In fact, Infiniti just paid out big bucks (via a recall) to replace the Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED taillamps on my FX--and every other MY03-06 FX on the road--for a "problem" that I nor any other FX owner that I've ever spoken to, has ever noticed.

Suggestion

You can replace the bulbs themselves for very little in comparison, but they will still not look as good as the full HID's.

Of course, I believe that most cars already use the highest wattage allowed by law, so increasing the wattage to use a blue bulb only means that you're making the whole system less efficient, not to mention illegal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

[COLOR="Blue"]I am hoping to upgrade my stock halogen headlights to Xenon/litronic headlights and seem to be lost. The dealer sells the headlights for $3600! I found a set from departstop.com for $1995. Then I found bulbs from gohid.com for $349 and a whole conversion kit from cqlight.ca for$165.99! This is all confusing. Can I just replace the bulbs in the stock headlight with these HID bulbs? Will the ballasts fit in the headlight housing? Has anyone done this upgrade? Any help is really appreciated.:

POST 2Original post

There is no way around a full HID conversion. You can replace the bulbs themselves for very little in comparison, but they will still not look as good as the full HID's. http://www.piaa.com/Bulbs/Bulbs.html

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your help. Is it a problem if the bulbs wattage is 60/55w? Will they get too hot and melt the housing, etc?

POST 4Original post

If you do the full upgrade, you get whole new housings. About $1300 in parts, IIRC. (As replacement parts, litronics are about $1200 each. I bought an upgrade kit last time I needed one.)

POST 5Original post

No. I've done it to every car I've had since the mid 90's. The PIAA ( Which I recommend ) SUPER PLASMA GT-X are the bluest of them all. They look great. Unfortunately for me with the 993 they do not offer the SUPER PLASMA's in the H1. I think that the 996 uses an H7 Check the site below. http://www.ltbmotorsports.com/piaalighting.html

...and getting a REAL Litronic kit is really the only way to go, for this mod. I would HIGHLY not recommend one attempt to achieve an HID/Xenon/Litronic look by placing blue-painted bulbs in their car, PIAA or otherwise. A proper HID setup consists of much more than just altering the color of the existing light output, which is what the blue bulbs do. Keep in mind that blue-painted bulbs filter all of the light spectrum except for the blue portion, which is why boosting the wattage is a common ploy to keep the light output comparable to what's legally required on a passenger car. An HID headlamp only looks blue because it's of a higher color temperature than a halogen bulb--IOW, it's simply a by-product of the system. Of course, I believe that most cars already use the highest wattage allowed by law, so increasing the wattage to use a blue bulb only means that you're making the whole system less efficient, not to mention illegal. Oh, and those cheap HID setups on eBay aren't much better--they are HID headlamps, but most have not been optimized for the headlamp reflector for each specific model of car. Thus, they tend to simply throw the light everywhere, which tends to blind other drivers, which is probably why you won't find a DOT sticker on any that I've ever seen. Here's an even better way to put it: if it made any sense to substitute inexpensive bulbs for the expensive HID systems put on cars these days, don't you think the auto manufacturers would have figured that out by now? In fact, Infiniti just paid out big bucks (via a recall) to replace the Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED taillamps on my FX--and every other MY03-06 FX on the road--for a "problem" that I nor any other FX owner that I've ever spoken to, has ever noticed. That's fine--I'll take their brand new headlight and taillight assemblies for a car that's been on the road for 80k miles already. I guess I just feel strongly about people mucking with their headlights so that they look "cool". </soapbox>
