Once the vice grips were on, I used a couple of wrenches underneath to grab ahold of and provide the leverage to pull the whole thing up and off the shaft.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Before, Ugh! OMG it hurts.... After, Aaaah. Better, closer photo easy switch out, took about 1.5 hours (Taking my time)

POST 2Original post

Sweet! Looks MUCH better. Are you going to use the old e-brake handle as a fireplace iron this winter?

POST 5Original post

200x better! I agree with Tim, use the old set this winter as firewood! yech.

POST 6Original post

Like night & day. Much nicer. What did you pay for the new setup, and where did you but them.

POST 7Original post

Looks great. I recently installed the Carbon shifter, and wow - that thing is very high quality and is nicer than I was expecting. Next on the list has to be the e-brake for sure.

POST 8Original post

How much for the parts?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got them from Suncoast Porsche $395 for each piece (just over $800 total) The hand brake is the whole assembly however. I would have paid more. I hated the wood.

POST 10Original post

Way nicer! However, I assume someone with a beige interior would like the wood accented shifter and e-brake handle. Wood just doesn't work with red exterior, or black interiors.

POST 11Original post

Is there anybody that makes replica shifters that don't cost and arm and a leg?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 4755446

I saw one that looks the same on ebay for $99...not sure if that was the opening price with a higher reserve though. PS--John - you have one clean interior! Your carpet looks brand new!

POST 13Original post

John - now you need some aluminum pedals (there is a Group Buy going on in the 993 Forum) and some Aluminum Gauge Rings. They will help break up the black a little and compliment the other Aluminum Look pieces in the car.

POST 14Original post

i'm a fan of the porsche oem cf - looks much better than the wood for sure

POST 15Original post

Stupid question: It looks to me like swapping the shift **** is a breeze. Is it?

POST 16Original post

What a transformation. Wood looks good in older english cars but doesn't compliment a newer 996. Nive work!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes the shift **** can be replaced in 5 min. jut pop up the base trim and remove the old one with an allen wrench. Then put the new one on the same way. In order to change the handbrake you need to remove the center console. still not that hard.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 4755749

When I took my old shift **** off, it didn't have an allen screw which held it in place, like the new one that I replaced it with. It just pops off, but requires quite a bit of effort to remove. Not that it was actually difficult, but it is kind of ackward. I ended up using vice grips to wrap around the base of it (not ON the base, but just below) for more area to grab ahold of before pulling it up. Once the vice grips were on, I used a couple of wrenches underneath to grab ahold of and provide the leverage to pull the whole thing up and off the shaft. Someone asked about a cheaper version of this shift ****, and I don't think there is a good alternative. This **** is very, very nice and high quality - from the leather stitching to the **** itself, and I would be careful wasting money on a **** that is cheaper.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 4756592

Thanks. Was actually thinking about the Porsche piece that Carnewal sells. It's a stubbier design, and would replace the more slender oe one that came on my '00. The latter, from what I understand, doesn't have the allen screw. But it is expensive, no doubt about it...

POST 22Original post

Looks much, much better, especially with the black interior. The wood really only works well with beige and brown interiors, IMHO.

POST 25Original post

Dark wood can work (as redridge pics show), but the red wood look over black is pretty awful.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 4755311

I hear you. I never understood the whole wood thing for anything but the pre-74 911s, and even then it isn't my favorite. IMO, your car looks much better now.
