It turns out Porsche may have replaced a lot of motors needlessly because a gaging tool either wasn't made properly or wasn't being used correctly.

My car had it's motor replaced under warranty at 28K miles due to a Rear Main Seal leak that (supposedly) couldn't be repaired.

(the 996TT GT2 and GT3 still used a water cooled version of the 993 motor).

I would use the car quite a bit but just for street use.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I have recently decided to put my beloved 951 up for sale to start saving for bigger and better things. I plan on saving up for a year or so to get a pretty hefty downpayment on a newer car. I think my limit will be around $29-30k.
So initially I was checking out 993s when I noticed that they are usually at or above the basic 1999 996 prices. I would use the car quite a bit but just for street use. Being 25, I am concerned about the reliability of a higher mileage 996. Is this a car that can be cheaply maintained by a backyard mechanic, or will it require high dollar trips to the dealer for service? I can handle pretty much any issues on the 951, but a rear-engined car might be alot harder.
And finally, have any of you owned or compared the two cars in terms of overall performance and driver enjoyment? The 951 obviously can be made into a very fast car, while the 996 seems to already match most of todays sports cars. So I'm looking for a car thats at least as fast as my current 951.
Any thoughts or other recommendations on possible vehicles?
Thanks,
Josh
The 993 are going to hold value better than the 996. As you noticed 993 currently sell for a premium over 996. The 996 does have a HP edge, a HVAC system that works, better sound system, and more logical controls. Some of the early 996 (2001 and earlier) had engine problems that needed replacement. Yet some 996 have gone 100k plus with no problems. Of course the rebuild of a 993 motor can cost almost double a new 996 crate motor. The 993 is considered the last of the "real Porsches" due not only to it's aircooling, but its build quality and styling. If miles and maintenance are a concern you might be better off finding a lower miles 2002 or later 996. If you're concerned about resale and modding the car a 993 might be a better choice. I made the change to a used 996TT because they are such incredible values. (the 996TT GT2 and GT3 still used a water cooled version of the 993 motor). The 996, Boxster and Cayman use versions of the same engine.
You need to drive both and get a feel for which
you
prefer. They are quite different. I drove both and greatly preferred the 996. The 993 seemed dated by comparison. The 996 fit me like a glove. Again - this is just my personal view after driving both. Since I've never owned a 993 I can't comment on reliability. My car had it's motor replaced under warranty at 28K miles due to a Rear Main Seal leak that (supposedly) couldn't be repaired. Since then it's been trouble free (44K now).
There's a great write-up in the May or June issue of Excellence on the RMS 'problem' with the M96 motor. It turns out Porsche may have replaced a lot of motors needlessly because a gaging tool either wasn't made properly or wasn't being used correctly.
