I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it was the car, not you, that induced the wave from the "gorgeous girl."
Leading evidence: 'car, not you' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'car, not you' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust idle up' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Steve: I had the same problem with the 996; it was surging and hunting, especially when I'd come up to a stop light or start in the morning...and I did like Porsche 911 said, but in addition, I took off the throttle body and cleaned the front AND back of it.

then I used CDC cleaner but didn't soak it...sprayedit lightly, then took a rag and soaked the rag in the CDC.

I spent about 15 minutes cleaning it thoroughly using a can of compressed air to blow in it during the cleaning process, moving the window to make sure it moved freely, and used those applicators to get all of the junk out.

So do I need to adjust my idle up to 800 to eliminate the problem when I do not have the A/C on ?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

So right now I am thinking the problem has been fixed, however I will do another drive as soon as I can where there are a lot more stops and starts in traffic and really test this out because that was when I really noticed the issue occuring.
It doesn't happen all the time but most of the time my idle will be erratic (or is it considered surging ?)
But when I come to a stop my car will idle around 650 maybe 700, hard to tell using the gauge, but then it will increase on it's own to over 1,000 rpm's, then back down but below 650 to where it seems as if it is going to die, then back up again and down again and will do this unless I give the accelerator a little push to even it out. Very annoying and embarrising.
But when I put the A/C on the idle will go up to 800 rpms and the problem with the erratic idle goes away.
So do I need to adjust my idle up to 800 to eliminate the problem when I do not have the A/C on ? Or ?
Thanks in advance to those that can help me out here since really this is the first issue I have had with the car since I got it 6 months ago.
Oh I did clean the throttle body just recently hoping that would fix the issue but I guess not.

You don't have to disconnect everything, just enough to be able to turn the TBt and see the back side. then I used CDC cleaner but didn't soak it...sprayedit lightly, then took a rag and soaked the rag in the CDC. Remember to take off the red plastic extension tube....I didn't and it shot off and went around the corner of the plenum and I had a hell of a time fishing it out. If if falls down the intake you're screwed and have a lot of stuff to take off to find it.
We'll have to get together again in Isleton or Rio Vista and have lunch with some of the other local P guys. You should have come up for Loren's Work on Cars Day. We're going to organize another one.
Chuck
Just remove the 2 screws, saving the gasket and soak the valve with carb cleaner. Make sure the vertical window in the unit moves freely. Reinstall with gasket.
Redridge: quick hijack response here....love the car...put new wheels on it...mucho pleasure....keeps my pacemaker going....great car for CPR chest compressions.
Thanks.
I just went ahead and cleaned it and wow it was really gunked up. I thoroughly cleaned-it using the carb cleaner and some medical grade cotton tipped applicators which allowed me to get well into each opening including behind the vertical window, now it looks close to new, and the vertical window does move freely.
I just started it to make sure that it did since I had disconnected something, but I will not be able to take it for a drive yet to see if that corrected this issue or not as I am still working (I work from home most of the time). So I will let you know if I am good to go once I can take it for a drive.
Thanks again
NO...the problem with Q-Tips (brand name BTW) is that they are too soft and will leave particles from the end when using solvents like carb cleaner. They are good for the ears and baby things, but not recommended for automotive work.
The medical grade units are designed to apply ointments etc. and will not leave any particles and will not break down when using solvents like carb cleaner
OK, just went on short drive to the grocery store with a few stop signs and lights, and once the car warmed-up the idle, without the A/C on, was around 650 to 700 but did not surge or drop, it stayed pretty stable. So right now I am thinking the problem has been fixed, however I will do another drive as soon as I can where there are a lot more stops and starts in traffic and really test this out because that was when I really noticed the issue occuring.
So stay tuned
BTW...coming back from the grocery store a small pickup truck pulled up next to me in the turn lane, and the gorgeous girl driving the car just smiled and waved at me, so I had to wave back but then she was gone...shhh, don't tell the wife, but yes I still got it

What do you mean a little longer??? Hell, I let you bask in the glow of your unrequited admirer for 4 hours. I'm really just trying to save your life here. "How?" you ask! To paraphrase Casey Kasem "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars otherwise you will float off into space and die a horrible, grizzly death!" I didn't get the feeling that your feet were on the ground!
Hey Sid
it seems to have but I have again only gone for a short drive, I need to take a longer drive to make sure which I will do this weekend.
But I would still go ahead and do the cleaning anyways because it doesn't hurt.
"hey Sid" : lol that is a photograph of mine of him in Tulsa by Roberta Bayley in '78.
I hope that my idle problem may be centered on that area because I have used techron 2x and it briefly helped, so maybe this could be the cure but I have never changed the fuel filter either and don't want to tackle that on my own.
Wow you got to see him...brilliant and yes I am jealous
At the 30K service I believe they change the fuel filter, I bought my car right after that service was done so I am not 100% sure.
But go ahead and clean the valve well like I did. I spent about 15 minutes cleaning it thoroughly using a can of compressed air to blow in it during the cleaning process, moving the window to make sure it moved freely, and used those applicators to get all of the junk out. It takes about 5 minutes for the R&R because I had a tube in the way of the back screw that caused a little inconvenience.
While in there you might as well clean the throttle body which I did too but over a month ago thinking that would fix this issue but it didn't.
Thanks for the help. I'm going to pick up some cleaner today.
And no, unfortunately, I didn't see the Pistols. I own the photograph, it was taken by writer/photographer Roberta Bayley right before the band broke up, he broke down, killed his girl and then himself. I guess he was a little punk!
Well I am still jealous that Roberta saw the Sex Pistols, hey the Misfits are still around and will be playing in S.F. next month, might go see them
Rather see The Exploited though and I believe they are still doing gigs in England at least.
GL with the cleaning of the throttle body etc.
Yep is confirmed that cleaning the ICV has corrected my erratic idle issue as I went on a nice drive yesterday with open roads and several stop and start situations, but I did not experience any issues sitting at the light with my idle as I did before.
So thanks for those that came to my assistance with this issue.
BTW...I found a 76 station that I can get 100 octane fuel at, OK it was $6.69 a gallon, but I went ahead and put some in, couldn't really tell much difference because I have not had a chance to test it, but I am sure I will get something out of it since I can only find 91 everywhere else.
