Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Reset code' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I know if it continues to blink, it's likely a jammed cat.

With the scanner you can reset the light and see if it comes on again.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, this past weekend my 'CEL' came on. I have tried searching while at work and home, and both computers come up with a white window after I hit search. First, is there currently a problem with the search function? Second, what is causing this? I know newer cars can throw a CEL due to the gas lid not being completely on, this is not the casein my instance. Does anyone know what else may cause this issue? I am going to bring the car somewhere that has a reader to see the specific error. Do parts stores have readers at their disposal to use if you bring your car to them? Luckily it has been nice out here and I have been able to ride my motorcycle.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Mark
Second Autozone... ive used their loaners a few times.
Then join Renntech.org .They have a list of what the codes mean to your car rather than the generic OBDII.
Could be any number of things. MAF's go bad, so do O2 sensors, and of course the gas cap...
Or buy one of the cheapies mentioned on this board. I paid about $40 for mine. You can get the code, then look it up on here, and save em until you take er in for service. Mine have all been minor and I am able to keep a log. Clearing that darn light is satisfying too, no fun seeing it on.

I'm not trying to steal this thread, but I have a newb question that I really feel stupid asking, but what about a CEL that blinks for 5 minutes, and then just disappears. It happened twice about 4 months ago, and the light works when you turn on the accessories. I know if it continues to blink, it's likely a jammed cat. I noticed a patter it only did it after sitting outside in torrential rain. No problems since though.
Third Autozone, the code for the check engine light will be emission related. With the scanner you can reset the light and see if it comes on again. Reset it a couple of times. Could be bunch of things, MAF, O2, or cracked vacuum hose, even loose gas cap. It won't be the gas cap because that is too easy of a fix. In other cars I have owned I ignored the CEL for years, not sure I would do that w/ P-car tho.
Here's a good newbie cuestion (cue button STILL busted....no intentions on fixing it). If you borrow or use an error code scanner....where do you plug it in?
Hmmm....I'm sure some others wonder too.

I decided that my own OBDII code reader was a good investment, so that I can play in my own time, without needing Autozone or the dealership.
I went to Harbor Trading, who had a range of readers, and bought this model:
OBDII Scanner
I can read and store codes from any modern car - it's worth the few $$ it cost, and has already been extremely useful.
Plugs straight into the port next to the fuse panel - captures codes AND a snap-shot of what was happening when the codes were triggered.
This gives you a better chance of analyzing what happened when the CEL triggered - codes alone are not the whole story.
And of course, you can reset those pesky 'random' codes that cause CEL, but don't have a permanent cause!
I am willing to guess MAF..
when I took delivery of my 01 C2 Cab...the very next day the CEL went on. I thought I did the gas cap thing...but luckily my friend was the one who sold me the car. He did a complete PPI for me so I told him and he gladly let me take it back to the shop that did it. It was the MAF. $500 later...new MAF...and I was so happy he took care of it...as a good friend and seller.
That is why I hesistate to get a CAI...because I KNOW my MAF is new.
