Anyone have any stealthy solutions for the sunroof buffeting that occurs while sunroof is completely retracted? I cant fathom the idea of adding a visible deflector.... And yes im aware that opening the windows solves the problem. It seems bizarre that Porsche didnt solve this minor issue before production.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Like you said, open a window or two slightly. It does suck, but I have had similar issues in other sunroof cars.
I find the booming stops if the sunroof isn't wide open. A couple of inches seems to do it. In fact, when I use the one-touch feature to open mine, it stops short of opening all the way. I never knew if this was something wrong with the sunroof, or a 'feature', but it seems to work anyway.

This is a feature designed to stop at the "quietest" position. RTM.

Uh... yeah. If I'd had a question, I might appreciate your advice to read my manual. But I didn't.

Bruce, I was just validating your findings. You are correct, the "RTM" should have been directed to the OP, not you.
Sorry. Wasn't having a very good day.
I've owned lots of cars with sunroofs (varies makes and models) and every one of them has made the "booming" sound at one speed or another. I always found speeding up or slowing down a little would help.
I drove a 2006 997S for a friend (to PPI) and I was so surprise to find a air (draught) deflactor that pops up when sunroof is open. Because on my 99(owned for 4 months), there isn't one and I have wondered why there was so much buffeting and noise when sunroof is opened. So I order a used one from DC Automotive. It's part #20 below. http://dcauto.gotdns.com/illustration/index/144191253 Not sure how mine went missing. Are you guys still getting buffeting even with this deflector functioning?... I hope I didn't spend $150 for nothing....
I dont think Im missing any sunroof parts and Im getting serious buffeting under 30mph.... I never use my sunroof except for the tilt position because of the buffeting.... you never really know when you need to drop down below 30mph.... and it gets to be really annoying.
When I first picked up my 99, the deflector didn't pop up by its self and yes the buffeting was kinda bad. A little bit of lubrication and it was fixed. The buffeting was drastically reduced with the deflector up. I rarely drive with the sunroof open and not the windows down. Rick 99 996C4 87 944S

I have a 2001. It has the deflector that pops up. Even with it, there are two issues. One is that very scary booming at higher speeds if the roof is in the second or more open position. It is not there with the roof open to the first position. What is interesting for Zmonsta, I am more annoyed with the lower speed high frequency noise from the popped up deflector. In fact, I have made a rubber shim from a doorstop to wedge it down. This removes the higher frequency noise from 30-50 mph.
Thanks Scott and all. I wonder if that's why the PO removed the deflector, I can't imagine it flying off.. I guess I will see if/how the lower speed high frequency noise bothers me... I guess that's just how they are.... Just an FYI, in the 997S, there were absolutely no booming or buffeting.. wonder what's improved, maybe air deflector is actually taller or etc..
