Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was doing some searching on replacement for 996 timing belts but I don't seem to see any posts for this. What mileage or time interval did you guys change your timing belt? and what did it cost you? best to do water pump and thermostat at same time too - if you changed those at the same time too, what was the cost?

POST 2Original post

996 has timing chains, no time interval to change out.

POST 3Original post

Normal replacement interval for the polyrib belt is 60,000 miles - unless it is damaged (cracks or splitting). The polyrib belt runs the water pump, alternator, power steering, and AC.

POST 5Original post

Did the work myself so no labor and although I didn't replace the thermostat at the time, the waterpump and gasket were around $300 and the polyrib belt was like $45 or something. You'll also need to buy a gallon of coolant and a gallon of DI water. (This is if you are able to drain and conserve as much as possible for re-use, otherwise it will be more). A few other things to buy: Get a nice large drain pan as it will be a couple of gallons that come out. Get a 1/4" drive ratchet, a small u-joint attachment and a few small extensions for the waterpump bolts. A nice long-necked funnel. A six pack of beer.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like since a timing chain is used it doesn haven't to be replaced (no wonder I couldn't find info on it :P ). The cost on the polyrib belt, water pump etc. is pretty reasonable. I can't see labour being that much since it's not the amount of work to do a timing belt.
