Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

I think the power loss is probably not noticeable, but the long term effects of running your engine a little richer than it needs to be are not good or cheap.

You can still run less, but the ECU will retard the ignition to prevent knock.

Run regular, and it will retard and enrich to prevent knock, effectively powering the engine down very slightly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sports Fans While I am totally understanding that the 996 has an Engine Knock Sensor, I am not able to feed my baby the 93 that she needs according to the manual. I live in Hee Haa Hell and they sell nothing higher that 91. Here is my question...should I dig my own oil well, use an octane booster...or forget about it and enjoy the ride?

POST 3Original post

Since it's highly doubtful that you would be able to detect a peformance differance in street driving, I also vote for enjoying your ride.

POST 4Original post

Have another look at the manual, and then at the pump. I'm pretty sure the manual specifies 93 RON, but premium fuel isn't rated that way in North America. The octane ratings you see on the pump are an average of two rating systems, RON and I thnk it's called Motor Octane (MON), which gives you a third value called Road Octane. Anyway, point is, your pump 91 is probably as good as equal to the 93 specified in the manual. Remember, octane isn't a substance, it's a property. Run premium in your car, and the engine will give you the default mapping for mixture and timing. Run regular, and it will retard and enrich to prevent knock, effectively powering the engine down very slightly. I think the power loss is probably not noticeable, but the long term effects of running your engine a little richer than it needs to be are not good or cheap. Shortened catalytic converter life is one example.

POST 5Original post

RON=research octane number...MON=motor octane number...PON=pump octane number (R+M)/2 Mine says MIN 93 (R+M)/2 right on the gas door. You can still run less, but the ECU will retard the ignition to prevent knock.

POST 7Original post

Very approximately, the US pump octane is about 5-6 points lower than the equivalent RON number used in Europe, so 93 PON ~= 98 RON. Meanwhile, the yucky 91 sold here in California has an octane roughly equivalent to a Chardonnay spritzer
