. I hit zero twice in two years. Both times it jumped back in seconds. Has not happened again yet. Must be the sensor . . .
Ive changed lots of oil pressure sensors for those complaints. If the light comes on listen to the motor if theres no pressure, youll hear a lot of mechanical noise, lifters............. ect
You should also consider a possible issue with the oil filter. I would check the oil filter. I've seen this happen before from the oil filter not being installed correctly.
Thanks for al the replies. It happened again on the drive home. Similar to the prior time, again appearing only briefly. The full message on the computer is the oil symbol and the words "failure indicator." I am taking the car in on Friday. I'll post the result.
before you replace the sender try cleaning the electrical connections to the unit and putting some dielectric grease over them to prevent them from getting contaminated or corroded in the future. Worked for me
Hey I am new to the site. Long time BMW guy and just bought a 04 911 40th anniversary model. Great car, similar to my 04 M3, but a little faster and tighter in the corners!
I am getting the oil failure indicator with gauge variance, but oil level is good. The battery was replaced right before I bought the car, so I did a disconnect and reconnect last night to see if that would solve the issue. It did not.
Does anyone know of a DIY for checking the sending unit connection for the oil pressure gauge?
Thanks
When this starts it will go away for a while and then return more and more. I replaced mine when the light came on about one time in 7 days. Glad I did as the oil just started to leak at the terminals. So word to the wise is don't let it go toooo long as it is a DIY repair @ about $72.00 for a new sending unit.
Thanks for the quick responses and pictures. I am going to check the connections on the sending unit and if that does not work I will repalce the unit.
Oil Pressure/level sensor. It's a five minute job really as I just did it.
If you wish to take it to a shop.. I understand completely but really,.. all you need is either a 19mm or 3/4" crows foot wrench,.. a 1/4" socket with a 3-6" wobble extension.
My experience was after an oil change I went to run my car and on the road suddenly saw 0 pressure and 0 oil level.. being the guy I am I immediately started to wonder if the drain plug had fallen out (yep,.. I forget everything trying to rush through things)... as I was sucking leather up my backside.
I remembered that I have the LN Engineering IMS "sensor" which is a drain plug,.. with a wire attached so.. it can't come off.
After manually checking the level... read a lot online and it pointed to the oil-Press sensor. I ordered one.. I think it was like $30 online. In the meantime,.. I removed the two little wires going to it and cleaned up some of the corrosion on them and lo and behold it started working again (pressure/level readings). I just replaced it this weekend. It's a tight fit but you just have to break it free from the tube it sits on and then it just spins off by hand. Putting the new one on took longer as you have to tighten it onto the crush washers but, all in all,.. about 5 minutes through the hood. No lifting or anything.
Tip: Get a cheaper crows foot. They are thinner. None of my "higher Quality" stuff worked as the wrenches were too thick to fit in the space where the nut meets the tube it mounts to.
I did it by just reaching through the back. I put the crowsfoot wrench head on it then reached in with the driver and extension.. popped it in an it took maybe... 15-20 pounds of force?... if that much? It's an awkward position but I didn't have to lift or remove anything.
My sensor always show 4.5-5 under acceleration then it falls to around 4, or even not and at idel t around 2-3. Is this normal or do I need a new sensor, or something else is going on?
