Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
My 02 C4 with 37k miles acts the same sometimes....very easy clutch after running through the gears to redline.

Suggestion
If this were true, you would see the same effect revving the car in neutral, no difference as far as centripital forces on the debris as running through the gears.

no clue really how the clutch might have been used / abused by the two previous owners.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i know the C4S doesn't have engine hydraulic boost for the clutch like the turbo does...but...occasionally it gets a crazy over boosted feel to it. nearly always after a "spirited" jaunt (redline, hard/fast shifts, etc) is when it happens. then it goes away overnight or after being parked for a while.
the clutch suddenly just feels super light to depress, but other than that all works just fine, engagement point & strength takeup bite seems unchanged.
anybody have any ideas? anyone experience this?
i'd suspect the usual clutch maladies like air in clutch line, or bad master or slave, or even bad clutch...but...there's no slipping (it bites fine), no "engagement judder", all is well, quite driveable. but something is noticeably very different all of a sudden with the clutch feel.
it's intermittent so i know the dealer won't be able to experience it.
hate to take car to dealer because i already what they'll say - no matter what the problem really is - "well sir you need a new clutch, that'll be $5,000 please"
I had the same thing on my 02 C4S. I didn't think much of it until I took the car in for the 30K service. I asked the dealer about it and they said they would look into it. I was told that the clutch only had about 30% remaining and if I didn't change it immediately it could start to damage the flywheel. 2 grand later the new clutch doesn't get light after sprints. I would suggest making an appointment to have it looked at.
Take the boost spring off the pedal and drive it that way for awhile. You will get a much better feels for the clutch operation and eliminate the boost spring as the cause. Many of these boost springs have had to be replaced. Note: your pedal will be much harder to press without the spring, but you will be able to feel the entire range of movement in the clutch assembly.
I'm owner #3 and the car's at 42k miles now. i bot it as a CPO car from a dealer (McKenna in so cal) at the 25k mile mark. no clue really how the clutch might have been used / abused by the two previous owners. i suppose it could be, sadly, that i do need a new clutch already.
bummer to think that i went 155k on my original 944 clutch some yrs ago
This exact same thing just happened to me, anyone else have experience with the original poster's problem? You still around, captain Kirk?
'02 C4S 80k miles, don't know if it is the original clutch or not.
My 02 C4 with 37k miles acts the same sometimes....very easy clutch after running through the gears to redline. An indy said as the clutch wears over time you get clutch debris that can clog up the pressure plate, causing slightly harder clutch. When you really run through the gears, the debris can fly off the pressure plate resulting is an easier clutch...until the debris resettles ont he pressure plate.
When I had my RMS replaced at 21k miles, the dealer said my clutch was about 50% worn (I didn't replace it), so I may be looking at a new clutch in the next 12 months. My attitude it I'll wait until my indy says replace it or I get some additional signs of failure.
That is the most indiotic explaination I have ever heard.
Either your indy was just trying to get rid of you, or, if he was serious, you should shop for another one real soon.
I must admit, that does sound far fetched. If this were true, you would see the same effect revving the car in neutral, no difference as far as centripital forces on the debris as running through the gears.
there is also an uneven "jerkiness" as I move the clutch pedal up and down in neutral.
I can't see how the assist spring could suddenly make the clutch easier, either. That is its job in the first place. If malfunctioning, it could only make the effort harder.
I may not be heading in the right track...but on certain cars, the clutch fluid with overheat (similar to brake fluid overheating/boiling)....if it does, then you could experiment those sort of things you are describing.
I am not very familiar with how the clutch system works on our cars or even if they have a hydraulic sytem to them...but I would assume there has to be clutch fluid involved...it might be worth doing a flush and see if that helps...it would be considerably less expensive than other fixes.
