Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

sounds like a throw out bearing to me, get it checked prior to the warranty ending
Leading evidence: 'Check prior' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check prior' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Should get the sound checked under warranty in any case.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sorry people but I had to grab your attention somehow.I am a noephite.I purchased a 2004 C4S cabriolet and I love this car. It has 8 mos.left on the warranty and I want to know if there is a 'problem' or , if what I hear is 'normal'.When the car has been driven for ,say 15 minutes, if I am in first on at a red light ( and on a hill).when I let the clutch out-therfe is a distinct rattling sound. Similarly,if I park my car, turn off the engine, then start it ( in neutral)-the same sound. Can anyone tell me if this is par for the course??I would really appreciate any feedback.

The throw-out bearing is part of the clutch assembly, it functions when the clutch is disengaged. Otherwise it freewheels. Should get the sound checked under warranty in any case.
Sorry, can't help you here since I've never driven my C4S for >15 minutes
Only kidding, I think. But, the rattle should be thoroughly checked out - certainly doesn't sound normal. Enjoy your car!!
Robert,
Can you "repeat" the sound on demand? If so, it would be great to post a sound bite.
For the record, my MY00 C2 often "clunks" when going into first gear - but it is not a rattle.
-td
It only rattles
a) when warmed up ( driving for 15 min.or more and only from a standing stop when I go into first and just at the end of disengaging the clutch
or
b) same as above -even more if I am on a hill ( going up of course abd from a standing stop.
c) after being warmed up-if I turn off the engine, then start it again-from neutral-I still hear the sound.
Otherwise I don't hear it. Are there any doctors in the house with a degree who can give me a professional diagnosis?
I tend to agree this is the most likely, some probably rattle more than others or not at all. There are a couple of long springs in the flywheel that are being compressed under the conditions you describe. Try to locate the sound, if it is central or more right or left to rule out other possibilities.
I've had two rattles in my C4S. Both come on when warm, and either one can be the source of your rattle.
One is the cat. It is a rattle that is continuous at idle once the engine is warm, becomes less obvious as you rev up the engine.
The other was the clutch throwout bearing. Negligible rattle when engine first starts up cold, more obvious when warm. Easy to check. Step on the clutch. That engages the bearing and should make the rattle disappear, only to reappear when you release the clutch.
Your rattle could be one or the other, both, or neither. Regardless, have the dealership check it out. The C4S does not rattle "normally".
