I'm surprised to see them using 0W - 40 in the Indy car engine because as you have said horsepower is priority #1 and engine protection is almost an afterthought.

I did read somewhere that they are leasing the engines from Honda so they probably do not care about the longevity of the engines otherwise they would be using 15W - 50.

What the he** are they thinking, their RMS is going to leak like an old worn out faucet. I did read somewhere that they are leasing the engines from Honda so they probably do not care about the longevity of the engines otherwise they would be using 15W - 50. I just hope the oil slick coming out the back of their car doesn't make the track too slippery and cause a multi car accident or get them black flagged.

Actually, Honda is a better engineered and manufactured engine than is the Porsche flat -6, so, although I would not recommend using the Mobil 0W40, the quality of the engine will probably mask much of it's damage where the Porsche does not. Additonally, in a pure racing engine, you are looking for as much power as possible and not long term engine protection and often make compromises to get it.

Yes, thicker oil is HP robbing but at a place like Indy where, at least the front runners , run flat the whole lap, increased oil protection is necessary. Especially so when these engines have an interference fit from crank to rod interface. These types of engines MUST be warm BEFORE they are started. Oil temps of at least 75C is required by the engine supplier before startup. In road course trim where the engine can breathe -some-, oil of 20w is commonplace.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
