With a Mac, you can install Windows on it.

POST 4Original post

restart using the cd by having the cd in the drive and holding the 'c' key as you power up. Use disk utility to check the disk, and reinstall the OS if you have to.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Figured it out. Need 512MB of memory, only have 256MB Off to the Apple shop for an upgrade. Hopefully it can be done.

POST 7Original post

Sounds like you have an underpowered machine - you might not want to do this latest version. Honestly - you'll be disappointed if you try running the OS on the minimum amount of memory. I will not be putting it on any of my macs - it's too hungry for memory and CPU time. I'll probably buy a new 8 CPU machine after Macworld next year, so I think I can wait until then. After looking at the specs on this version I came to the conclusion that it's not worth putting OS 10.5 on anything older than an intel box. Sadly, all my machines are running on PowerPCs.

POST 8Original post

I recommend going with a minimum of at least 1 gig of ram. Newer software simply runs better with more ram. Also, if you have not done this - completely wiping the hard drive back to "0's" is always a good thing to do (on any computer). This wipes out old fragments and cleans up all the data on the Hard drives. PS - Mac user here since the very beginning. Currently running 2 monster G5 workstations. (1-intel quad core and 1 dual core) C.

POST 9Original post

adding more memory is always a good thing but in a pinch, you can pull power, battery for a laptop and ac for a desktop then re-plug and re-start.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 4720719

That has to be the worst advice I have seen given here outside of Mobil1 15W-50

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 4721217

Yup, gotta agree with that one. As for wiping the drive and starting over - gotta disagree with that one - there's really no need for that. An archive and install will work just fine on any machine that is working well. Saying "This wipes out old fragments and cleans up all the data on the Hard drives" is just as funny as "stretching carbon bonds" to increase fuel effeciency. No data is cleaned up, old data is erased and only if you do a secure erase - anything else and it's still sitting there the same as it was before you did the erase. Only PC users worry about fragments.

+1 It's cool, but you don't need it. Macs are great for forward and backward compatibility (usually). My office still has white eMacs in service, soldiering along for five years with nothing more than a RAM upgrade so they could run Tiger. Haven't found the file they couldn't open yet.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 4721277

Exactly. I have OS 10.4 running happily on a Yikes, a Quicksilver and two aluminum Powerbooks. All are running well and don't need the extra stress of an upgrade that will only slow them down. To be honest you can do without all of the eye candy, as it just slows down the machine without doing much. I quickly found that I switched off Expose and dashboard after I installed 10.4, as they do little but slow down the machine without adding critical (I could even argue useful) funactionality. A lot of the 10.5 upgrades are processor munching eye candy and many of the more useful features will not work on a machine that doesn't have the latest hardware. I can wait for 10.5 until I add another machine to my already crowded mac stable. BTW, who has the oldest (running) mac? The oldest one I still have in service is a 1995 Performa with the dual motherboard for mac and windows OS.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 4721292

Holy crap. You win. Closest I could come is a PowerBook from 1997, specs uncertain.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 4721301

You'd be surprised - they run forever and still are useful, so I'm guessing that a lot of mac fanatics still have old machines kicking around that that still use. I first started using macs in 1989, but sadly, I didn't own any of them, so didn't get to keep any of the machines that I used. I hadn't used a PC until my very first day of work at IBM - until then it had been UNIX boxes and macs all the way. To say that I'm not a Windows fan is a little bit of an understatement.

POST 17Original post

MAC's are for those who carry a dyno chart in their glove box for the "bling" effect and PC's are for those looking for actual performace. Regardless of which one you buy, if you don't know how to optimize it, it's just like everyone elses, just like your Porsche.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 4721376

How wrong you are. You seem stuck in the past when macs were weezing on Motorola chips and Intel was leading the pack. Now an equivalently equipped Dell can cost more than a Mac with virtually identical hardware. Windows machines are crippled by big company bureaucracy and lack of vision dating back to the decision that no one would ever need more than 640kb of memory. Apple detractors used to say how the GUI was unnecessary "bling" and the mouse was a passing fad. Windows has always lagged behind the Mac in adapting advanced capabiliites with the exception of networking, which has been long since remedied.

POST 19Original post

for doing work and getting things done i prefer windows vista

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 4721396

I stopped reading as soon as you starting referencing a DELL. Why would anyone by a premium computer when they are all filled with the same components? You can spend $3000+ for a name brand computer or $600 - $700 for the same computer without the label and have the exact same performance. BUT, then again, you have many on here that will pay $300+ for an oil change

PC's are Ferrari F430's...they're hella fast but a PITA to keep running ..especially if you have "non power users" in the house. Mac = porsche....u pay a bit more for accessories you want (read: 400$ carbon airbag strip ), but they just keep chugging along as great as the day they rolled off the factory. i used 2 build high end pc's for myself and friends all the time...now i only do it for friends who want a gaming rig or server, i just use em for word processing, music and por...i mean movies so a mac works just fine

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 4721253

Au contraire...Macs have a knack of fragmenting data on a regular basis. (Ask me how I know)...I have worked on many MAJOR projects and have had files become corrupted due to overworked machines that are not rebuilt on an annual basis. Setting the HD's to 0's may take a long time, but will help in bringing the machine back to its original smooth running base line. Believe what you want. After 20 years of running, repairing and working with these...Mac's are still the best for my field of work. FWIW - Yes, I am multi-platform. PC for AutoCAD and office crap...Mac's for graphics 3D rendering and overall design. Each to their own... C.

I started using Macs in 1984 (I feel like I am at an AA meeting). My oldest running is a PB3400c (never used). I've got a G4PB, MacBook Pro, G5 tower, G4 Tower...All of my "current" macs run a minimum of 2g RAM. I agree with Wellard (perhaps it is the Philly in me)...Archive and install is all I have ever had to do for an OS problem. I checked out MacFixit and it is amazing the fear instilled not to do the upgrade. Typical problems are with third party software that has yet to be updated to the new OS. I just ordered leopard, but I will wait until these are updated before install. On another note...The only time I have had problems on my MacBook is when I run windows...I have actually had windows crash on me...what a POS software program.

POST 26Original post

wross - I agree with the 3rd part bit 100%. A lot depends on what you are crunching. Massive amounts of files, data, large images...(over 40gig), really take a toll on the machines. C.

Sure, now the iMacs are wheezing on C2D notebook chips, and the 24" iMac I priced out last month was over $1500...and it was refurbished. They're great boxes but are more expensive playthings unless you're into graphics, etc. Oh, and it's only been out for a few days, but people already have Leopard running on PCs; seems like the best of both worlds--reasonably-priced software and a great, reasonably-priced OS. Why do they have to make it so difficult?

POST 28Original post

Always good to see such a strong Macintosh following. Mac now has almost 8.5% of the US PC market and is the 3rd largest manufacturer! My oldest running Mac is a 1992 PowerMac 5200 all-in-one. It is more of a nostalgic computer for me, as at the time I was with Apple doing PowerMac world-wide product marketing. This computer was very popular in the Education and Japanese markets. I currently have a Dual G5 as my primary machine, and 2 Intel macs, one as the media server and the other is a Macbook Pro which is also my Windows machine. I am on the edge about moving the G5 up to Leopard, but will move the 2 Intel machines up next week. I also will probably get a quad MacPro after Macworld in January. I got my first Mac in 1984, and have not looked back since! My son on his first Mac, 23 years ago!

Ok Mac guys, I have the half basketball I-Mac with the rotating/floating screen. It is a 1.0GHz/256MB memory using OS 10.2.7. Can I just install more memory and install leopard? Or do I have to get an older OS? Things that dont work: -Sometimes websites "buttons", if you will, are not recognized, HTML is all jumbled -I cant send messages or comments on MySpace, haha -External Hard Drive is not recognized But all my Windows Office works I will be the first to admit I dont know squat about computers, I will stick to cars and aircraft.

So you think the leopard really is going to "kill" my machine? Should I go with an older operating system?

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 4721839

You max out at 1GB RAM on these iMac models, and that's going to cost you $75-$80 from somewhere like OWC (cheaper than Apple and just as good) http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memor....0GHz-1.25GHz/ 1GB RAM will allow you to run Leopard, but it will be doing some caching on larger applications which will impact ultimate application speed. Eventually an upgrade would be in order - but when cash allows of course Initial reports from people that are running Leopard on older Mac systems suggest that it performs faster than Tiger for the general apps like Mail, Safari etc etc, worth bearing in mind. Can't see any processor upgrades for this generation of iMac, so no options there at this point. I just installed Leopard on my MBP and MacPro, very happy!

Never thought you were the troll type. I'll just say this: My company has been all Mac since it was founded in 1996. In that time, I've had zero hours lost to viruses/worms/trojan horses etc. My machines always outlast their amortization schedules. OSs and critical programs are usually forward and backward compatible so that I never have to retire machines because of software updates. With 30 workstations, I still can't fill an IT guy's day... I have to share one with two other companies. And the applications I use are far more demanding than the typical Microsoft Office cubicle dweller spends his days with. If you run a business, Mr. 1999Porsche911, that IS performance.

Not necessarily. Are you using Safari? It could just be Safari having compatibility issues with the sites that you're visiting. I keep a copy of Firefox on hand for moments like that. An example (with it being Sunday) is that Safari doens't play nice with the live update elements of nfl.com, so I get my live game updates via Firefox. As for those looking to install 10.5. I'm with Chad. 10.5 will be best on the post-PowerPC machines. I'm not convinced that oldler hardware will do so well with 10.5 and you may turn a machine that's working well into a machine that has issues.

I'll second that comment about some websites not being coded to allow the SUBMIT button to work with Safari - I too use Firefox in that case - although for 99.9999% of the time Safari is awesome!

Agreed. I think NFL.com is the only site I can think of that consistently has issues.

Well'ard - you could put one of those white Apple decals on your car, and no-one would notice! Or do you have one already...? Is that one on the side window..? Or maybe on the rear wing..? or is it on the hood..?

POST 67Original post

Quotes source post: 4723185

nah, the only decal on the car is a PCA emblem. I typically don't do anything like that on my cars - butt you right, it would probably blend in. -W

I have a first gen G5 (non-Intel) that has the fan noise problem. Wonder if installing Leopard will fix that issue??

POST 72Original post

Quotes source post: 4724680

Have you reset the SMU? SMU Reset related links: MAC G5 The problem with some internet sites...and buttons is the browser not the computer...upgrading it will not help. Try Firefox or Camino...

POST 73Original post

Yeah, I already reset the SMU. Did nothing. I can't even watch videos on my MAC because the fan noise drowns out the small speakers!

Update: Installed a 1.0GB RAM card along with the 256MB card, so now I have 1.25GB of RAM. Still have only 1.0 GHZ speed The good: -PDF files are thumbnails of the actual first page -Quick look of pics is nice -Front row - full screen movies, TV shows, music with their album covers, WAY cool -Finally have dashboard -Finally have photo booth -Pick up 2X more networks -All the apps that didnt work before do now The bad: -iPhoto does not work anymore, Apple knew this apparantly -The internet is either instant, or it is as slow as dial-up or just locks -My Internet Explorer does not work at the moment? Overall, I am happy minus the internet, hopefully there is a "fix".

POST 75Original post

You are using IE on a MAC??? I assume that is a typo since IE on the MAC is something like IE5 and MS discontinued service, etc., some time ago. Safari and Firefox are the only way to fly ps. what do you mean iPhoto doesn't work and Apple knows it??? I can't imagine that the new OS creates an inoperable iPhoto program which is one of the cornerstones of Front Row.

POST 76Original post

That does not sound good. How fast is general use? Are you on an Intel or PPC machine? As Dell said, IE was long ago discontinued on the mac. Safari and Firefox are the only way to go.

POST 77Original post

At 1GHz I assume he is running a PPC chip. Leopard is designed to run on the new Intel chips.

POST 78Original post

That's what I assumed also, so that's why I was curious as to how slow it was running. I wouldn't put it on any of my PPC machines.

POST 80Original post

to the OP: if it makes you feel anybetter. A friend of mine just bought a new laptop with Vista on it, and every time she closes the lid to sleep it during a break in lectures, when she opens it up 10 minutes later, WHAM: blue screen of death, memory dump, resetting.

POST 81Original post

A couple of observations. The speed of your machine can be compromised if the memory SIMMs are of different sizes or speeds. It is best to always install SIMMs in matched pairs. With memory as cheap as it is today, it is a no brainer. 2nd the idea of ditching IE for Safari or FireFox. While you are at it reset your internet cache, and clean out your cookies. You would be amazed at how that increases the speed of things. By your comment about iPhoto, I would also guess that you probably do not have a recent version of iLife. You need to have at least iLife 2006 to get your iPhoto working. I am going to do an update on my Intel machines next week, so I am looking forward to it.

I rarely use IE, just when my Safari in the past had "submit" button issues. I read that Apple knew that iPhoto would not work anymore once I searched the internet trying to figure why iPhoto would not open. Heard even some iLifes will not work anymore. Luckily I found my pics and stored them in a folder. Phew.

Everything is just as fast or faster except the internet sometimes. For instance, if I click on RL, the sponsors page opens instantly, a split second. Click on the "996" forum and the page takes probably 10 seconds to load.

My IT guy said just stick the card in and I would have 1.25GB of RAM. I wonder if this could be causing the slow load of internet pages? Hell, I will pop out the 256 and just use the 1.0 I rarely use IE, Safari rules. I heard some iLifes were not going to make the cut with Leopard either along with iPhoto.

POST 85Original post

the best thing about a MAC... you buy it with 3 yr warranty....you turn it on...do your work....NEVER turn it off unless you got to restart once in a while after updates etc....and the MAC will tell you to do so. When the MAC breaks down (and yes they do) you call MAC and they will help you or you bring the MAC back to the MAC store and they fix it. It is to bad that the MAC is soooo easy to work with, that you forget all the technical BS you needed to know to operate a PC. I updated to Leopard but suggest you wait for at least another month to do so....there are a couple of bugs and most of them will be gone with the next update...also most software designers (adobe etc) are working overtime to catch up..and that is going to take at least a month. Photoshop cs3 has hickups, so does lightroom.

FWIW, I just upgraded to Leopard on a 1.25 Ghz PowerPC MacMini over the weekend.. seems to run just fine. I initially had the blue screen of death after doing the install - turns out, there's a known problem with a 3rd party hack I was using called Application Enhancer.. had to boot in single user mode and remove the hack (my bad for not removing ti BEFORE doing the upgrade), reboot and everything was fine.. I'm using the old mini as a file-server/web-server for the house with a couple of external disks. Works fine - not the speediest web server in the world, but it works. The neat thing is with Leopard installed and the built-in VNC server (AKA "screen sharing") I can run it headless/keyboardless - just stick it in the utility closet hooked into the household LAN and VNC into it whenever I need to. - Nick
