When I was working at ford in the crash test department, I had the opportunity to crash a few of those.

JC, I must say that when I read the first sentence I thought "Oh, ****, here comes the bad news!" I was relieved to hear the good test results.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My "be my own boss" business didn't work out as I had planned.
My wife's MB CLK goes back to the leasing company tomorrow. Here are a few pics of her new car. Just to make sure this isn't too far OT, you can see my 996 in the garage in the 1st pic.
The car is a 2007 Mazda 6 Touring with a V6. I was able to negotiate a pretty good deal and got 20.36% off sticker price. We actually bought it on Saturday but they had to add a couple of things that she wanted on the car. I picked it up from the dealer today and spent 4 hours detailing it this afternoon before she got home from work this evening. She was very pleased with how it looked, so it was worth the effort. It's not an MB, but it is paid for!
Just wanted to share this with my Rennlist buds!
I have to say the car looks good....better than the mada 6 my inlaws rented when they visited. color and leather interior makes all the difference. And on top of it all... have your wife downgrade and you can keep the P!! this is a win win situation!!
Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to keep the P-car!
My "be my own boss" business didn't work out as I had planned. While I didn't lose any money, I didn't make much either. 65+ hours per week and didn't make squat! My wife, who is a school teacher, will make more money this year than I will.
That has never happened before in 32 years of marriage.
So I am back in the job market again. Anybody need a productivity, budgeting, "Best Practices" guru? Obviously, I work for peanuts!
It is tough running your own busines, it doesn't matter how good or bad you are it is marketing skills that keep you in business!! And marketing is a PAIN!! Remember Tim what goes up must come down.....but this works the other way as well!! And getting ride of cars is better than getting ride of your home!
Maybe you can start a porsche site....and ask a lot of signup fee!
Tim, I don't know your situation but Dec 31 2005 I JUMPED out of the corp world and six figures to start my own business too. I spent most of my savings to learn the biz and fell flat on my face. My wife too made the $$ that year and was headed the same direction this year until POOP all of a sudden things just seemed to click into place and now I have made enough for the entire year in about 3 months.
Maybe you just need to hang in there. I know a tough call but you will have to decide. BTW, when I jumped out I jumped into something that I love and followed my heart. Now I am really pleased.
HEY, anyone looking for a good deal on an enclosed race car trailer, hauler, Freightliner MotorHome, Garage unit or ToterHome??? That is what I do now, help solve the worlds (mostly racers) towing and hauling needs. (Ad)
Thanks for the continued support.
Good luck with your decision or search. I would love to have a guy like you on my team if I was in the postition to need someone.
All the best,
eric
Tim, Eric is 100% on the money (figuratively and literally)
I did the same thing. Contrary to what most think, I actually made MORE money than my wife when we got together. I worked as a consultant for a pretty well know DC area IT company and was paid very well. But my true happiness and my real love was teaching. I mean why in the world did I go to all the schooling I did? To make money or be happy? I get so much satisfaction out of being in the classroom and so much so that if I had to, I would "downsize" my standard of living if my wife couldn't bring in the paycheck she does.
Moral to the story as most will tell you (some prefer to chase the dollar) is that the best thing you can do in life as a profession is the ONE thing that brings you great happiness and brings out the passion in you. You can't put a price on that. Trust me, the income will come in due time. And if not? What would you rather have?
Tim, the Mazda looks great. They're affordable, reliable and great commuters. My son has a 3s and loves it! Now, get the clear corners on and best of luck with job hunt. I've been there, too.
Thanks guys, for the comments on the wife's car and on the job/career comments.
Phil, I don't even know if Mazda makes clear side markers. I haven't searched for a Mazda Forum...... yet!
For what it's worth:
Running your own company is tough. I am in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I have two companies; one provides commercial and residential security. The other designs and builds mid to high end home theaters and corp. presentation systems throughout the US. It is tough and after 18 years, I still do the sixty hour weeks at least once a month.
The life-long entrepreneur will usually crash and burn a couple of times before they get it right. That's the statistic and the nature of the beast. I have a few friends that are there and I tell them from my own experiences to appropriate the proper cash flow and have all of your accounting practices perfect and well understood before attempting the adventure. Six months post-9/11, I took a personal financial hit of around 250k from my savings because of the bankruptcies and losses from the building industry. It really caused me to look at the desire to press forward and made think twice about whether I wanted to continue to carry the torch of risk vs. reward in an ownership role.
Deliver a pizza or two to keep that P-car while you are looking to make that car payment. I can share the stories of making the struggle work out in the early years to make things work. I am sorry to hear things did not go as planned but don't let the dream go, it is worth it in the end.
Dell,
That's an interesting perspective. My friends and I often discuss the monetary value of happiness. Would it be worth a 10%, 20%, 50% reduction in income to go from a humdrum daily life to a fun and enjoyable life???? It's interesting to get different people's perspective on this topic.
If my wife said next month that she didn't want to practice medicine anymore and just be a stay at home mom, I would be more than fine with it and support the family on a meager professor's salary. I have no problem at all selling our beautiful home that we just built and move into an apartment or a small home as well as sell the cars. Of course I would just trade down the GT3 to an older 911 and make it a kick **** track car. There is no better satisfaction than doing what you love and never having to think in your current job "I would really love to do 'x' with my life".
Your wife's new car has the right color combo and most importantly is paid in full! I started my company 16 years ago and I still look forward to work each day. The 'material' trophies can all be replaced at some future date, but truly enjoying what you do everyday for a vocation is a valuable asset that most people will never have. I'd say your're on track.
Tim, congrats on the new car, enjoy it in good health (because that is most important)! Mazda'a are nice, sold my miata (to buy my house, ok, it's not a big house), they are fun cars to drive. Make sure you enjoy what you do, it makes an enormus difference - ask me how I know, I am looking for a new job myself...
When I was working at ford in the crash test department, I had the opportunity to crash a few of those. When we were starting the ford fusion program we were crashing mazda 6s with body mouldings for preliminary results (practically the same car since they share the same chassis). Nothing but good things to say about the mazda 6.
Whewh! < Tim wipes the sweat off his brow >
JC, I must say that when I read the first sentence I thought "Oh, ****, here comes the bad news!" I was relieved to hear the good test results. Thanks!
Okay we have been nice enough for FAR TOO LONG!!
Mazda is a freakin Japanese piece of crap!! You could have gotten a BMW, AUDI, BOXSTER, ......but an Mazda??? Come on!!
Not bad looking... i have an rx-8, and so far i am okay with mazda.... except for the gas milage on these guys..... anyways, sorry to hear about your business tim......... but you stated it best, everything will be okay.......
OK I got into this late but want to say a few things. First, great car and nice color. I like it
I have my Honda picked out if I ever need to trade down also.
Why, because I have worked for myself for 15 years now. And I never lose the fear. Several good friends have tried and gone back...absolutely no shame. If you don't try you will never fail...and that is sad-er IMHO. Kudos to you for the effort and from what I have learned from and about you on this forum you will do well in the long run. I fail at business ideas regularly and have lost a lot of money in the process. Don't stop is all I keep telling myself. Just don't stop pushing forward Tim and it will always work out.
Steven,
Thanks for te comments on the wife's car. BTW, she drove it for the first time today. She had driven a demo a couple of weeks back, but today is the first time she drove "her" car.
Also, thanks for the encouraging words on the job front. Sometimes it is hard to see past where you currently are in order to look toward the future. I have a few "feelers" out and I am working on a few other leads. I know that sooner or later something will turn up, preferably sooner!
Tim - you're the "mod" guy - I'm sure you can figure out a kit for the auto. How about getting out the Dremel and a some scrap plastic, a jar of rubber cement and a few small springs - voila! Faux Paddle Shifters!!

Nice car Tim, especially the color choice.
I recently lost/quit my job as well, after 11 years. They wanted me to transfer to another positon, and still do what I have been doing, on the side (2 jobs for the same salary!). I said NO thank you, and opted to take a severance package. I was tired of my job anyway, and have been thinking to have a complete career change, so I guess it was good timing that I get paid to leave!
Anyway...it's not easy to get a good-paying job with no prior experience!
I don't have much debt, besides my home mortgage. All 3 vehicles are paid for, including the C4S.
So I thought I'd try a new job hanging around cars since I love them.
I'm now working at a Honda dealership selling cars! Potential to make decent money, and I love working with people and showing cars! But there are some issues that I need to overcome, the hectic work schedule I can adapt to, but I'm trying hard to get used to the attitude of the sales managers that I have to deal with! We'll see how it goes from here, but like what everyone said, things will eventually work out, somehow.......
Good Luck to you!
Cos - thanks for the comments on the car. It is my wife's (and my) first black car. I have never really cared for black, but she wanted to try a black one so I said "go for it." Of course, I will be doing the detailing on it.
I bought some Rejex from Eric (Bumperplugs) the other day and did a complete clay, polish, and sealant detailing job on it. It looks much better than when I picked it up from the dealer. It will be interesting to see how the Rejex holds up.
It's funny you mentioned selling cars. I have been considering that myself.
Tim...your wife has style and class....black is the way (the only way) to go!! My last 5 cars have all been black...and my next one....probably a Hummer H2 ( I know I am stupid!!) will be black as well. And when the car is dirty...then dirty black is nice as well!
