At this point we'll note that the light replaced the 108dB horn originally requested by marketing for this function.
until I pressed the brake pedal and actually called for the brake lights to be on, the warning light stayed illuminated as it had not yet had an opportunity to check the circuit.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 108db horn originally requested by marketing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'hood light (on the dash, right' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check circuit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Its exactly the same theory of warning that was used on the brake lights warning light on my 928 ....

I thought it was the hood light (on the dash, right under the speedo).

Shouldn't it check the circuit, then go out if all is well?

In any case, how does that light go off if indeed what it is doing is checking the spoiler position when my spoiler doesn't move?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not sure if this is a problem, or a feature? When I start the car, the idiot lights all go on, then off, except for the "spoiler open" light. It stays lit, until I put the car in gear and move forward.
Why is that?
It's a lamp check. They want you to know the lamp is working or not because if the spoiler cannot be raised at 75MPH the lamp will light to let you know you don't have the aero aid you might be expecting. This is in the manual, BTW.
I thought it was the hood light (on the dash, right under the speedo). Lights up when I start the car, warning me that something is open in the back - the hood, I thought?
Since the spoiler activation is triggered at a certain speed, they wait to shut off the light until the computer has seen a speed signal. Thus doesn't shut off until some car motion is detected.
Like I suspected, a "feature", not a problem!
Thanks for setting me straight! Being new to the 911 world, I still have a hard time calling the front hood a "trunk lid", and the rear trunk lid the "hood"!
My spoiler light illuminates only at initial startup along with all of the other warning lights. It does not stay illiminated after the initial "test" period, and and turns off with all of the other warning lights. I have never seen it illuminated as I begin to drive the car.
Maybe it stays illuminated until 3 - 5 MPH only on pre-facelift cars?
me=MY 00.
My manual says it is normal to stay on until driving. And my spoiler light still does this even after I got a fixed wing -> so it's a "feature" and not a "problem"

Silly guys, this is in fact Porsches constant marketing campaign to remind you that you should add a taco wing and an aero kit to your car at the local porsche dealer. They want you to think, "ugh thats a little wing" every time you start your car and that light illuminates.
Its exactly the same theory of warning that was used on the brake lights warning light on my 928 .... until I pressed the brake pedal and actually called for the brake lights to be on, the warning light stayed illuminated as it had not yet had an opportunity to check the circuit.
With the 996 spoiler, there is no computer stored memory of what position the spoiler should be in when a car is first started. So, as related elsewhere in this thread, the warning light stays on until the car reaches a predetermined forward speed; the computer can check to see if spoiler is in proper position (down); then the light can extinguish.
I have a 00 with Aero and Taco and the light stays on until I start moving. I thought the light was something caused by replacing the stock wing, not a 'feature'. In any case, how does that light go off if indeed what it is doing is checking the spoiler position when my spoiler doesn't move? Wouldn't it in the case of a fixed wing stay on cause it is not receiving a position signal back?
I'm happy it goes off though
The first time I gave my wife a ride in my P-Car(2000 C2) the first thing she said to me was not, "nice car!" or "I really like the car!" but rather "why is that emergency light on?" Of course the light she was referring to was the spoiler light which I had not noticed before. Typical buzz kill moment.
The light went off when I pulled out but being a new P-Car owner I did worry about it though.
However, all of her yelling to "SLOW DOWN!", etc., soon made me forget about the light.
LOL DreamCarrera, my wife said the exact same thing about the spoiler light and my airbag light when I had my DVD player installed. She looked at the lights and said, is that what forty grand buys you? I turned off traction control head around the next turn and stomped on it sideways. The last thing on her mind where the warning lights as she reached for the Oh **** grip, and I said, No thats whats 40 grand buys you! She never mentioned the lights again.
actually the mk1 aero check is very clever... when the car is parked, how does the dme knows that the spoiler is actually going to work. When the car moves, the dme senses speed and it sees (via limit switch) the spoiler posistion, the spoiler light shuts off.
The DME does not initially assume that it is properly working untill both criteria is met (spoiler position and speed).
Put it this way... would you want toknow if the spoiler is not working at low speed, Mk1 design
... or would you want to know that your spoiler is not working at high speed Mk2 design.
Personally, I would want to know I have a failure at low speed... If you have a fixed wing... get the LS wiring harness and drive on!
BTW the mk1 design is called "fails safe" in engineering term, its better to get alarms at safer limits.
OK, I wasn't going to mention this but now I have to do so. Actually, the "fail safe" indicator (a.k.a. idiot light) is there to detect a poser. If the driver raised the spoiler when he parked the car, the next time the car is driven, the car checks to verify the position of the spoiler. If the spoiler is retracted, the "fail safe" indicator is extinguished. However, if the spoiler is in the extended position, the "fail safe" indicator changes to read POSER and the speakers blast out POSER!.... POSER!... POSER!
hey all, new to the 911 world myself. Can anyone point me in the right direction to purchase new leather seat covers for my 99 996? The leather is in pretty bad shape and I would like to find some high quality replacement leather for them...saw some on ebay but not for my year.
thanks
Sorry but I thought you had something to add to this specific thread but you do not. Please start a new thread for anyone to respond correctly to your request
Can you say threadjack? Also, you really should try out the "Search" feature of this board, it is quite helpful. Remember to use broad search terms to increase your chances of finding what you need. For example, my 12 second search turned up this helpful link (okay, I didn't really read all of the thread, so I don't know how helpful it will be, but I think you get my point)

Welcome to the board!!!!
does my porsche have a spoiler??? I have never seen it!! must be in the back!! below the line of sight of my rearview mirrors! I am so glad that there is a light telling me that I got one 2!!
Chuck, you're the only on here that thinks I'm a ********.... er... let me rephrase that..... you're the only one here that actually tells me you think I'm a ********.... (yeah, that's probably more accurate)..... and I want you to know that I respect that!
Technically you have a wing, not a spoiler. Since you can't completely retract your wing, then no, I don't think you are a poser (or poseur if you prefer).
However, I am not sure that the phrase "pseudo-intellectual" really fits you. I would be more inclined to believe that the phrase "psycho-intellectual" is a better fit for you. As usual, I am just kidding, Chuck!
I know, I know, this is why you think I'm a ********!
Not cool.
You got a little hazing for posting a totally unrelated topic, it was minor and people were just having a little fun with the new guy. This is a great source of information and a great community that is willing to help with your questions. That comment toward someone with 900 times your number of posts is not going to make anyone jump to help you out in the future.
Brandon - you have 8 posts as of 11/9/07.
o In 6 of them you are asking for help. I helped you by giving you a lead to a good price on the expansion tank.
o In 1 post you gave us a hard time because we called you out for highjacking a thread, (which occurred in one of the 6 "help me" posts).
o Now in your 8th post you call me a ********. Well, you certainly are entitled to your opinion.
I agree with the statement that DOn (DFC) made in the previous post: "
That comment.... is not going to make anyone jump to help you out in the future
." I agree with him, NOT because the comment you made was direct at me but because I would feel the same way had it been directed at any one of us.
I guess you didn't realize you stepped onto a fairly close "Porsche Family." While we openly welcome "newbies," we don't take kindly to them bashing someone for no reason.
I think your comments may stem from the fact that you are totally devoid of internet forum etiquette. In other words, you are totally clueless on how to try to fit in when first joining a forum.
You never did introduce yourself to us, you didn't tell us about your Porsche, and you certainly didn't post any pics of your car. While none of that is "required," it is most certainly a much better way to introduce yourself than the method you used, which was to highjack a thread. (see the 1st of your posts which I quoted above).
I will make these suggestions to you which may help you fit in better than you have so far:
1. Step back and read a little to learn how this forum operates.
2. Start your own thread and introduce yourself to the group and post a couple of pics.
3. When you have an issue or problem, start your own thread and define the problem.
4. If you disagree with someone's viewpoint, argue your point vehemently if you must, but never, EVER resort to personal attacks. That will not fly around here.
5. Don't go calling anyone names, especially since you don't really know anyone here.
So I guess the ball is in your court. You can make an effort to fit in or you can choose to stay on the outside looking in. How well you fit in is totally up to you, Brandon.
Well Tim you clearly have a lot of spare time on your hands. Ok, conceeded I do apologize. Your comments were ******** comments but being new to the groups here, and clearly now a Porsche fanatic already ready to upgrade my 996 I will apologize and try not to missinterpret hazing for someone just being a smart ***.
Again, I apologize and I will be a contributing member of RENN.

People were just messin with you. The "thread hijack" thing is a common comment you'll find in any message board, so don't hold it against anyone.
We are glad to have you onboard. I would suggest becoming a full member so you can post pictures and have access to all areas of the site.
Brandon - I accept your pseudo-apology and your real apology.
Let's put this behind us and move on. I am sure many here would like to see pics of your 996, so come on "newbie" post the !@#$%^&* pics! (Usual "newbie" initiation!)
