Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Good price (about the same as B&M) and easy to install using the B&M instructions.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay, I'll go...
I chose the B&M. It seemed to be a favorite here, and is made by the same people who make Porsche's unit. I can't give you a comparative, because I've never used another, but I love the change it made, especially after it wore in a bit. Can't comment on installation, because I wimped out and paid someone to do it for me.
The best vendor, hands down, has to be Bumperplugs. Nobody seems to be able to touch their price.
B&M. Easy to install on your own, under $250. I've installed 2 on my own with no issues.
Quick precise shifts.
Got mine for $237 from Titan Motorsports back in 2003.
I bought the Porsche model from Brandywine last year. Good price (about the same as B&M) and easy to install using the B&M instructions. A definite DIY project.
as for shifting, it's both shorter throws with accuracy. The feel is great.
Steve
It is a shorter throw and much stiffer (esp. in cold weather). It definitely feels different. The shift from 2nd to 3rd actually requires a little more precision from the driver with the SSK.
You should try to drive one prior to committing to as it is somewhat difficult to reverse.
I am in the small minority who think it really isn't better. Most folks here seem to love it.
I don't want one. I drove with one before, and yes it's more "sporty", but I didn't see any real benefit. It felt kinda cool, though, but I can shift quite fast without it.
Shortening the throws increases the amount of force needed to shift, and with less throw, it's a little harder to be precise. Also, a short-shifter will wear out your synchros faster than a normal shifter. The faster you shift, the harder your synchros have to work.
B&M SSK from Bumperplugs - Put one in Wifey's 986 first, and she loved it.
So she bought me one for my 996 for Christmas.
Had a Porsche buddy assist on the install - 1 hour with suitable beverage breaks
Best easy mod on the planet
B&M SSK - get it from Eric at Bumperplucs.com for $199. You will love. Do the DIY install, you'll be glad you did it yourself.
Hey, "Uncle" Eric, have you "re-instated" me yet?
No comments about the EVO SSK? Not as short as the B&M, but supposedly easier to shift. Available from Sharkwerks for $220.
Anybody have one of these installed?
bought mine today from Eric at Bumperplugs.com along with the EVO link for the cables. Haven't installed it yet, but will be a project for this weekend!
Bought my B&M not for shorter throw, but because my shifter was kinda sloppy. 8yr old plastic bushing. The new shifter is far more precise. Very nice. And the whole "short" thing grew on my very quickly.
Note that B&M also sells an under body kit that also shortens shifting. But I don't think that kit makes your shifting any more precise. Short and sloppy didn't sound too appealing.
