I thought they outlawed highway robbery in the 18th century.....that shop is WAY out of line with those prices....not much you can do about it since you've already paid them....but I'd sure go back and let them know that you've checked with other Porsche owners and found that the going rate is $15-25 per tire....and that's balanced and mounted.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi...I have a winter setup I need mounted. I recently had tires mounted locally...and they wanted approx. 200 bucks when I picked them up. I flipped, and said it's unreasonable...gave them 150 and felt pretty bitter about it. Anyhow, another local shop mounted and balanced my 16's in the past for 20 per wheel. Is it that much more difficult to mount 18's? The same shop wants 55 per tire to mount and balance...does that sound reasonable? J

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 4758243

No, that doesn't sound reasonable to me at all. I think I paid $18/tire the last time I had this done, and that was with 20" tires for my other vehicle and I didn't even buy the tires at the place that did the work. Was it a place that might not have worked on a lot of Porsches and maybe just thought they could get away with it?

POST 3Original post

I've paid $15- $20 per wheel/tire. I'd be pis$ed too. You should be bitter.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

phew....thanks for the clarification. I knew it sounded like b.s....just wanted to make sure. J

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah....I know. I got stung. I just don't want to get stung again with the winter setup. Total garbage. Porsche tax the first time. However, the 55 was told to me over the phone without any mention of what they are going on. Both shops are playing. J

POST 8Original post

$25 per mounted and balanced. Your guys are thieves imho.

POST 9Original post

$55 a tire comes to half of what you need to buy another set of winter rims!

POST 10Original post

I paid about $100 for all four 6 months ago. Didn't feel so bad when I saw them use an actual torque wrench. Stefan

POST 11Original post

Actually....the guys at the America Tire shop I go to will mount and balance free if I buy the tires there. Since they've been giving me the same price as the Tire Rack (only difference is I pay Calif sales tax), I usually order my tires thru them. If you can develop some rapport with one of your local shops, you end up getting better treatment.

POST 12Original post

$15 to $20 to mount and balance each tire/wheel over here. But if they go on a Porsche.....there are extra fees...

POST 13Original post

Jon - that stinks! Did they at least give you a "reach around" while they had you bent over?

POST 14Original post

I just had my winter tires mounted and balanced on my C4, the cost was $80 total.

POST 15Original post

Did you ask what the cost was going to be in advance? If somebody told me to mount 4 tires would be $200+ I would hang up the phone (or walk out the door) and move on to the next business. If they did tell you that, then why in the world did you still do it?

POST 16Original post

Jeezus...that is ridiculous.. $20 per here at a local race shop. C.

POST 17Original post

Just had the winter wheels put on myself - $80 all around, and they used a torque wrench.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah....first time..I assumed it would be approx. 100...(and we all know what happens we when ASSume). when they hit me for 200 w/o tax...I said "that is the most unreasonable thing I've ever heard!!". Still paid way too much at 150. That's why I've been calling ahead....don't want to get into that again. Mavis here will do it for $24.99 per tire...good enough for me. J

POST 20Original post

$200 is about right if they included a nitorgen fill. Otherwise I would agree that it's way too much.

POST 21Original post

I'll tell you. Drive into a shop with a Porsche, and they smile, make it a Porsche race car, and they grin!!!

POST 22Original post

I paid 38 a tire for the latest hunter machines and road force balancing. Well worth the cash if they have the latest machines!!!!

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 4761464

A nitrogen fill shouldn't add more than $10 (if it costs ANYTHING at all) to the job, so I'll have to disagree with you.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 4762505

Years ago a great but somewhat socially clueless friend of ours moved into a new house. We threw him a big housewarming where everyone brought flamingos and those little sunflower windmills. His front yard was full. At some point during the evening he proclaimed that hed leave a few of the lawn ornaments in front but the rest of them were going in the garage. I'm pretty sure his neighbors weren't too happy that a year later a little flock of pink birds were still there. I thought I learned that night the importance of making jokes outlandish enough that even the slowest among us wouldnt inadvertently take them seriously. I guess I came up short again.

POST 25Original post

I would have told them to put my old tires back on and kindly tell them with all due respect to go eff themselves.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 4762588

Jim, I got your joke. Maybe I'm just saying that so I won't be included in the "slowest among us" group!

Did you expect anything less around here? Best advice in this thread. Hey, you in the short bus, too late to get on the full size bus. That bus has left the station

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 4762970

I missed the bus? Hell, I was looking for a train! Damn, I guess I am in the slow group!

POST 30Original post

That's ok Tim, don't worry. There's no hope for you

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 4763519

I know, I KNOW! That's the part I'm most concerned about!

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 4762588

In that case, yes, you "whooshed" me. I guess I've seen enough people actually spend money on nitrogen fills that I missed the joke.

POST 33Original post

Did they know that the wheels were for a porsche? Next time, don't tell them. Tell them it's for a civic...seriously.

POST 34Original post

I do it for free. I have a friend with a wheel shop who lets me do my own for free.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 4765784

Hey, bud, I have these 18 x 11's I need 295's put on for my Civic.... no, I mean my Prius.... yeah, that's the ticket!

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 4766058

Exactly...there is no "normal" car these tires will fit...and the dead giveaway is the 2 different sizes for fronts and rears. That's why I'm calling ahead. When I got the last set mounted....I drove the car in cuz the old tread needed to be removed. F those guys. And to top it all off...I think the fronts need to be rebalanced!!!!! Lil bit of a shimmy around 90...annoying. J

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 4766058

They wouldn't figure out it! Really!

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 4766088

Hey, look on the bright side... at least they didn't scratch them while mounting the tires.

POST 39Original post

I just got quoted $100 per wheel for mounting by Sullivan Tire. Called a smaller place and was quoted $25 per tire (Rim Pro).

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 4785025

So...... which place are you going to use??

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh brother....100 bucks....the nerve of some of these guys. That guy should be arrested for Grand Larceny. J

POST 42Original post

Why do I not believe that. Seriously, $400???????

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 4785197

And for doing his own television ads too.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 4785381

After I told him the size of the wheel and the rear tires over the phone, he asked what car it was for. Then he said, "they take a long time. You'll have to drop them off." They are a big chain around here. Just opened up a place a few miles from me. they suck Tim, I was thinking of doing the right side for $200, and the left side for $50, to see if the car turned better to the left.

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 4785410

Or you could do the front for $50 and the rears for $200 to see if the car would "kick ***."
