Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace belt in 10 seconds' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair too' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've replaced catalysts on three vehicles over the years, none of them my Porsche.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok
had the marbles in coffee can rattle sound at idle for the last few days.
was worried SICK Ugh about all the IMS horror stories.
So I brought it into the dealer today - both catalytic converters are SHOT.
8 years emissions warranty expired Feb 11 2010 - they're going to call a regional rep to see if he'll do anything.
Had the serpentine belt, plugs, and oil changed while it's at the dealers...
We'll see....
I guess I'm a little surprised of all things the catalytic converters on these cars have such a high failure rate.
There hundreds of posts on RL alone...
Let's not start another Porsche hate-fest. The failure rate for all catalytic converters is 100%. They're consumable. The lifespan of a converter varies most widely with how a car is driven (they only work properly when they're hot, and can take half an hour to get to operating temps) and how the ECU is programmed to operate (e.g. a lot of cars will significantly retard timing and enrich mixture on regular fuel, which shortens the life of catalysts quite a bit). I've replaced catalysts on three vehicles over the years, none of them my Porsche. But even if there was a higher incidence - which I doubt - I'd bet it was traceable to the kind of lives these cars lead in North America rather than to a design flaw.
If you end up having to buy new cats try ordering a set from Oklahoma Foreign as last I checked you could get some good take-offs for less than $300.

I believe brand-new OEM cats from Porsche retail for $1000
but if you act now, we will double the price..... yes that's right DOUBLE the price...
You get the same parts as before at twice the price as before AND you get to pay for shipping and a small handling fee.
BUT we are not done yet, in this special limited forever more offer if you buy 2 we will charge you double TWICE!! This amazing deal wont last, ACT NOW!!
awe - the marble thing doesnt last long before the "KA- THUNK" thing... IF you get the marble sound again, ya might want to stop immediately and not turn the car back on until the marbles are diagnosed as not the IMS....
FWIW
I bought it from a Danbury Porsche in CT.
Servicing dealer is Herb Chambers Porsche in Boston MA....
But I think it helped I was doing other maintenance things I was paying for (plugs, oil, serpentine belt)
Car has 53K miles on the clock
Quick update:
changed poly V belt
changed plugs
changed oil
Total $700
Two new catalytic converters, brackets, Oxygen sensors: $4,619 GOOD WILLED PARTS by Porsche NA
Labor to install: $625
My indy changed the belt in 10 seconds. Make it 20 seconds as I stood and watched. Part is about $40
He charged me 2 hrs or $160 to change the plugs and rings. Most of that two hours was to remove and reinstall rear wheels and mufflers. Its an extra 6 bolts for the CATs to unconnect it from the headers and 2 clips for oxygen sensors. Sensors need to go into the new CATs.
I pay $80 for an oil change.
Yeah but my dealer gives me a free loaner Cayman S, got Porsche NA to goodwill some very expensive parts, and is 15 mins from my house....sometimes convenience is priceless :-)
Agreed! If I was in the same situation, I would have the dealer install the parts. While I could probably do it myself, there comes a point in time where a a few dollars saved can cost you in the long run.
I am sure your dealer went to bat for you with Porsche NA. So considering what you got from Porsche NA for FREE, I think the dealer should get a few $$$$ for their time, effort, and willingness to help.
I'm glad Porsche NA stepped up to the plate for you!
