Suggestion

However, if you didn't like the B&M and wanted to change back to the OEM shifter, would you really care if the B&M was unuseable, other than the fact that you couldn't sell it?

you would have to either be crazy, or have the install go terribly wrong to want the oem shifter ever after using the B&M.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I found this today, but know nothing about them. Is this a good price? And is it a DIY job, or do you need a professional? It would definitely be a great mod. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...spagenameZWD1V

POST 2Original post

You can get B&M SSK for $199 at BumperPlug. Why pay retail?

POST 3Original post

That seems high! Even for PORSCHE OEM. From what I have read, B&M makes a great SSK (same as Porsche OEM, I believe) and the best price I have found is from Bumperplugs (Site Sponsor) B&M Short Throw Shifter $199.00 http://bumperplugs.com/orderformpop1.html

POST 4Original post

You can do it yourself. Get on Renntech for DIY instruction. I did mine and many of my friend's cars.

POST 5Original post

Wow..my Schnell was purchased for $120 (from Vertex a Rennlist sponsor) and I have had no complaints. This is easily a DIY project.

POST 6Original post

I know, most of the guys like to pay high and brand name. They sleep better at night. I did some installs with SSK in the $100-140 range. No problem, no complaint.

POST 7Original post

If anyone wants the B&M and evo shift linkage (billet), I'll send them both your way for $230 shipped. Just PM me. Never got around to posting an FS ad.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The B+M looks like a pretty good deal. I wonder why the other is so high. More than twice the cost?! I might just have to do this. The B+M site has a great PDF of installation instructions, FYI. Scary ripping apart my car like that. Hopefully it goes back together the same way!

I bought the OEM when a dealer (Brandywine) was having a sale last year. List was $486.89. I paid $225.43. I am certain the dealer was not taking a loss. There is a lot of mark up there. Anyway, it seemed worth it to me at the time to spend the extra $25. In looking at it, it really does seems to be a B&M made part. There are two ways to install the shifter. The B&M way and the way Porsche suggests. The Porsche way is superior because you do not disconnect the cables and they cannot end up misadjusted, but unless you have help with someone who has done it the Porsche way before, you can end up having small parts fall into darkness and have to figure out how to get it back together. Personal experience here. It really is not very hard to do. Be aware that you cannot reverse it. If you dislike it, you have to buy new parts to go back to stock.

POST 10Original post

This was just covered Ad nauseam here: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/s...d.php?t=105685 In short: the part listed in the e-bay ad is the OEM SSK that comes pre-installed in to the shift box frame. There is no need to modify your existing shift box to fit the new lever (ala B&M). You simply remove the old shift box containing the old shift lever and replace it with the new part. There is no modifying (i.e. cutting out the old lever) and the car can be easily returned to stock by swapping back the original piece. With the B&M if you want to return to stock you must repurchase the stock shift box with lever installed for ~$150. With that said, the price listed for the OEM Porsche SSK in the auction is HIGH, call some of the dealers that have been mentioned on the forum for a better price. The part you are buying (not shown in ebay ad) is this: It includes the shift lever and the black plastic box that it sits in and attaches to the floor of the car. Install is easy, especially if you go the route with the lever already in stalled it the box, do it yourself. Andy

POST 11Original post

msweeney - Even if you get the B&M shifter, it is still an easy DIY install. Here arer the B&M instructions. I really is NOT as complicated as it seems, believe me! B&M Shifter Install Andy, would the OEM (stock) shifter fin into the B&M billet bushings (front and back)? If so, then this mod would be reversable even if you had cut the OEM plastic bushings.

POST 12Original post

I also got my B&M from Eric at Bumperplugs and did the install myself. No special tools needed and the instructions are right on the money. I think it took around an hour and that was going slow and taking my time. Immediately after installing it I thought the shift lever effort was significantly stiffer than stock which eventually loosened up to where it is really nice now. Now that it's broken in, I'd never go back to stock. You couldn't ask for a better vendor than Eric - great price, great communication, and really fast delivery. Tonger

POST 13Original post

i ordered my SSK and painted rear center console form Eric last week. Looking forward to putting it all in soon!

I don't know, I'd have to take a look at it again. As I recall after cutting out the old one it looked kind of hopeless to go back. It would also render your B&M useless as you would no longer have the "cups". I don't think B&M sells parts individually. andy

I agree that, if possible, reusing the B&M bushings for the stock shifter would make the B&M useless. However, if you didn't like the B&M and wanted to change back to the OEM shifter, would you really care if the B&M was unuseable, other than the fact that you couldn't sell it?

you would have to either be crazy, or have the install go terribly wrong to want the oem shifter ever after using the B&M. The OEM shifter is just junk....

POST 17Original post

Reselling the B&M would be my concern. The replacement shift assembly from Porsche (OEM long throw) is ~$175 so you could probably sell a used B&M to cover a new factory part. http://tinyurl.com/37hyxt <=== part

I agree. I love my B&M SSK. However, UCrazyKid and I were discussing if the bushings on the B&M would fit the OEM shifter IF someone wanted to revert to the stock shifter.
