Then share with her your ah ha moment/change of direction that instead of buying 1 car and spending all the money, that it would make much more sense get 2 cars for the same $ so that you have 2 toys, and if one is broken the other is fixed and the older car is a classic and fully depreciated, etc, etc, etc.

i got the permission of buying another p-car.
the problem is i want to buy 2
i want to spend $15K for a 2.5 boxster and 10K on 911 SC.
haven't talked yet, but do u think i have a chance?
i mean, the total is $25K, less than a zoom/zoom u got those days.
Two cars would cost more to insure...right? Bold of you buying 2 used cars at the same time - knowing there is always something to fix when you buy a used car!
insurence wise, i want to get some "classic car policy" for the SC, so the extra will be ~500/year. i think i am fine with that. yes, there's alwasy something to fix. but hopefully in diff. car at diff. time so that i always have one car to drive around.
It's better to beg for forgiveness than beg for permission? not always.....
My tactic is make sure you buy her a nice handbag or shoes, a nice romantic dinner and then during the dinner just slip it in (I'm buying "cough" two cars "cough") after a few cocktails. When you buy it, just remind her of the short and I mean short discussion you had over dinner.
You really have to quickly layout the benefit statements to her. I like to think, what is the first and second sentences that you will be confronted with. i.e. "cost" and "why do you need two Porsches?"
• Sounds like you have the cost issue layed out - don't bring up insurance, maint. etc...just clouds your objective. ;-) - BOGO, I'm buying one and getting one free for the 25g.
• Boxster for those beautiful summer drives with the lovely misses, maybe out to dinner etc...SC for track or whatever your plans...
May the force be with you!
easy...
1st sell her on the 25k #, that is absolutely key
Then share some of the 25K cars you are thinking of
Then share with her your ah ha moment/change of direction that instead of buying 1 car and spending all the money, that it would make much more sense get 2 cars for the same $ so that you have 2 toys, and if one is broken the other is fixed and the older car is a classic and fully depreciated, etc, etc, etc.
I have followed one rule with my wife, buy first, explain later. Go for the 2 P-car purchase and before you know it all will be forgiven.I started with Husky dirt bikes, then a Saab SPG, Audi A4, Audi TT, 911SC,several boats(sail and power), and the latest was my current 996 911. We're still together after 31 years.
I agree with this, but would go one step further...
Sell her on the $25K -- then tell her the cars, with the options you're looking at, are actually more like $30k. Once she agrees to the price increase, have the "ah ha" moments and explain how two separate cars would really suit your needs better -- and, oh by the way, they can be purchased for the original $25k!
This is very similar to what I did... Although it was unintentional. I was contemplating replacing my MB E320 with a 993 C4S. After lots of discussion, my wife agreed to it - although the biggest reservation was she would have no "backup family vehicle" once the Mercedes was gone. After looking at several 993s, and then driving a 996, I liked the 996 better!
The solution was, get a 996 AND a VW eurovan - for the same money I was prepared to spend on a 993! Now everyone's happy!
Kudos to you if you can even "pitch" it in such a way that getting TWO cars is HER idea! Then you're super golden!
Personally, I'd be unable to get forgivness for purchasing a car without approval of "she who must be obeyed" ... a few hundred bucks is the limit.
ok
forget about the wife part, do u guys think it makes sense? would u do it?
i will run out of garage space for sure. 996 will stay inside, 986 too, the SC outside with the van.
I'd sit her down and patiently explain how happy it would make me, that the only real additional cost would be the insurance, and maintenance. But since I'd have two more instead of just one they would last longer than mormal, and I could own them for a really long time before needing to buy anything else!
Then I'd chain her back to the stove and go buy the friggin things.
Buy HER something...a nice handbag was mentioned and that goes far...like a Coach or something. Nice perfume. I mean, what's that? $400?? In my case, that would go a long, long way.
3 years of marriage and I just tried that.
I bought a SLR camera for $1200.
What happen you ask???
First night she cried and cried (real tears) all night. Because she says we shouldn't keep secrets.
Week later I was buying her a new Elliptical trainer for $2800
I WILL EVER TRY THIS AGAIN
I would use a spreadsheet and see if the numbers work. If they don't do what all new business do and make numbers up
If you are blessed to affored it then buy now discuss later. When I bought my second pcar I told her a friend of mine was having financial trouble and we are in an ok position to help him so I bought the car and told her remember we spoke about helping my friend out? she said yeah and I said well we just did and showed her the keys to the 2nd pcar.lol. She complained for a bit but then got over it when I told her how beautiful she looks in the car .lol
Yeah, I think my SO is too smart to fall for the original poster's plan. That's mostly because if one could spend $10k and get anything approaching a reliable 911, I'd have done it ten years earlier.
Also, I chuckle at thought of handing my SO a new purse as they're unloading the second of my new Porsches in the driveway. She'd quickly chuck that purse aside and ask what the hell I was thinking...and she'd be right, unless I'm misreading the original poster and he's actually independently wealthy. Of course, I suspect this thread wouldn't exist were that the case.
<cue posters whining that "$10k will buy a GREAT P-car!">
Just tell the car you were going to get was actually 40K, so given the limits she imposed (25K) you thought it was better to get 2 cheapies and stay in the good graces, rather than go over and get the wrath.
Besides, she's not going to be fooled by any of this. The trick is, making it easier for her to let it slide. Grease the works and get her something nice when you break the "news"
-td
Had dinner with the wife and was telling her about the problem PL could have on his hand
I stated the facts as if I were wanting to do a 2 car deal. To see how she would respond
Her response
maybe you should of tried telling her you where gonna buy one for 25k and then when you went they had a deal you couldnt let go by. then show up with both and ask her if she ready to go shopping.lol
tell your wife you are very unhappy.....and that you don't feel like a man that you feel you have been working hard and have nothing to really personally show for..... you need to buy a sports car or 2 (greedy!!)...you have given her all she needed and wanted and didn't really need!...and now it is your turn....this is how I bought my Porsche, my 62inc HD TV, my surround, my fat breitling, my porsche design keychain, my 3 iphones okay I gave her one and if my kid does well in school (which he doesn't) he gets one as well.
Damn this worked really well!! Because I didn't even mention everything yet!!
My wife says somewhat the same thing. "WHY.........OKAY..........if we can afford it, buy it."
I have always been upfront with my wife on any large purchase. In selling her a 2 car purchase would be:
-"The 911 SC is for AX, it would make US better drivers without all the modern gizmos of antilock, traction control to cover up our mistakes."
-"The Boxster is for the track. The modern suspension and safety devices are needed at higher speeds. Plus the new skillset learned from the SC transfers over to the boxster and we will run much faster."
-Finally. "Remember how Jill said you were slow..." This is to setup for additional 25k for future modifications...
As my wife is sitting in the tv room watching Jerry McGuire movie, so there is the proper time for you to introduce your idea and this would not be one of them, however if you have no time for the proper setup of a "sting operation" it will be tough. For me it is all about looking responsibile and unselfish first. I bought her a car first then it was easy for me, simply a matter of checks and balances. Good Luck.
I probably shouldn't reply to this as I can't give you a cool, hip, "guy" response. But decisions like this set standards of behavior in relationships and come back to haunt you--especially if she thinks it is something that you did
to
her rather than
with
her.
While timing is important for any discussion, consider what do you want your relationship founded on? Either of you should be allowed or encouraged to do things if they make sense. Do you want your relationship founded on openness/honesty/tolerance or trying to trick each other? I can think of a variety of scenarios where (I would bet) you would prefer that she doesn't do things, planning just to apologize later if you find out. Within a decsion where you get what you want, how are you looking out for what's good for her? Knowing the answer to that question may create the conversation & the outcome you want. Don't get permission. You don't want a parent/child relationship. Just respect each other and create agreement on decisions that affect both of you. It's neither hard nor complicated.
(I've managed to do it every wrong way possible over the years and have the divorce papers to prove it.)
Well said. For all the people that are clamoring for ideas of how to "trick" the wife into "letting" you get two Porsches (with a shiny new purse!?!), that will just come back to bite you in the rear. It'll make her bitter towards the cars and they'll just remind her of how you went behind her back. Seriously, this is like "Junior-High Relationships 101"--these ideas will never work.
And I'll say it again: buying TWO P-cars for $25k only ensures that you'll be "investing" a lot more money into them in the future, and that will only serve to make her more upset about the cars. IMO, the minimum budget to buy two Porsches would be about $40k, unless you enjoy being nickel-and-dimed for as long as you own the cars.
she tricked me into having kids...telling me how wonderful they are and that they would enrich my life....well none of that. but you are right honesty in a relationship will make it last...and keeping your you-know-what in your pants is pretty helpful as well....finances and cheating are the 2 biggest divorse reasons in the world!
Buy the boxster for the wife, the SC for yourself, and keep her family car as a spare - no problem (especially if she can't drive a stick shift)
When the SC needs work on it, buy another Boxster for yourself, and spend 2 years "fixing" the SC until it is perfect for track days.
Enjoy.
I would only do it if the SC gets a garage spot. Otherwise you will be wasting your money, regardless of the wife by letting this car sit outside, exposed to the elements.
update:
had a conv. with wife last night.
she indicated that no more toys.
she wants a normal sedan. so if the van is out, she can use the sedan. i think my plan-b is audi A4.
but i really can't warm up to it.
now what to do?
plus, i told my wife i got some 18" carreraIII wheels for $200 with winter and summer tires.
i don't think she buys the story, but we do need new tires, and nice wheels can't hurt too.
i think now i need to stick to the story that 2.5 boxster is the best money, cheap, fun, easy to main.(yeal, they only swap engine, no hands dirty rebuild
), won't lose $$ compare to A4.
