The to-go cups or water bottles need to be babied when taking turns (use your other hand to hold the top) so they do not fall over, or take turns slowly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 00 996 that I considering purchasing the cupholders and moving the climate control down to the bottom storage bin. I'm wondering whether any other pieces are needed to make the bottom fit. If anyone has pics, could you post them so I can get an idea of how it would look. thanks

POST 2Original post

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. The cupholders (bought from a lister) came with two pieces that allow the holder to be fastened to the empty bin previously occupied by the climate control, as well as with a surround trim piece. The climate control head fits easily into the bottom. The set also came with a new surround, fitting the shape of the lower bin. The hardest part is threading the AC harnesses to the bottom. The whole thing takes about an hour. Here is a (not so good) picture. you get the idea. Stefan

POST 3Original post

I did the reverse of this recently and removed my cupholders. PM an offer if you are interested.

I might be interested in that... How strong are those cupholders? I usually have a fast-food cup, and they've always looked kinda flimsy to me.

POST 5Original post

I didn't write a DIY for it yet, but I took enough pics that should does the explaining. http://p-car.com/996/diy/cupholder/

pretty strong. they look the same as the cupholders on my old A4, but smaller. as my audi salesman said, "they're the most over engineered cupholders in the business." the one's on my 996 are big enough to hold a "tall" cup from starbucks.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 5402239

Jeez that looks like a lot of work! I would worry about having a drippy cup hovering over my radio and climate control system! But they do look cool.

POST 8Original post

They are pretty solid. My only complaint is that when the mechanism pops out, it is not very tall. I sometimes put my hand on the cup or water bottle when taking a turn. Stefan

POST 9Original post

There's a very nice looking cupholder that I would get if I had the Mk1 (those Mk1 holders are just like the Audi dash mounted unit, which drives me nuts) http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/

POST 10Original post

The oem cupholders seem to be made for cans really as they do better than to-go cups or water bottles. The to-go cups or water bottles need to be babied when taking turns (use your other hand to hold the top) so they do not fall over, or take turns slowly.

POST 11Original post

+1... I like that fact that they are removable

POST 12Original post

The cup holders are strong to hold pretty much anything, but the vibration of the suspension would pretty much spill anything. So for the morning starbucks I still hold the coffee in my hand.....

POST 13Original post

You know, after giving this some additional thought, the time I'd REALLY like the cupholders is on long Interstate drives, where I tend to drink a lot of Red Bull, usually the medium-sized cans. Those skinny cans won't rattle around too much, will they?

POST 14Original post

@Robin 993DX Thanks for those DIY pics. I want to move my stereo to the lower deck and wasn't sure how to get at the A/C controls for better access. Those pics will do the trick.

POST 15Original post

Here is what I did for my cup holders. I wanted something that would hold any size cup. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ight=cupholder It's been many years and they still work great! Kris

Ultimate cupholders are by far the best way to go; the condensation stay on the carpet instead of on your dash. Plus, the MkI OEM cupholders look absurd.

robin...when you moved the ac control to the lower position, how did you re-attach it?? are the attachment points the same in the top and lower locations?

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 5404894

The lower compartment is predrilled (at least it was on mine) for two screws. Stefan

POST 19Original post

+1 for the ultimates. And if something does spill due to vibrations, it's on the floorboard. But, I haven't had those issues with mine.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 5405282

If something spills out of my ultimate cupholders, I'm upside down...and that ain't a good thing.

POST 21Original post

I have 2 Ultimate cupholders from my E39 BMW. Anyone with a 996 one have a pic of the whole thing, so I can see the difference. I'll bet it's just the way the SS is bent. That would be great to reuse the ones I have by just rebending it!! I'm not crazy about the one in the 2002 & later for anything other than a soda can, and then, only if it's half empty!! TIA.

POST 22Original post

I don't have a picture of mine removed to show you, but from their site , it seems as though they are virtually identical except for the fact that the BMW tabs look bent backward a touch to accomodate the center console. On the 996, the tab is basically straight up.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 5405647

I'll bet it's the same or can be bent into the same, why not pull it out and see?
