See jlturpin's post above, as he's my friend who decided to personally test my car's safety features for me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My friend rolled it yesterday. Top down, seatbelt on. Bars popped up. He walked away, was only hospitalized as a pre-caution. He left the hospital this morning.
He said everyone at the scene of the accident could not believe he was still standing there-- after a cabriolet rollover with top down !!
I am glad he is okay-- I will post up pictures of the car after I see it (I am 9 hour drive away, but I am driving up there tomorrow) He said it is pretty tweaked (obviously)
Damn hate to hear that but glad your friend is OK.
What is up with people letting there friends drive and having the car flip on them...this is the 2nd one in the past month I have read about.
Yep post pics when you have them.
Glad your friends ok.
Heard of this scenario many, many times and feel bad for everyone involved. It would come as a shock if it was something you never expected.
Glad he's okay, but this is the reason no-one drives my car but me. Sorry to hear you lost your car.
You let a friend loose with your car and you have to be ready for them to damage it when you hand over the keys.
Lol the 951 is good.
No hard feelings about anything. My friend is okay and that's all that matters. I won't go into other details about insurance until the claim has been satisfied.
What do you guys think the buy-back will be?? I would like to hear from someone that has been through this before. Car rolled twice, pretty twisted up- its a parts car now and that's it.
Unbelievable. Glad your friend's OK. Agree with Wayne - that's why no one drives my cars, unless I'm present. If he'd been hurt or worse, it might well be on your insurance, not to mention the lawsuits from family. As has been said before - "it's only sheetmetal" - you can always replace it.
Good to hear your friend is ok, especially with a cab. Even though the safety bars pop up, you still could have a object come through the top, and well, you know the rest. Lucky!
Glad ur bud is fine. I'm sure he's got one helluva story for you. I guess it really is just a piece of metal....but it was a really special piece of metal...HAVE FUN SHOPPING FOR A REPLACEMENT!!!

+1.. Glad your friends OK, sorry about the car. It is gratifying to hear those safety bars actually worked when needed, however... I've always kinda wondered about that..

I was involved in an accident while driving my buddies P/U truck a couple yrs ago. I was at fault and another vehicle was involved. His insurance picked up the entire tab because according to his agent, the insurance goes with the vehicle, not the driver. Fortunately his rates didn't increase because he wasn't personally involved - I just had to sign a statement saying I wouldn't drive one of his vehicles again.
I paid his deductable but my insurance never had to be involved or notified.
Glad your friends OK & GL car shopping.
I just had my 99 996 C2 totalled and insurance sold it back to me for $10K. They settled for $33K for the car itself and add-ons for DMV fees, insurance rebates etc that brought it up to just shy of $37K. I was very pleased with the speed, efficiency, and fairness of the company. I received my check in less than two weeks and have already bought a 996TT X50 to console myself for my tragic loss. Although my wife isn't particularly wild about how I've consoled myself.....I am ECSTATIC ....
Chuck, would you mind sharing what company this was with? If you don't want to post it, please pm me with it.
Congrats on the new purchase. I think I may stick to the 951 and ML for a while, even though a new range rover has been on the horizon !!
Ted,
I am glad your friend is OK, I know how he must feel. I guess that I am not the only friend who has wrecked a someone elses 996. I just hope you are as understanding with your friend as the owner of the car I wrecked.
Presumably, one only lends one's 996 to a close friend. Close friends sometimes disappoint; it's in the nature of friendship and is to be forgiven.
Cars you can replace; friends you can't.
glad your friend are ok, that's all it counts.
you can always get $$ back from ins. comp. and buying new cars. so cars don't matter.
ps
dare i say someone will jump on ANOTHER 996 project?
Yes he is very lucky.
I am afraid to go into detail on a public forum until after the insurance check is in hand, but I will say that it happened as he was merging onto a highway, coming off the onramp.
I am currently~ 5 hours away (currently driving- posting from blackberry). I will get some pictures of the car and share them with you guys when I ge back home. (They will be posted in off topic {along with some more details} so that they will not be able to be viewed by 'just anyone' on the internet.)
Thanks for all the comments and again I am not upset at all-- its just a car, and to be quite honest, not one that was even the least bit 'special' to me. In fact I would be more upset if it was my 951 !!
Seriously though, after the dust settles and financial obligations are satisfied all the way around, this will be a great 'bar-story'
Ted, What a great attitude!!!
I know how much I love my 996, but I agree with you 100%. I have let several of my close friends drive my car, and I always tell then to have fun. I keep hoping that they will eventually buy their own, so we can buddy-up for some spirited weekends in the mountains. I think at least one of my friends has his eye on a Cayman.
I know things can happen, especially on public roads, so I know there is a risk of an accident. But that is what insurance is for, the only inexcusable offense to me would be drunk driving.
Damn sorry to hear about that, Ted. This is crazy with the rash of P-cars getting wrecked lately. First my friend rolls mine at the track, then Chuck's catches fire and burns, then somebody else on the board spun their Cab down an embankment and totalled it, now your friend rolls yours. Geez!!!!
I guess the lesson to be learned is that perhaps we should glad that we keep our insurance up to date and are certain that we are willing to part with the car for good, if we decide to let a friend borrow it.
As for Dutchie's question, mine left the track at about 75 mph, never slowed down, smacked the tire wall, bounced off, spun again and began a barrel-roll which was arrested by a second impact with the tire wall. The movies couldn't have scripted mine any better. It was simultaneously cool looking and scary, once you realize the car is a gonner, you just start hoping your friend will make it through alive. I just happened to be standing in the series of corners where my friend decided hitting the tire wall a couple of times would be more fun than completing his current lap and watched all the carnage unfold in front of me. See jlturpin's post above, as he's my friend who decided to personally test my car's safety features for me. I hope your friend is as stand up a guy about fixing your car as Jonathan is about fixing mine. Cars CAN be replaced, but friends can't.
Another lesson to take away from this most recent rash of accidents in our P-cars is that the Germans certainly know how to build in the safety features and design the car to be safe in the event of an accident. Two Cab rollovers and and Coupe rollover in less than a month (one at high speed on a track) and EVERYBODY walked away without so much as a bruise. That is a phenomenal statement regarding the 996's safe design.
I just saw the car and I am shocked. My friend doesn't have so much as a scratch on him. He is just a little sore.
I will post the pics up when I get home (it will be tomorrow) and you guys will also be amazed.
Not sure about Insurance in the US, but in Canada it would be your insurance that pays and your premiums going up.... The saying goes: Loan your car, loan your insurance!
Wow... amazing that he came out w/o a scratch!
Ted, great to see how you react... true friendship is a lot more important than material posessions (even when it's a P car!). Great attitude! We need more people like you!!
you bring the meaning of friend to a completely new level! I would have killed him...for 1. ofcourse crashing my P and 2. for scaring the **** out of me and endangering his life that way!!
Oh and 3. for making me drive 9 hours, while I wanted to be beamed over in 30 secs.
I have friends, but won't let them drive my P......just because I don't think they respect the power! It is very difficult to roll a Porsche!!
