I think that the oil collects in the bell housing and doesn't drain out until the angle is changed (by jacking the car or something else).

I think that the oil was black (I had recently changed the oil so it should have been maple color) because it mixes with the clutch dust.

Also, To replace them, can I just jack the engine to relive pressure and then loosen the nuts to slide them out or are the mounts contsrained in a way that you have to use another method?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok so I jacked up my car to do an oil change and then oil started dropping on the ground. Not pouring but a decent amount came down. There was also a coolant smell and as you know Oil and Coolant are bad signs together... Well I immediately dropped the car to make sure I wasnt on the Oil Pan...I wasnt... Once the heat settled a little i see oil on the UNDERside of the rear drivers engine mount I can see NO oil from the top side of the engine. Now I do have a leaky cam cover seal that I have yet to replace. Is it possible for somehow oil to build up on top of it and then pour out when the car was lifted? I am so confused and I dont know where this oil is coming from. It has stopped dripping and I am going to proceed with the oil change but I am scared that there is a loose hose or something. Is anyone familiar with this area of the engine bay and if any lines are there? Thanks so much! -Keith

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see NO oil ANYWHERE... I dont know where it came from... I just finished my oil change and will keep an eye on it...It's almost as if something got pench or bent open when I jacked it up? O well, any tips are much appreciated.

POST 3Original post

Probably your engine mount. I noticed some really black drops of oil on my garage floor a couple of weeks ago. Oil on the floor was a fact of life when I had my 911SC years ago, but it gave me concern on my 996. Upon inspection, I found my engine bone dry but found oil on the drivers side engine mount. The oil does not smell anything like engine oil. I am just going to replace both while I at it.

POST 4Original post

This doesn't seem to be exactly like your situation but I had a similar mess a few weeks ago. When I jacked up my car I had about a shot glass full of black oil drip out onto the engine mount and floor. After that I didn't see any for a while. Bottomline- there was an RMS leak. I think that the oil collects in the bell housing and doesn't drain out until the angle is changed (by jacking the car or something else). I think that the oil was black (I had recently changed the oil so it should have been maple color) because it mixes with the clutch dust. This does not seem to be your because of the location that you described. Maybe take another look and consider the RMS. I took my 996 in to get the RMS repaired and they told me not to worry about it unless it gets really bad- just make sure that there is enough oil. Hope that my experience helps

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I replaced my RMS and IMS a year ago myself. It has no leaks... I DO have a cam cover leak but I dont see how the oil could of got on the engine mount? On top of this, it was only on the BOTTOM of the mount? WEIRD

POST 7Original post

Engine mounts...they are filled with oil to dampen vibration.

POST 8Original post

engine mounts are liquid filled...might need to replace them. get the gt3 cup mounts for a stiffer feel!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Damn I had NO clue...My M3 was solid bushings...HMMM Im so happy now that I know it isnt something MAJOR... I was jacking up from the rear jack point. It must of put pressure on the rear engine support beyond what the mount could handle... Are the GT3 mounts solid mounts or just stiffer? Also, To replace them, can I just jack the engine to relive pressure and then loosen the nuts to slide them out or are the mounts contsrained in a way that you have to use another method? thanks guys!

go to http://www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm in motor kit section Just relieve pressure from engine mounts with a jack and install one side at a time
