Oh yeah, before draining the oil I checked the stick too.
Leading evidence: 'Check stick too' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I checked under the car and ran the motor while all the time listening to it and watching the tips for smoke.

I changed my oil/filter this w/e (put in Mobile 10-W40, but that's another subject lol!).

Fill it up, run the engine, shut it off and check the dipstick in 30 minutes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay so from this point forward I am going to just drive the car and if anything bad happens then so be it!!!
It has been maybe 2000 miles since I did the last oil change. Nothing leaks, nothing burns or smokes in my 03 Targa. All is well in the world and even better since I bought a 7 yr old SUV to drive around during the week. What could go wrong?
So this weekend the dash lights up to tell me that I am low on oil. This was a new warning that I never knew of or had seen before. I had watched the internal meter and could see if I was low but never had the warning come on.
I checked under the car and ran the motor while all the time listening to it and watching the tips for smoke. Nothing! Sounds as good and smooth as it did months ago.
Not to be spooked I went and bought the oil/filter to pull the remaining oil out. I drained the oil. All 9 qts of it!!! So what the F*** is going on that the car tells me that I am low on oil? Not the meter but the dash lighting up like it would when your belt is not on or you are low on fuel. That type of warning.
Oh yeah, before draining the oil I checked the stick too. Nothing on it.
This is the second time the car tells me that the oil is low and the stick shows nothing but that there was a full compliment of oil in the car.
In my frustration with the car BS-ing me into spending time and money I buttoned up the car and noticed that the drain plug ring was sitting in the drain pan. Double F***.
So off to Wally World to get a fresh pan to drain my clean oil out just so I can pour it all back in when I fix this latest screw up. What a waste of time.
Seriously.
So what's the deal with my car? Is there something that I am not resetting that is causing this issue?
I'm a little confused but if your dip stick doesn't show any oil, and your internal guage shows you are low on oil and a warning light comes on saying you are low on oil, YOU ARE LOW ON OIL!
I gotta agree with JimB on this one.
Hey, FWIW I had a similiar problem with my BMW motorcycle. Except, I overfilled it. Twice. Don't ask.
I got lots of practice draining and refilling it yesterday. What fun. At least it was only 4 (++) quarts, not 9.
Heck, the old 993 was 12 quarts, I believe. And a royal PITA to do, what with two drains and two filters and you've gotta take off the wheel and half the bodywork. Stupid damn car.
Luv my 996.
Michael
My container is a 9qt container and it was full to the point that I couldn't get the plugs in it.
Did I measure the old oil by putting it back into the now empty bottles? I will just to have some proof as to how much came out.
I put in what the book says to put in regarding volume. I will re-read the page located in the 'capacities' section but I am certain that the change w/filter wasn't more than 9 qts.
One would think that to be grossly low on oil that a 9qt catch bin would be much lower than being filled to capacity like it was.
I feel your pain. Try to notice if the level meter reads 0 oil when you've been parked on a level lot or driveway for 30 minutes or more.
I just lost 1 bar of oil somewhere yet the dipstick reads slighltly above the full mark.
Just put in enough oil so the dipstick reads full. It may be 8 - 10 quarts, but it does not matter. Sometimes more oil comes out when you drain than others. The manual is a guide only. Fill it up, run the engine, shut it off and check the dipstick in 30 minutes. Add accordingly.
If you are in fact draining 9 or so quarts of oil, then both measuring devices must somehow not be functioning. While the electronic part could malfunction, I don't understand why the dipstick was dry. It would be interesting to see where the dipstick end is located in the crankcase, and whether the electronic sending unit is near it. Although I don't suggest you do this, you could fill it all the way and see if the gauge or dipstick at some point registers a reading. If it takes more than 10 or 12 quarts, then the sending unit and where the dipstick is supposed to end up are somehow askew. No, I'm not much help, but these are my thoughts.

I intended to go home last night and pour the used oil into the quart containers so that I could tell you folks exactly what came out but I got side line doing yard work. I'll try to do that tonight and report back.
I did look in the book again and I put in the 8.7 that it calls for w/filter change. Some of you sound like you don't go by the book and go by the stick.
I put in 9.5 qts., and both the electronic reader and the dipstick say it's 1/2 way between "add" and "full"...as you can tell, nobody's ever accused me of being to technical.
