Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Your manual may have stated 10W-40 and 15W-50 but since then the APPROVED oils have changed (see rationale in my first sentence).

Suggestion
Since your oil looked so clean, all they did was 1) change the filter, 2) drained your oil, 3) poured your oil back into the car, and 4) charged you $8.00 per quart for you own oil!
Leading evidence: 'Replace (see rationale in my first sentence)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean all they did was 1)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I assume from looking at these later TSB's that Porsche simply changed their recommendation.

Seems like everyone is talking about 0w40 or 5w40 as the "recommended" oil.

Interesting that 10W40 is not even on the recommended list.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

FWIW, I asked my dealer (Holberts) whether to bring my own Mobil I 0-40 for my oil change - they said that wouldn't be necessary since that's the only one they use!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm planning on my first oil change for my 02 C4S, got the filters from Suncoast and getting ready to purchase the oil.
Open my owner's manual and see reference to recommended weights of >50 degrees: 10w40, 15w40, 15w50 and <50 degrees: 10w40, 10w30, 5w30.
I do a search and ohmygosh!!!! Seems like everyone is talking about 0w40 or 5w40 as the "recommended" oil. Surely the rating system has changed? Has Porsche recommendation changed since my manual was published?
I'm really confused??? I wanted to stay with the official recommendation but now not sure what that is.
Without starting a holy war, can someone clarify my confusion.
Keith
Ray actually there is a later one dated April 11, 2007 and has 9 pages. It is available on Renntech under the TBS section.

However, unless I am mistaken, I think original poster was more concerned about the proper weight of oil to use.
Sounds like 0W40 it is.
But my original question was relating to what's listed in the owner's manual vs what's shown on the new TSB's and such. Looking at the owner's manual I had decided to give 10w40 a try as it seemed to be a full season oil for the NC area.
I assume from looking at these later TSB's that Porsche simply changed their recommendation.
Keith
Yup. My policy on this stuff is to take whatever Porsche's current advice is. In the highly unlikely event that this advice causes me a problem, I've got someone rich, accountable and accessible to blame. Anonymous dudes on the internet possess none of the foregoing qualities.
Interesting that 10W40 is not even on the recommended list. So I guess I will also go with either 0W40 or 5w40 (whichever is better for all-season use).
Maybe the 1st thread everyone should be directed to upon accessing Rennlist is the "which oil" thread
Believe me, I'm not flaming anyone! This was the 1st question I asked and my intro to rennlist.
So one of those threads is mine
The most CURRENT TSB is the one you should always follow. Why? Technology changes, R&D changes, etc, etc, etc..
Your manual may have stated 10W-40 and 15W-50 but since then the APPROVED oils have changed (see rationale in my first sentence).
0W-40, 5W-40, and 5W-50 and the ONLY oils approved by PCNA for our cars. If you are running your car on the track in Vegas during the summer, then it makes sense to run 15W-50 but not out here in NC (or just about anywhere else).
You've already opened up a can of worms by posting this thread and should have known better from doing a search. FYI....rec'd should not be in quotes as you stated. It is in fact NOT rec'd, rather APPROVED and ONLY the ones approved for your car.
Just b/c your manual says something doesn't mean it is written in stone. As research becomes more and more sharp and acute, the list will get tweaked. Just the basic underlying premise of research......improving upon past research.
Oh come on Dell, it's all to do with emissions and Porsche being fined for a fleet of vehicles that aren't up to current US regs.
They went to 0W40 to save a few $M down the road in US fines - everyone knows that!
Guys - I usually don't get involved with the "oil" threads other than to throw a little popcorn around. However, after reading all of these "oil" threads, I am so confused! Since I plan to change my oil today, I need your sage advice. Yesterday I bought 1 quart of each of the following weights of oil (approved weights shown in bold).
0w-20
0w-30
0w-40
5w-20
5w-30
5w-40
5w-50
10w-30
15w-50
By my calculations, the TPB (Tim's Personal Blend) will be a 5W-34.4 blended weight.
So I have 3 questions:
1) Will my car be totally protected across the full spectrum?
2) When I remove the oil filter, does it make any difference what color oil filter wrench I use?
3) What color are the shoes my wife bought last night?
Thanks, in advance, for the help!

FWIW, I asked my dealer (Holberts) whether to bring my own Mobil I 0-40 for my oil change - they said that wouldn't be necessary since that's the only one they use! Of course, they did a very careful job - it took 1.5 hours for oil service and bleeding brakes - total was < $200 (with PCA discount), which really surprised me. I think they felt sorry for me.
Yeah, I'm sure they did feel sorry for you. After they bled the brakes, then they did the oil service. Since your oil looked so clean, all they did was 1) change the filter, 2) drained your oil, 3) poured your oil back into the car, and 4) charged you $8.00 per quart for you own oil!
I'm actually doing 6qt 0W40 with the rest 15W50. I read that on Rennforums or one of the FAQs somewhere.
Not to hijack the thread but...
I hope nobody has an issue with mixing oil, do they?
thanks,
Amir
