Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They had hardley any grease and when removing the boots found water coming out out of them so I cleaned repacked and reinstalled.
Leading evidence: 'Clean repacked and reinstalled' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'on one side or the other' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check brake shoes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced the pads not the shoes just cleaned and reinstalled the hubs.

Ran through 2-3 gears and no noise so far, but it is still on jacks.

[QUOTE=Tippy;4699110]The sound is the fact you used shoes instead of pads.

That will load up the CV joints and the suspension on one side at a time and help you pinpoint if the problem is on one side or the other.

Suggestion
Here's a diagnosis tip for the next time you have a noise coming from the driveline: drive along listening to the noise and then see if the volume or tone changes when you veer from left to right (back and forth).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The clicking still occured when I gently pulled the emergency brake while driving and still no change.
I have a clicking noise at rear wheels seems like both sides. Cannot put my finger on the sound. Brakes, Tranny etc everything seems tight underneath car. Have a listen.

Wierd! DO you have hollow spoke wheels? Maybe sonmething loose inside? Have you tried putting the rear up on jacks and running it? Might be easier to diagnose that way.
Almost tried to run on jacks but got cold feet, everything seems tight underneath lugs are tight, transmission bolts tight. I did redo the brake shoes, but I did not know if it made the noise prior because I did not drive it first.
The sound is the fact you used shoes instead of pads.
That is a weird one, I am with Tim on this one. I would put it on jack stands and idle it in like 3rd or 4th gear and look around the rear end, of course someone in the car in case the car were to fall off the stands.
I replaced the pads not the shoes just cleaned and reinstalled the hubs. They are alittle hard to turn but was chocking that up to new pads. The clicking still occured when I gently pulled the emergency brake while driving and still no change.
I hope so, but would think that would cause a squeel noise if it was not, but you never know. It does bring to mind when I jacked up the car and tried to rotate right tire that it would not and felt like it was caught on something. Well I gave it some forward and backward motion and it snapped loose and seemed to spin hard but freely after that. Think I need to take the tire off again.
Ok wheels off and up on stands at idle first gear. But still cannot isolate, not sure if it starts in tranny and works to wheel through shaft or maybe CV joints which I know nothing about. It does not seem like pads they are not grabbing and there is not any clicking vibration when I touch the calipers. The noise is more pronounced in passenger wheel. ??

odd. Try the screwdriver trick, use it to touch various parts (not moving) and put the other end to your ear. Rate the loudness 1-5 to try and isolate where the sound is coming from. Be careful!!
Well it's not the tranny, but the CV Joints inner and outer both sides. They had hardley any grease and when removing the boots found water coming out out of them so I cleaned repacked and reinstalled. Ran through 2-3 gears and no noise so far, but it is still on jacks. The bad thng is it took all day and man was it messy and when I finished I forget to get hand cleaner. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
Real nice diagnosis...but wait... how old is this car? how many miles? are the CV boots cracked? Leaking but you would have easily spotted grease everywhere... water in all the CV joints? WTF... it sounds like it left the factory without or with minimal grease... Hope this is not a QA problem...
George
I am soooo tired right now
I'll put the tires on tomorrow and maybe take it for a spin down the street then it's off to the dyno if it checks out.
I need to find out from vivid racing how they take there A/F readings etc.
This is a project car and was parcially submerged in the rear so water is understandable but the lack of grease it did have some but not enough by my standards. The car has 33,000 miles and the boots where fine and no grease splatters but then it is german and last time I was their I never saw so many people in casts... could be the beer mixed with grease/beer or some derivitive in their also
Forgot to mention george it is a 2000 carrera with manual trans and if I was doing maintenance it would be easy check to pull the boots back and inspect and repack if nessecary for piece of mind.
Here's a diagnosis tip for the next time you have a noise coming from the driveline: drive along listening to the noise and then see if the volume or tone changes when you veer from left to right (back and forth). That will load up the CV joints and the suspension on one side at a time and help you pinpoint if the problem is on one side or the other. If your problem was poorly lubricated CV joints your weird noise would have been more pronounced turning one way over the other (unless you had the problem on both sides, in which case it would have been more pronounced at the apex of each back-and-forth turn).
