I've used Carbotech XP8 and XP10 on a few cars over the past few years (A5, GTI, RX8) along with ATE fluid at Mid-Ohio with no issues.

The Cup brake ducts help quite a bit, I prolonged the life of my front rotors on my 996GT3 by using the cup ducts in front and using more aggressive pads in the rear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

These are $60 for the pair at Suncoast. Do they really channel more air to the front rotors for DE events and keep the rotors cooler?

POST 2Original post

If you REALLY want extra cooling, the $250/pair cup ducts are the way to go! Oddly, I have never looked to see what brake cooling it has but I could compare them to my stock GT3 ducts that I took off to put on the Cup ones if you like. It also depends on what "level" of driver you are when it comes to braking. As well, the type of track you are running.

POST 3Original post

Look for the 997 GT3 ducts. There's a couple of threads floating around with part numbers in them. They were < $20 for the pair when I got them. They're not really much inprovement over stock but are a touch better none the less. As Dell stated, the cup ducts are the way to go for serious track use. They hang pretty low to run on the street though. Andy

POST 4Original post

Andy is 100% correct on the clearance of the ducts. IIRC, the distance I had to the ground from the bottom of my ducts was 2 inches. Granted that was on a lowered track prepped GT3. Still, my guess would be about 3" of clearance on a street car.

POST 5Original post

AFAIK, brake ducts rely partly on venturi effect to do their job. In other words, it's not just the volume of air but how fast that air is moving that cools the brakes, and the cooling duct is like a funnel to manage that speed. GT3 ducts are bigger because the assumption is track speeds rather than highway speeds. When I replace mine (as is necessary from time to time around here), I stick with the OE size. EDIT... because a duct that's too big for the job is almost as bad as no duct. Sorry for the edit. Just wanted to be clear.

POST 6Original post

so if you hang around speed bumps you might get lucky and find a set BTW OP - are your brakes getting too hot? (or do you feel the need to buy something)

POST 7Original post

$11.41/each at the dealer for mine. i added with oem sport pads, braided lines, and ate fluid. all mods combined seemed to make a difference on the track, but hard to say how much exactly as it was about 6 mo. between track days.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7261345

I'm an intermediate DE driver. I'll probably just stay stock, except for pads and fluid this spring.

POST 9Original post

The 996 in all versions has inadequate brake cooling for track and that includes the 996 GT3. The Cup brake ducts help quite a bit, I prolonged the life of my front rotors on my 996GT3 by using the cup ducts in front and using more aggressive pads in the rear. Pagid RS 29 yellow in front and RS-14 black in the rear. This also improves the poor brake balance of the 996 series which had too much braking in front and not enough in the rear. A stock GT3 with OEM or the same pads front and rear, used on the track, would wear out its front rotors (death by cracks) in ten days or less. The rear rotors looked like they had never been used. With the RS-14s in back and the Cup ducts my rotors lasted 30 days. YMMV of course. Best,

Cup/RSR ducts are a lot better. They are bigger and scoop a lot more air. They also occasionally scrape as they hang lower. For the rear, go with a set of 996 GT2 brake ducts.

They are $30 not $60 http://www.e-partssales.com/miva/mer...Code=brakesC4S I just got them because they are $30... I only track 2 or 3 times a year, but i think its a good upgrade for the Price

POST 12Original post

Wouldn't the ducts push air to the wrong parts of the brake if not hit air? They were designed for larger brakes.....not the 996/986 S system.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7265330

Oh that's good to know for the price. It looked like $30 each since it said 1 in the quantity.

they come as a Pair, PS: I got it from Suncoast last Summer... If you wanna get it, do it now... Prices go up by 4% Feb 1st, cheak out their website for Info...

Are you overheating your system now? As for the scoops, they do help. But you need to keep the entire braking system in mind. If you are running street tires and stock-ish pads, they will make a fairly substantial difference on cooling. If you are running r-comps and aggressive pads, just the scoops won't be enough. You will probably need better cooling in general- possibly including GT3 ducts, GT3 scoops, SRF, and slotted rotors. Personally, I do not recommend the cup scoops. The may be great for cooling while they are attached, but drop 2 wheels and your $125 scoop is history. They also scrape driveways and other inclines as they are substantially bigger than the GT3 ducts. -td

I haven't had the chance to overheat the system and I probably won't. We'll see in April when DEs start. I've used Carbotech XP8 and XP10 on a few cars over the past few years (A5, GTI, RX8) along with ATE fluid at Mid-Ohio with no issues. Since the ducts are fairly cheap, I was curious. Even though the 911 is about 300 - 400 lbs heavier than the RX8, the brake system should be fine for my level (NASA level 2).
