Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just installed some PS2 tires and was considering 295/35/18 on the rear, but went with 295/30/18 in order to stay within the +/- 3.0% of the 285/30/18 size.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A local tire shop has a pair of Falkens 285/35-18 that he will make a smokin' deal on. I previously had 275/35-18s, which were fine, but I'm not sure about going up to the 285s. Any thoughts on whether these will fit are appreciated. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Yes, they will fit. However, stock OEM size is 285/ 30 /18. The diameter of the 285/ 35 /18 is 4.34% larger than the OEM tire size and most tire manufacturers state that you should stay within 3.0% (+/-) of the original tire diameter. Your current tires (275/35/18) are 3.29% larger in diameter than OEM size and the 285/35/18 you are looking to get are 1.09% larger than your current tire. I just installed some PS2 tires and was considering 295/35/18 on the rear, but went with 295/30/18 in order to stay within the +/- 3.0% of the 285/30/18 size. POST 3Original post

I just did some research on tire sizes and feel a need to re-activate this thread. Tim, the link to the tire diameter tool is great and your explaination is correct if you take the 285/30/18 tire as basis. However, according to our owner's manual (at least for the MK1 996) the OEM rear tire size is 265/40/18. When you put the 265 tire as basis in the calculator, the 285/30/18 tire is 2.26% smaller in diameter and then 285/35/18 is 2.13% larger, so both tires are within the +/- 3% tolerance. If you compare the tires to the front tire size of 225/40/18, then all 3 tires are within the 3% tolerance although the 285/35/18 is with +2.98% right at the border (265/35/18: -0.87%; 285/30/18: +1.4%). So both 285 rear tires seem to work but Porsche did obviously prefer to suggest the 225/40/18 + 285/30/18 combination.
