Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The stock sub is too low ohm to be used and will need to be replaced but that's it.
Leading evidence: 'Replace but' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill by boston acoustics (?)' (1 discussions). They used Focals and another brand I can't recall.

Rear speakers are pretty much just for fill so I wasn't too concerned about them.

I'll likely just use a good HU and not a separate amp.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sold my Turbo Cup track car, and I'm leaning towards a 2004 996 with the base stereo. I didn't find answers I wanted in search. Yes, I know the engine sound is music to the ears. This will initially be a daily driver/track car which will likely become mostly a track car over time. I want to use an ipod with easy control thru the head unit.
Is the base stereo a MOST interface? I know about the $700 MOST adapters for an ipod. What I really would like is to install an Alpine or Kenwood with the good ipod setup to view and control the ipod. Is there an adapter to connect a standard HU to the MOST? Is it better to just bypass the MOST and wire the HU to speakers conventionally? Any advice on this is appreciated. I've become an ipod addict, particularly on trips.
Newport is of course correct. And you'll probably end up with a better system by getting rid of the Porsche amp and speakers. The speakers in my car were totally pathetic, better suited for a Buick ... in fact, I think Buick's are probably better.
What speakers did you use or are available? I'm not going for a killer stereo- I just want decent access to my ipod. I'll likely just use a good HU and not a separate amp. Is the factory wiring to the speakers conventional, so you can readily wire the HU to the speakers?
If you want to retain the stock speaker grills, you can have a shop install other speakers behind the grills. It requires some customization. I had a shop install speakers they recommended to my base sound system. They used Focals and another brand I can't recall.
The problem is that the speaker size is pretty small. The highs and mids are much much better, but the system still lacks bass and is barely adequate. I have thought about installing a subwoofer behind the rear seats like the Bose systems, but I have not done it yet.
Alpine head unit w/ JL Audio 300/4 Amp powering Focal separates in the dash and door with fill by Boston Acoustics (?). Rear speakers are pretty much just for fill so I wasn't too concerned about them. At least not as much as the fronts. There are a *bunch* of sub options for these cars. Ai design has a nice unit that puts an 8" in a small enclosure in the pass. footwell. Actually looks pretty nice. Another option is a custom box, a' la Bose, using 3, 4, or 5 JL 6w0's behind the rear seats. This issue has been discussed a lot on here, Renntech, and 6speed.
In my 2003 MOST car I went with the AVIC-Z2, JL Audio 500/5 amp, Kicker 8" Sub and left the stock speakers in the car.
There is no need to replace the Bose speakers at this time unless you are a stereo freak and have hawk-like ears. The average Joe will be fine with the stockers for now. It doesn't cost anything to hook up a system and live with the stock speakers for a while and see if they make you happy or not.
The stock sub is too low ohm to be used and will need to be replaced but that's it.

Build a custom box. I did and put in 2 Pioneer 10" shallow mount subs behind the rear seats and it sounds awesome.
Of course I am not using the stock head unit and have a 4 channel amp for the upgraded speakers in the stock locations and a mono amp for the subs.
Took a little doin', but I used to do custom audio for 10 years many moons ago.
