At the time I put in the bid, it was the closest HT around.
Leading evidence: 'closest ht around' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'closest ht around' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I've been looking for a hard top for my newly aquired C4. Figured I could pick one up for $500-600 and paint it. Did the usual fishing on ebay. Threw in a lowball bid on one in SoCal, and in the mean time I find a nice black top (with black liner to match my interior) about 40 miles away, for a mere $500. Wouldn't you know it, I won the auction for a purple top in Newport Beach for $30. No ****! Now Newport Beach is 450 miles from where I live, and in reality I'm not that stoked to drive all the way down there to SoCal land.... I made the mistake of telling my wife about the $30 top, and she is insisting we "make a weekend of it" and drive down to pick it up..... grrrrrrrrr
How's that? I was planning to take the p-car so I could mount the top to bring it back. Then I'll have a technicolor car for 450 miles! Maybe I'll get a fake beard for the trip... My other option is to take my new planet killer Expedition and see if I can cram it into the back...
MY 2002 was the last year that the rear mounting hardware was pre-installed in the car. For 2003 and later you have to buy and install the latch receivers and RW defroster wiring.
That's a long drive with a different color top...heh heh. When I got mine, red color top installed on my midnight blue color car, I drove the car home with a weird feeling that everyone is laughing at me..., but then who cares, right, as long as we know we got a great deal on the HT. Enjoy your drive home. Man for $30 you cannot lose :-) but make sure though with the seller that it can be safely mount on your car with the special wrench and nothing obvious is missing.
Cheers,
I do not think you will get it in the back of an Expedition - maybe on the roof, but I would not recommend it.
450 miles each way would be one HELL of a weekend drive. Maybe you should make a week out of it? That $30 hard top is going to end up costing you $5,000 in hotel and massages at the Montage, dinners at the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton, shopping at Prada and Gucci at South Coast Plaza, not to mention 45 gals of gas at $4.00 a gallon. Have fun - he he.
At the time I put in the bid, it was the closest HT around. My max bid was a whopping $55. Who'd have thought I'd win for $30...
I'm realllly not looking forward to driving back in a two tone car. Actually I'm not looking forward to driving down on the slabs at all. Maybe I'll at least take 101 down. Coming back - I'll want to have as little road exposure as possible.
It's an 8mm allen wrench. Suggest you bring along a 3/8s inch ratchet to speed it up. Believe it or not, many people were not even picking up these fine tops when their cars (996s) came into the dealerships with them installed. Several dealerships had them stacking up in their parts departments! I love mine. I have the EZ Top hoist for mine, making it a one-man operation.
Bonkur - You don't need the top tool. It's a hex. But the
real point
here is:
Your wife wants to take a weekend drive with you in your sports car.
Who cares where you're going?
Just Say Yes
.
OK, all of you Kalifornia guys HAVE to take your cameras with you this weekend. If you see this red/purple combo, snap a lot of pics! I can't wait to see that color combo!
No sale! Don't let him off the hook that easily. Black & purple combo is not as "exotic" (a.k.a fugly) as red & purple! We need pics of the red & purple!
So why didn't you bid against me? You coulda had it for $60!!!!
Now if you want to offer me $400, I might consider it
(yes, I have been known to be an opportunist)
I'd take the black on black one that you don't need to paint. It'll save you the hassle and you won't have to worry about overspray. I figure you're only out the 30 bucks. Besides, won't it cost arond 200-400 to paint it anyway?
Well that's what I'm thinking - send the guy his $30 and thank him for his time. It's not like you'll be ahead picking up the barney top and having it painted.
That said....I'd almost pay $30 to see a picture of you driving down the highway in a red car with a purple roof. hehe.
Can't remember the last time it rained....
but if you really don't want to go and pick it up...i'll take it from your hands for double your price....might be nice to have a coupe for 2 months during the winter....painting it is going to be a B.tch though... I only got a little brush to cover scratches.
Nicolaas, If you're serious about buying this hardtop for $60, see the PM I sent you!
Anybody else interested in buying a beautiful purple hardtop for the grand sum of $60? Located near Newport Beach, CA.
I almost went for the repaint route but I was quoted $850 to repaint a white one correctly. Maybe because I have metallic black it costs more. I couldn't argue with a correct OEM black metallic top for $200. They are out there for cheap if you really look.
The black top I'm actually buying is $500. Not sure if it's metallic. I got a seat of the pants quote from my local body shop for $300-$400 to repaint.
