There is a reluctor wheel on the end of the camshaft, I pulled the cam sensor, inspected with a borescope and compared with another engine to be sure.

I've checked oil pressure on both banks and its above minimum spec and same on either bank so I don't think that is causing any issue, it's just not where I would ideally like to see it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, looking to see if any of you wise folks have some ideas to help me out. I have an 02 911 Carrera cab with some reoccurring codes that have me pulling out what little hair I have left. No drivability problems aside from the engine light at this point P0344 Phase sensor 1(camshaft hall effect sensor 1) I then get misfire codes for all cylinders on bank 1 as well I've swapped the cam sensors and the code doesn't follow When I watch camshaft deviation values both banks are happy at idle, sitting around -1(specified value 0). When I bring it up off idle bank 2 raises steady with the specified value to around -9 whereas bank 1 jumps to positive 42 then back to the negatives and settles around the same as bank 2. It happens quickly and I don't feel anything odd but I'm assuming that blip is where its setting the code/misfires I've seen a few forum posts of similar issues but nothing with a final solution, hoping someone knows something I don't For a bit of history, this is a recently refreshed motor(rebuilt long block overbore 3.8 with a few ancillaries reused) of which oil pressure has been a bit of a battle. The pressure is above minimum spec but not as high as I'm used to seeing on these cars and doesn't ramp up with rpm as much as I'd like. I did have an issue with the Bank 1 cam phaser, it failed on me while driving and threw bank 1 timing out approx. 20-30 degrees. Sounded like a semi engine braking when I tried to give it throttle and had to have it towed home. I dropped the engine and replaced bank 1 cam phaser with a used unit(nothing new available at the time), used new bolt/washer/bushing, replaced the bank 1 chain tensioner and re-timed the engine. Its run solid since then but has started giving me these codes Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Is there anything you can do with respect to the engine rebuilder?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I rebuilt the engine, so this exclusively my problem. I've been through my build pictures and nothing is out of place, engine runs and sounds great. Some/most ancillaries reused and honestly can't tell you what oil pressure was like previous to the rebuild either. Rebuild was due to bore scoring and overall is a fairly low mileage engine though. I've checked oil pressure on both banks and its above minimum spec and same on either bank so I don't think that is causing any issue, it's just not where I would ideally like to see it. As far as this code the engine is throwing I'm dealing with all reused parts, but some of them require large amounts of work to deal with. I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this P0344 before

POST 5Original post

That code according to the manual is an open circuit for the camshaft sensor. Since swapping the hall sender didn't change it, it's probably wiring/plug or you damaged the phase sensor wheel (the sensor plate on the end of the camshaft).? Can you explain what you mean by your "bank 1 cam phaser" failed on you. I have not heard the term "cam phaser". What part failed?

POST 6Original post

Isn't there a type of reluctor washer on the end of the camshaft and it can move out of position or get bent during reassembly (or be forgotten during reassembly). I read this somewhere...

POST 7Original post

The phase sensor wheel is fixed to the end of the camshaft. It is a metal plate with various notches/bends in it. The hall sendor (camshaft position sensor) is supposed to read the sensor wheel notches as the engine rotates. If that sensor wheel is damaged, it will definitely cause this problem.

POST 8Original post

@drowningin966 I'd like to learn more about your earlier cam actuator failure. I just completed a similar rebuild and am having issues that sound very similar. PM me? Charley

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The oil is not my issue, It's gone through the break in period/oil and now back to full synthetic. Not looking to start a debate on oil weights/brands just trust me when I say there are many engines rolling around with this oil and no issues. By phaser I'm referring to the intake cam gear which adjusts to advance or retard timing with oil pressure based on what the ECU wants. I had a failure where it was stuck in either the full advanced or retarded setting to the point my base timing was off and it essentially shut down the bank. Basically think like the timing chain jumped a few teeth on the intake cam. There is a reluctor wheel on the end of the camshaft, I pulled the cam sensor, inspected with a borescope and compared with another engine to be sure. All looks good. Swapped the control solenoids for the intake cam phasers as well and my problem remains on bank 1. Next I think I'll be scoping bank 1 and 2 cam sensors and comparing the waveforms to see if it matches the bull**** I see on my scan tool live data. Really hoping for someone with technical knowledge of this issue or something really similar

POST 10Original post

Hopefully someone with better insight can chime in. You have swapped the hall sensor as well as the actuator between banks and the problem doesn't follow. You replaced the "phaser" which by your explanation must be the camshaft adjuster (PET #45 part 99610505104) with a used adjuster/gear. The only thing I can think of is the signal is not getting to the actuator (plug, wiring or ecu) or there is an oil blockage in the head that is not allowing the oil flow through the actuator. Regarding the camshaft phaser/adjuster, I assume you confirmed that the used part was bank 1 specific?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
