Tooloud: I do a lot of eBay'ing myself....bought both of my P cars off eBay...and I'm one of those hated folks who use a snipe program.....so Mark's auction didn't go far enough to determine if any snipe bids might have entered the picture.....but I agree with you about a salvage title and not knowing the seller.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just removed the reserve price on my purple Porsche. I guess I'm really selling it. I fear it's going to be painful watching it go.
I need to sell it to fund my other project cars. I think the blue 996 will make a better track car (PSS9s, 6 spd, LSD), which is what I really wanted. The only problem is....the purple car doesn't have a scratch or rock chip on it, the blue one does. Maybe an aero kit will cover up some of those rock chips
I'm feeling better already.

Geez Mark....you're taking a bit of a chance....the market is a bit soft these days and it's a buyer's opportunity for some great deals these days. I sincerely hope you do well with the no reserve....best of luck to you buddy.
I'm waiting to see the next Barrett Jackson auction....with the market the way it is, I'll bet there'll be some hellatius deals to be had there....
Thanks Chuck, it's kind of scary...I can't stand watching your old car languish in my garage. It needs an infusion of cash. Barrett Jackson is always fun, better than the Superbowl.
Mark, that is a big risk, I sell and buy on ebay but I wouldn't do what you have done for such a high ticket item.
I know it is a salvage so that does impact it a bit. But I sure hope it gets more than the current bid and you have less than 48 hours to go now. The high bidder I have seen bid on many cars on ebay before, seems he is always looking out for a steal.
So GL with the sale.
Gotta agree - you can hope for last minute bidding to push up the price, but I'm not sure that I'd like to be in a position to have sell if it didn't hit what I wanted.
I'm guessing that by removing the reserve you must be comfortable in letting the car go if the price doens't go any higher, but I'm not sure I could do what you're doing. Good luck! Someone is going to get a great deal if you don't pull the auction before the end.
I'd hate to see this car go for less than $25K
Thanks for the words of wisdom guys. After a lot of soul searching, I pulled the listing on my Vesuvio 996, about 1 day and 17 hours before making a big mistake. I can't bear to part with it. Wifey drove it to work today...I hope she enjoyed it because we are going to remain a 2 Porsche family.
Mark: I'm very glad to see you pulled the car from eBay. The current market is too damn soft. I was thinking about selling my 930 slant....but after looking at what I see going on, or maybe more accurately....what I see NOT going on....I was truly afraid that you were going to get shafted on the sale price of your car. You saw how it did last time through when you had a reserve on it...and there's no reason to think things would be any different unless you ended up with a couple of guys with zero bid history bidding against each other.
I guess it's because I know you personally, I've driven the car, and I know what went into it; and how you are with your maintenance and upkeep....that I was really afraid that you'd end up giving it away then kick yourself in the *** for letting it go so cheaply. I would highly recommend that you hang onto it for a bit and wait for this buyer's market to pass. That's why I'm so intersted in Barrett Jackson....I really want to see what the economy is going to do to the auction. Of course they're on a higher scale and draw crowds because of the pristine stuff they put up.....but it's still going to be an indicator.
Glad you kept it buddy. Now get to work and rejuvinate my old Iris Blue baby.
Awesome Mark. This is what I plan to do with my 99 tip when it is paid off, namely, keep it as the daily driver/wife's car and get something fun for the weekend stuff (gt3, turbo...heck, maybe even a supercharged 99!). Keep us posted on the progess of the Iris beauty! Scott.
Good move Mark, I think that you would have really been dissappointed afterwards had it sold so cheaply for such a nice car. Best of luck, and happy to hear the car will be staying with its proper owner for at least a while longer!
Thanks guys. My wife did enjoy driving it today. I told her how good she looked in it as I was detailing her SL.....I don't think I'll have to sleep with the dog tonight.
No offense to Mark or his car, but the salvage title is probably what's killing the price the most, with the Tiptronic a close second. I think people are much more willing to take a chance with a salvage title on a $10k Civic than on a Porsche.
Personally, having owned a salvaged vehicle, there's no way I'd take the chance on buying one from somebody I didn't know. Having "access" to Mark here at Rennlist is a huge plus, but it doesn't mean much to the average eBayer looking for a deal on their first Porsche.
I see another early 996 (like Mark's) with Tiptronic and 96k miles (but a clean title) sold for $21,555. The other MY99s generally sold for upper $20ks and low-mid $30ks, which isn't far off from a year ago when I looked at every 996 that was listed on eBay.
That said, I bought my MY99 C4 and the three cars I bought before that off eBay, and it's very hard to say what would have happened to Mark's bidding if it had been left as-is. I rarely bid until the end unless it's something I dearly want or there's a Buy-It-Now, meaning that someone could poach it before the end of the auction. There's just no good reason to bid until the end on a No Reserve auction.
I had a chance to buy a really nice 04 S that only had a slight hit to the left front...replaced the panel and the left front wheel....but I passed strictly becasue it was a salvage. Those of us on this forum who know Mark and have read about the kudos he's gotten and recognition of his skills....wouldn't have as much heartburn over buying a salvaged car as someone who was just signing onto eBay. Most folks are warned that the Porsche unibody cant' withstand any hit and that you're buying into trouble if you buy a salvage car. It may not be correct....but it's the perception of trouble and misinformation that guides the prospective buyers.
Sure, and unfortunately, when one is in the market to spend $30k on what might be a third or fourth car, there's really no reason to take a chance on a car with a story.
Though technically, my 996 came with a story, but since the story ended with "new engine and 24-month warranty", I bit anyway.
