My solution is to use a local touchless drive-thru carwash that does not have any tire rails or other track devices on the floor.

NCDOT started treating the roads here two days before a winter storm - using a mixture that is refered to as 'brine.' Of course I had driven the 996 to work that day...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just did a no soap rinse off of the car with a hose for a few minutes. I've seen fancy advertised salt removers which I wouldn't trust on my car. But, instead of getting down to washing the car I just rinsed with water. I had spent a few hours on the north shore messing about. Anyway does anybody have some official salt removal procedure? I was thinking a few buckets of light soap and water should be a pre soak before actually rinsing with water if I want to take a short cut from actually washing the car at 10pm at night. They close all the car washes with wands to spray the cars off at night around here so I was out of luck doing the usual trick. SO any special tricks guys use that drive their cars on salt treated roads?

POST 2Original post

I haven't found one particular way that works any better than a regular car wash. I wash mine in the garage, as some others do. I suppose in your case, you could have waited until the next day without really causing any damage.

POST 3Original post

French Fries yea, never thought about how much salt is just in the air over there, my rentals always get a film on the car in a few days... the exterior should just be kept well waxed (or product of choice) but there are a lot of places that are tough to wash......... hmmm.... I was thinking WD-40.........WD-40 is a great cleaner (sucks as a lubricator) ye might read up on it and try? also mineral spirits ?

POST 4Original post

power washer.... just make sure you are in low setting, or backed off a bit. I power washed my X5 when the temp got around 40+ here in NJ....

POST 5Original post

Have the same problem, just different circumstances. NCDOT started treating the roads here two days before a winter storm - using a mixture that is refered to as 'brine.' Of course I had driven the 996 to work that day... My solution is to use a local touchless drive-thru carwash that does not have any tire rails or other track devices on the floor. Just a flat cement floor with a undercarriage wash strip that shoots high pressure water on the underside. The only real danger - and it is slight - would be if the moving wash platform broke and fell on the car somehow. And there is no way to get this effect with a hose in your driveway - or even with a pressure washer unless you have a pit to drive over.

POST 6Original post

They make a product for boats used in saltwater called salt-away. Might be worth looking into. Never used it though.

POST 7Original post

I'm in Florida, and the salt air can really leave a film over your car when it's near the water, especially when the wind kicks up. Anyway, the only thing I've found that really gets the salt film off is a wash with soap. Just water never removes the salt. I rinse with a lot of water. I imagine there is some high end cleaner you could spray and rinse away everything, but I've found a good car soap and lots of water does the trick. As for the bottom of the car, I rinse it A LOT but the salt spray just tends to get mostly on the surface of the car, not down into things unless you really leave your car out in the elements. Then it will oxidize all bare aluminum. A good silicone spray on aluminum will keep it from being getting corroded the next time.
