My last event out at VIR where a high hp car is best used I ran with one Z06 (brand new one) that I was queue'd up behind and we ran for about 6 laps before he realized that I was having to SLOW DOWN to keep from hitting him.

Further I have run many a times with Z06's on the track driven by top notch drivers (probably better than myself) and there was no significant difference between the cars.

I have run with several Z06's and I can tell you that while they are smoking fast, it is the straights that they keep me in check.

I was at a light and heard a rumble in back of me, at the next light I was being harassed by a z06 corvette. I really had never seen one before only on you tube and stuff.
I dont even know where to start as it all was over in a flash. That thing is a complete animal, if he had more road i think it could have taken off. His first gear was ridicoulous, i shifted first and he must have hit 60 mph in first gear ! his second was devastating the noise was scary and that car really gives no mercy. After that i just saw his rear lights and i guess he must have flew off somewhere.
What a crazy car, god help the turbos and gt3.
Anyone ever had these type of situations happen ?
I have a 02 c4 and my brother... older brother... rides in a 07 z06 they are very fast .
I can't say as for the GT3 and turbos... z06 good bang for the buck
while it is not a "PORSCHE", the Z06's are indeed beasts! If GM/Chevrolet could ever get the interior to it did not look like the plastic was designed/engineered by the same team that did the Cavalier, well....
Too bad it's a 'vette and has all the baggage that comes along with the badge. I respect the car's raw power though. However, put two tight turns into the mix and the results of a race would be quite different. Porsche's aren't really built for drag racing after all.
Different cars for sure, but what a take off. i never seen a car jump off the line like that. it would be hard to imagine another car keeping up. The sound was crazy. I dont know about the curves how it does but for its price its something to think about if you like that power.
Will the 996 keep up with a normal stock vette? iam talking about a drag race with little or no curves. I get different results form websites about 0-60 and quarter mile times. Has anyone timed their car for these and if so what were the results?
thanks for the replies.
Errico...as the owner of a C6Z06, I can say that yes, they are absolutely monsters. They perform extremely well on the road course as well. Regardless of your experience, you will have the typical haters that will never admit that there is something out there that can outperform their cars and investment.
You will get the type of comments you are getting from jury_ca and deckman...comments pointed at stereotypes, and they don't realize that all it does, is emphasize the P owner stereotypical stuck up attitude towards anything that is not P.
My 911 is an absolutely great car but I also know it will not perform nearly as well on ANY aspect...but that is ok. That does not make me love my car any less...simply respect other cars more...something that some people need to learn around here...
And yes, the car will do extremely well around corners...MUCH better than a 996...

Not really the case on the track. Just on the street stoplight to stoplight like you found out. I have run with several Z06's and I can tell you that while they are smoking fast, it is the straights that they keep me in check.
My last event out at VIR where a high hp car is best used I ran with one Z06 (brand new one) that I was queue'd up behind and we ran for about 6 laps before he realized that I was having to SLOW DOWN to keep from hitting him. He'd pull on me on the straights but then the 3 places I just killed him were T1 (end of front straight), T14 (end of back straight), and the Uphill Esses. He would be 10 lengths pulled on me down the back and I would literally have to keep from getting back on the accelerator going down the roller coaster to let him stay in front as I was able to erase that 10 car lengths and then some just from braking and the marker in which I brake. Between my abilities (rather my car) to brake deeper and harder
and my ability to aproach up the esses you realize very quickly that the Z06 is a great car until you have to brake or turn L&R at high speed
Needless to say, he finally let me by and never again the rest of that weekend did I have to worry about getting a point-by.
Ok, I'll let you think that. Sure, maybe I was a better driver than that guy but I can tell you he was no slouch. Further I have run many a times with Z06's on the track driven by top notch drivers (probably better than myself) and there was no significant difference between the cars.
So my point about rebutting the ".....God help the turbos and GT3's" was spot on. We don't need any help. It just comes down to which car you prefer to drive........American or German. That's all, nothing more, nothing less. Don't read anymore into that.
Both are fantastic at the track and are fast as heck. You won't find either wiping up the other with perceived superiority.
Dude, he's in a GT3, not a C2. I don't doubt that what he's saying is true. If he was driving MY car (stock C4), he'd have been run over by the Z06. With the GT3, it's a pretty fair race, I'll bet.

It can be beat in a straight line without a turbo or GT2.
+1 Dell, your car has more than a few mods, you run on R-Comps, and are a PCA instructor.
The 996 GT3 is more than a match for a C5 ZO6. However (given equal drivers, tires, etc), the C6 ZO6 is more than a match for a 996 GT3 (IMHO).
Hell, I've passed more than one 996TT in my 986 but I don't in any way believe that I was driving the faster car.
And as such, we should show that as P owners, we have an open mind and do away with the stereotypes that surround P owners...would you not agree?
Mystro...sometimes I can be a little amusing...
I am a multi-weapon kind of man... C6z06, Techart 911C4 and E46M3...
You are only a few hours away...you should make the drive sometime for one of our weekly fun runs...
We have a small group of about a dozen cars or so (Vipers, P's, Z's, Lotuses....or Loti?., etc...)
Weapons...
As it comes from the factory, few cars are going to beat the Z06 straightline or around any track. Defininately not the TT, even with it's training wheels. The GT3 will come close, but, in the end, street rubber to street rubber, it will lag behind the Vette the majority of times.
However, a skilled driver can make anything happen on the track.
You can't compare modded cars since there are so many variables.
Guys
What I meant with god help the turbos is that on straight line or just a power push that vette is crazy, i have a c2 2001 stock and to see how he crushed me was less devasting that my cousin on a TT 2001 porsche. Gt3 on the track is different, driver , mods those are all variables that we cant compare.
Dont get me wrong, id rather drive the 911 most of the week, but to hammer 500 + horeses would be nice.
Tracking is not what i do , iam a guy that was stuck at a light with a zo6 and problaly will never forget that in 3 seconds we were 4 cars apart
I had an encounter with an m3 and that was close. vette z06 makes you just look bad on a drag race.
I think the Z06 (CC6) can do 75MPH in first gear? There is a video out there of a guy running through the gears and topping out at about 19XMPH. It did the top speed very quickly.
I would sport a C6 Z06 (yellow w/ wide lip wheels), it is a beautiful car that performs well. It is mad reliable too. Too bad the "cheapness" factor.
Well, while the Z is not Adriana Lima, I think it is pretty darn sexy. But again, very few things compare to the beauty of a 911 (with an aerokit, of course).
I don't have enough hair plugs or gold chains to drive a Vette.
I've never run w/one, but from what I've read the C6 Z06 is a beast and stomps any 996 ( TT and GT3 ).
Choosing a sports car only for straight line performance is like selecting a good book by thickness. The C6/ZO6 is a hell of a car, but honestly I'd rather drive a host of other cars that are "slower" in a straight line. For the same money, I'd take a Cayman S.
Street Racing?? You will not find many fans on Rennlist.
I wouldn't even contemplate lining up against a C5 Z06 let alone a C6 Z06 in my C4. It would be way too humbling. Heck, I can't even outrun my mate's Exige S for crying out loud. Even at the track I know I'll be giving it the point bys all day long. They're amazing cars for the price.
How quickly we forget that Porsche interiors sucked ***** right up until MY05. Take a look at a C5/C6 interior as compared to my 996's, or for a real good laugh, compare it to a 993. The Vette interior looks like a Lexus as compared to a 993's.
Must just be the difference strokes for different folks, but I think the 993 interior is the best looking, and best feeling in the world. I would take that any day over my 996 interior.
i've owned 3 corvettes...my latest was an 02 non-z06...and let me tell you that the only one i would own would be an C6 Z-06. my best friend had an 03 with 405 hp, some mods, intake, exhaust, cam, ECU flash etc...rode like garbage. as a daily driver you needed a kidney belt, was horrible resonence inside the car but yes had awesome power. the vettes handle ok in stock config but arent has user friendly as a P car in my opinion. never having tracked either but aggressively street driven both the non turbo P car to me is twice what a non z-06 vette is. i would put my 99 996 non turbo stock up against a stock C-5 on the track any day...drag stip the vette should win by 2-3 tenths...BUT take it to the twisty's and its game on...was never a fan of drag racing...im an x 600cc supersport road racer (CBR 600 F-4) and am all about draggin a knee !! im new to the P car thing, but lemme tell ya for the last 3 weeks she's been a daily driver for me to the tune of 100 miles a day...dont see owning another vette in my future unless its a 1967 !!
i dont know how c5z06 or c6z06 ride and i dont care much about the cheap int. but i have a lot of respect for them. yes, i blew by many z06's on track both c5 and c6. but when i was playing with my buddies c5z06, shod with hoosiers (i am on RA1), brembo and coil overs. hell, i have to work hard on straights and corners just not to get dropped. it is fast even in turns, you just got to find a good corvette driver.
It would be nice to own both the Vette and the Porsche but if you had to only choose one, which would it be?
For me, it has been Porsche. I've thought about Vettes off and on but the one thing that I coudn't get past would be having to go to a Chevy dealer for service while it's still on warranty. Having owned a few Chevys in my younger days, including a Z28, I could never go back.
Still, I think the Vette is a nice car.
I think it is simply a matter of perception. Good looking interiors form some people means having all sorts of controls and whistles...similar to the cabin of an airplane...the more the better. For me, it is quite the contrary...the more basic, the better. Out of all the vehicles I have owned (almost 70 cars in 17 years), I must say, the S2000 interior takes the cake. It is simply and to the point. There are some that claim the Z06 interior is crap...I disagree. It is simple and to the point...but, for my taste, it still has some uselss stuff. The 996 interior is ok for me, but I definitely would not get into a chest pushing match about it being better than ANY other car...
I think a lot of it has to depend on the relationship you have with each individual dealer. The local P dealer is the only dealer in a 100+ mile radius...and they are horrible...Chevy has about 6 dealerships in a 50 mile radius...and some suck...but 2 of them are unbelievable. They are extremely accomodating...have replaced my brake fluid, clutches, brakes, rotors and a few other issues on several Z's that I have owned...regardless of track days or mods...
That is HPT in Topeka...provided you are driving within your limits...you should not have to worry about it...oh, and keep your eyes on the track....you should not be looking at the walls otherwise you will end up there...
If you think this track has walls, you should definetely do not want to visit O'Reilly's motorsport in Ohio...that track has got some crazy walls and passages where you are going in between walls...about 5 feet away from you in each side...
Angel
I've never driven a Z06, but from what I've read it is a great track car - straights or turns.
The impression I get is that while it IS faster on a racetrack, the driver has to work harder to get that last 10%, while the Porsche(s) are more all-around user friendly when pushed. On the street, where road imperfections, bumps, gravel, uneven surfaces, etc is all around, the Porsche isn't as twitchy and is more predicatable and the driver feels more confident when really pushing it.
I think a lot of P-car owners don't want to acknowledge that an American car which costs much less can perform similar or better to their own car. I have no problem acknowledging it though, but I also know that my car fits like a glove and has incredible performance no matter what the category. I won't let another car's few tenths of a second here, or a few seconds per lap there, take anything away from my own car. It's still a blast and I don't mind if there's others out there that could outrun me.
I don't quite understand why we as 911 owners would get bent out of shape about a Z06 being on par if not quicker than our cars. Obviously we all could have bought a Z06 and had plenty left over for mods if we wanted, but we went with a 911, so why get upset? This isn't directed at anyone in particular.
Oh, and I quoted you because I agree 100% with what you said!
You've got a good point. I went up against a c6 that had a few mods done.
It was slow in every place around the track except for the back straight where it was keeping up to me. Well thats after slowing me down after a very hard corner and then giving it all it's got, I was still able to keep up but it did pull on me slightly until we had to brake for the next corner.
Next time we came up the back straight I didn't follow closely and got a good exit speed and passed him on the back straight without any effort.
Not to be argumentative...but,...would you mind explaining how you come up with the statement of "obviuosly" that we ALL could buy a $ 65,000 C6Z...and have plenty left over to modd it out if wanted...but you went with a $ 30,000 911 (assuming you are talking about your 99)...?
I still agree with you though...I have no idea why ANY P owner gets bent out of shape over other cars...just buy what you want....period.
I think many dream of the day Ford, GM, or Chrysler come up with a car that is just as good (I know I do). The C5 and C6 put up very impressive numbers on paper. They are wicked fast.
However, the devil is in the details and they fall way short on most subjective measures (they just miss out on overall "feel" IMHO).
The C6 is closer than they have ever come before. I hope they hit the C7 out of the park.
Exactly. Sure, I could have bought a C6 Z06 but I wanted a GT3 and bought it. I have well over 100K in the car yet at no time to I ever think of these cars in terms of numbers ($$$), rather, performance. The Z is very impressive and I have instructed several students with a Z06 but it lacks that "feeling" that you get from a 911, more specifically a GT3. I admire their cars and they mine when I take them out for a session in my car. Mutual admiration but no coveting thy neighbor's goods
I fuly agree. Once you start to think about cars in the terms of money, things will not be the same. Of course money will be an issue because we have to live within our means, but I think it gets to a point where you have to buy what ONE personally likes.
The "feel" I completely understand. I know exactly what you mean. My Techart C4...it is a 996 911...and the feel is simply put, the best. The Z does not have it. I saw a 997GT3 yesterday night...and, I got that "feel" just by looking at it...
Let me get this straight. You think I paid $30,000 for my 911, or are you telling me that's what it's worth now? It's pretty simple actually. Let's say you have $50,000 to spend today. Buy a C5 Z06 for $30,000. Then put $15,000 into it. Sorry if you thought I was specifically talking C6. My bad.
I don't know what you paid for YOUR car...I am going based on what 99' 996 C2's "seem" to be bringing today (based on average miles, shape and form), which is what you have on your sig. No idea why or when the C5 Z06 got brought onto the equation as the OP clearly stated he was talking about a C6Z...
Anyway, it really doesn't matter...
Well, I didn't buy my car today. I bought it four years ago. I brought up the C5 Z06, because it's one that could be bought by anyone who bought a 911, which was my original point. Anyway I agree, it doesn't really matter.
Having owned a 2006 c2s and now driving a c6 z06 (stock except tires/wheels) regulary at the track, maybe i'll chime in. if driven well, the z06 is a beast. no doubt that its significantly quicker than anything else i've encountered at the track (save for track prepped race cars). problem with the z06 is that something always tends to break. in the five track days i've done in the last 2 months, i've had several issues some which have resulted in the car being towed. 1) silicone piece inside the intake snorked had come loose and blocked the thottle body 2) steering pump had broken 3) deformation of intake snorkel due to high temperatures and vacuum
the above three failures led to the car being towed to the dealer and fixed under warantee. in addition to this, the z06 eats up brake pads like nothing else - now switched to aftermarket rotors and pads and it appears to be better. other issues include over heating the transmission resulting in a phantom gear between the 1 and 3 gear gate becoming available (car with engage gear and spin up in neutral. so all in, may the porsche is slower but i have never had a track breakdown in my 911. the vette is astoundingly quick but it always has some kinda issues preventing it being reliable. the 911 u could beat the crap out of it a day and be confident of going home in it, the z06, u can beat the daylights out of it and something will probably fail.
thx
Who needs a Z06. Just build one of these.....

Let me assure you, a track prepped C6Z06 is a very potent tool with an experienced driver on board. Corvettes are my primary competition in NASA Time Trials. I this first video I had just bought my 996TT and this was my first trip to Mid-Ohio in it. The vette in front is David Mullen who was driving this track before my dad met my mom. The thing about the vettes is that they run 295's in front and 335's in the back -- that's alot of stick. Add in 500 odd horse power and a good wheelman and you get a combination that is tough to combat. My TT was putting down 475HP at the wheels but David just eats me up. My best lap this time was a 1:37.6
April 22 2007 - 01996TT vs C6Z06
In this next video, I am going up against Jeff Moser in a race prepped C5 version. With more experience in the TT I turned a 1:35.3 this time -- but Jeff turned a 1:35.1
July 14 2007 - 01996TT vs C5Z06
Both these guys are a little bit older and very good drovers, but I don't suck either. I somehow managed to win the regional Time Trial Championship this year (mostly because the vette's broke) so this just goes to show you how really potent those monsters are in the right hands.
