i have a 2 year warranty and from my service records i think the rms was changed, calling the dealer tomorrow for explanations.

The dealer replaced my RMS (under warranty) when I took it in to have some routine maintenance work completed.

i have a hard time understanding that porsche would put headers and cats that eventually people change for better.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They'll make somewhere between no difference and costing you low end power in exchange for top end.
Recently purchased a 2001 996 basalt black C2 .
natural brown full leather and some little extras.
the car runs great at 17000 miles ..
THE RMS and engine failures iam reading about are starting the freak me out ! i have a 2 year warranty and from my service records i think the rms was changed, calling the dealer tomorrow for explanations.
Nice to be a member but i have to admit some of these threads are making me lose sleep !
Nice to be here.
17k miles and a RMS change....I think you don't have to lose sleep....just enjoy the ride! And it is going to be a nice ride
Love the natural brown leather..
the full leather is nice. took me almost 1 year to find this color match.
I am from Canada and bought the car in Dallas. Park place porsche, probably the most reputable dealer ive been to in the States.
The car is really really solid, it feels and smells new.
With the strong dollar i was debating the 2005 997 and at 25 k more i decided to buy this car with the depreciation and all. Now that iam reading about these engine situations iam freaking out, i dont need this in my life. RMS isin't just a leak !!! Here it seems like its a fatal disease.
Nice to meet you all, i hope you can answer my questions as i have many of them
Pretty car! You'll notice, that while there are a lot of posts about engine explosions on this board, there are far more posts about "my car runs great!" You'll probably be just fine, and truth be told, it's really out of your control - so don't worry about it! Just ennoy the car, it's something special!
Don't lose sleep!
These cars are amazing and I promise that everytime you walk out of the house and see the car sitting there, you'll get this silly grin on your face that you can't wipe off!
I still get it every time.
Nice carbon package....WELCOME ABOARD!!! Don't worry about the major issues you see here...despite what people report, they are not as common as you think. This is the mecca of 996 ownership, so you'll see everything here. And FWIW....the RMS fix is roughly 800 bucks...and while that's still a bunch of moola...certainly not the end all.
DRIVE THE **** OUT OF YOUR CAR AND DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF.
j
you have the 3.4... be afraid, be very afraid... never track the car, rms already? your done... and its not even a real porsche. Enjoy the ride and lack of sleep....
kidding
errico - Welcome to Rennlist! Congrats on getting the sweet lookng P-car! Thanks for sharing the pics!
Don't worry about RMS. First off, you said you have a two year warranty, so don't sweat the RMS issue. Most RMS leaks just "weep" a little, some might drip a little oil, but it is VERY rarte that any of them gush oil. A leaking RMS does NOT result in any type of catastrophic engine failure. The RMS part costs about $70 - $90 US. The labor is about $700 to drop the engine. Some guys, whose cars are out of warranty, don't even bother to change a leaking RMS until they need to replace the clutch. That way they pay the labor to drop the engine only once and kill two birds with one stone. Hell, a set tires will cost you almost twice as much as a RMS replacement.
The dealer replaced my RMS (under warranty) when I took it in to have some routine maintenance work completed. I did not even know it was leading, never a drop of oil on the garage floor.
Just drive it like you stole it and enjoy every minute of it!
Nice looking car and welcome to the board that tells you one day to drive the hell out of the car, and then the next day to be careful when you do. You can read that all day long on any board about any car, so just don't worry about it, enjoy your ride
nice color combo with the full leather.
i wouldn't worry about RMS. see my other post with pic? a card-board under the car in the garage is good way to tell if RMS leaks.
Nice car....don't sweat the worries about RMS etc., instead use your new car , drive it hard and follow reccomended services in your manual. I've done the cardboard trick for about 13 months now and.....no signs of oil leakage yet!
Congrats on a beautiful car, love the interior color. Don't lose too much sleep, things tend to get slightly over exaggerated on the web, particularly as this is a p-car forum specifically, the issues are bound to be repeated and maginfied. Engine failure is very rare, and can happen with any car. You also have a warranty, so no worries - Enjoy!
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE REPLIES.
I won't worry about the RMS leak. Fould the service records and it seemed mine was done 2 weeks before Porsche deilvered the certified car to me, probably as a pre-caution. Done on July 13 2007 !
I had other leaks on my list, let you know when i could read the report properly.
The car runs really well, its solid but it needs more power. I just find that its something that Porsche should have added, elegant car but missing that little something under that wing
Thank you all for your kind words.
With respect ,I seriously doubt you can use half of what it's got. If you doubt that, go to a track day and ride shotgun for a few laps with someone experienced. You'll be blown away.
What you may think the car lacks is low end torque. That's typical of engines like this, and the price you pay for the way they run at speed. If you plan to 'fix' this by modding, be careful and do your homework. A lot of 'horsepower' mods for these engines only exaggerate their power-at-high-rpm characteristics.
Congrats on the ride and welcome to the 996 circus. The RMS thing is a big nothing, unless it's chronic. As for engine failures, well, this car is like dating a pretty girl. Fun, but it comes with its price and its risks. In the scheme of things, this particular risk is pretty low.

You are probably right, i can't drive this car the way most people drive it especially the track guys. Coming from the vette and mustang stuff it seems like it doesn't pull or scare you as much. I love the ride quality but it doesn't have that wow effect on straight acceleration. I will upgrade to the pse exhaust and maybe the noise will change my thinking
.
Thanks for your comments, i know nothing about mods to be honest. if i can modify this car without effecting anything serious then i might think about it. i heard several exhausts out there but PSE has an incredible sound to it. Regardless if it gives more horses or not i will be buying those mufflers. The question i have is can i have after market cats and headers to fit that muffler or is it just a waste of money?
i have a hard time understanding that porsche would put headers and cats that eventually people change for better. With their resources i would think they know whats going on, and i think they do. I am new to all this stuff so any comments are really appreciated.
thanks
If you were into 'vettes and 'stangs, then it's low end torque you miss for sure!
BTW, i didn't mean to suggest that you personally couldn't use all the power. Most of us, I suspect, don't. But if you can find a clear stretch of safe road, take it north of 5,000 rpm. It's a whole different animal. You'll love it, or maybe you won't. But it's a different approach to 'power' than your Detroit iron and you kind of have to buy into that. Once this engine is really on the boil, it's as much as or more than I can safely handle on the street, that's for sure, just speaking for myself.
In terms of mods, unlimited info on this forum. My .02, do the exhaust for sure. A good one really does make a bit more usable power, and the sound will connect you to the car and make you grin. For you, I'd avoid headers and cats. They'll make somewhere between no difference and costing you low end power in exchange for top end. Great for trackies, less great for the rest of us. After market stuff isn't necessarily "better", it just changes the tradeoffs that Porsche chose. Porsche chose to make the system somewhat restrictive in order to maximize the low end torque as much as they practically could. I don't personally think it would be to your taste.
YMMV and all that. Have fun!
