Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guy ran a red light. Hit me at about 50-60 km/h dead on. Boys are these cars solid. They charged him with running a red light. Anyone has suggestions on how I ensure that my car is considered a total loss?

POST 2Original post

That s*cks...Glad you are not hurt. Unfortunately you are at the hands of the insurance adjusters.

POST 3Original post

glad you walked away ok.... that is pretty serious. I would imagine the car is totalled.

POST 4Original post

glad you are ok. it will work itself out, eventually...... what do you reckon the market value of your car is?

POST 6Original post

Oh god..I feel your pain. I'm so sorry for your loss. Let us know if there is anything we can do!!! Just hope they total it and you won't pay ****, as long as his insurance is good.

POST 7Original post

Holy smokes! Man do i feel for you. Glad you weren't hurt but crap, what a way to start summer out. Bummer.

POST 8Original post

By the way it looks, it might be a total loss. How much was the car worth before the accident?

POST 9Original post

This really hits home... looks like you and I have identical cars. I was in Toronto this morning before flying to Mexico. I feel for you, brother, maybe the Senators will take the cup and you'll feel better! I think the ins co will total it, so hopefully you can pick up a new baby. Wish I knew how to help you make that happen...

POST 10Original post

Very sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident, but I am happy to see that you walked away without any major injuries. Given the apparent damage and what looks like it could involve a bent frame....I'm not sure that a "fix-it" would be in order. I'm not a body and fender man, but the unibody doesn't lend itself well to being put on a straightning rack....not to mention your loss of value (diminished value) when it hits the Carfax report. I truly feel for you.

POST 11Original post

damn...... glad you're okay...........no idea on how to total out the car though.....

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone. They are still evaluating the car. The guy who hit me had the same insurance company as me so that should ensure a smooth process. Will keep you posted. Important thing (as you all pointed out), is that nobody got hurt (even the other driver). I was impressed to have a few pedestrian come see me after the accident and provide their phone numbers telling me that he had clearly ran the red light and that they would be happy to confirm same to the cops if I needed them. Nice that people have such decency.

POST 13Original post

Well, the post crash fire damage would do it... (kidding) Glad to hear you are OK. Airbags went off, I assume?

POST 14Original post

thats not totaled, 15-18k max its gonna be fixxed

POST 15Original post

I'm really sorry about what happened to you and your car. I'm glad the humans are okay, but the car looks pretty rough. I hope they total it for you.

POST 16Original post

Assuming it's the same as in the US - don't take it to the shop they recommend (unless you know it really is the best), but take it to the best darn place you can find.

POST 17Original post

x2. If you want any recommendations for body shops, let me know. I saw a rear-ended 996 getting brought back from the dead last year... beautiful work.

POST 18Original post

That's not even close to being totalled, Porsche front ends are quite resilient and easy to repair since there are no real mechanicals. Unless the driveshaft is messed up or there is serious suspension damage... Definite frame damage though. You may be able to get diminished value compensation from the insurance company... but thats quite a fiasco to sort out.

POST 19Original post

Oh man that sucks! Glad you're alright. It looks like it happened on University Ave? People in this city are constantly running red lights, usually on their cellphones! Jumper5836 had some work done on his C4S last fall and it is flawless. Here's a link of where he took it: linky...

POST 21Original post

That really stinks. Damage was only on the front end? They might angle for repair vs totaling it since these cars are worth $$$. What was the other guy driving?

POST 23Original post

Wow - that is a really bad beat. Glad everyone was ok. The only reason people are decent and take the time to offer assistance to you is because you do not live in America. No one here gives a $hit about anyone else. I have to admit that it does not look totaled to me. I HOPE it is so that you don't have to argue loss of value, but it looks like a fixer to me. The drivetrain has to be worth 1/4 the value at least, and that is fine I'm sure. Best of luck.

POST 24Original post

Pick your own bodyshop. Work with the bodyshop, not the adjuster to get it totaled. The insurance companies have "preferred" body shops that cut them a break and sometimes cut corners with your repair. If that fails, claim dimunition of value. That might push the cost to repair and loss of value beyond the threshold to total it. Since it the same insurer on both cars, make them give you a rental car so you take your time making decisions. Ex wife had a minor crash causing a slightly tweeked front subframe on a MBZ. I picked the bodyshop and they argued for three weeks to get the adjuster to approve it. The insurance company's preferred body shop would have rolled over and not fixed it and I would have never known.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think what might help me to have it totalled is the fact that it is a C4S (hopefully front differential damage, etc.) and that both airbags went off (not sure how much these are but apparently quite a lot). The other guy was driving an Infiniti G35x (2006). Nice car - but I don't feel bad.

POST 27Original post

"Frame" damage? Guys, this is a Porsche. Ever heard of monoque construction? That's no where near totalled.

POST 28Original post

Be very careful. The company should appoint two different independent adjustors. One for him and one for you. There is a conflict of interest. Remember an insurance company's goal is to pay the least amount of money. Glad you are ok-that is what is important. Cars can be replaced and fixed, humans much more difficult. Car looks totaled to me. You can not really tell until they open it up. At that velocity, the car will do what it is suppose to do, and spread out the forces through out the car to avoid the human occupents from sustaining serious injury. Thus, there may be a lot of hidden damage.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Latest update from body shop puts repairs at $28K (Canadian dollars). Awaiting to hear back from insurance company.

POST 30Original post

Wow, that was a helluva hit. $28K plus diminished value. My car is being appraised by an independent appraiser right now after just getting the car back. Total damange to mine was $9k US. The appraiser said as a rule of thumb, the diminished value can be between 10-20% of the retail price. Sounds like yours would be near the upper end.

POST 32Original post

ML - let me know where you ended up taking your car? I have a very recent similar experience here in Toronto that I hope to be able to steer you clear of a couple land mines. PM me if you want or better yet e-mail me.

POST 33Original post

Very sorry to hear about your accident but glad that you are OK. Not to sound too cynical, but do you think a body shop would not want an excessive repair list where the cost would surpass the totaled value and thus lose the "job" completely?

POST 34Original post

I too am happy you are all ok! I am sorry but have to agree I doubt they will total your car. Good luck with the insurance and make them get you a car that is like yours as a rental, ie do not take the ____ cheap car.

POST 35Original post

You didn't hear this from me but, here's little bedtime story for you. Many, many years ago when I was a youngun', someone I know owned a Porsche Turbo. His buddy was driving it, got on the boost a little hard in a corner, and wrapped it around a telephone pole. Luckily, they walked away without a scratch. The car however was messed up bad - bent frame, etc. It was taken to the most highly respected body guy in the area for an estimate. He argued and argued with the adjuster over the phone, said there was no way any shop on earth could make the car "right" again, and that it was a waste of time to do anything but part it out. In the end, the car came up $900 short of being totalled, according to the adjuster. So the owner is standing in the body shop with the body guy, who was a bit of a good ol' boy. At one point body guy looks over and says "You know, that rear window glass costs $1,000 to replace, too bad it ain't broken". He then walked over to his tool chest, handed the owner a hammer, and said "I'm goin' to lunch now, have a nice day." And yes, the story did have a happy ending.

POST 36Original post

I would make damn sure you get diminished value if they try and fix it. There is no argument that your car is worth far less now than it was pre accident.

POST 39Original post

I was the good ol boy..with the toolbox! But your right....what is the point if the difference is 900 bucks....i is totalled. But ML's P doesnt' look totalled..and the value of the car is much more than 28K canadian. Make sure they repair it well!!! glad you drove a german car....it saved your life!

POST 40Original post

Push the darn insurance company hard. I am in the middle of a battle of Diminished value claim(s) on my wife's BMW. Other party was at fault so we are going against them as a 3rd party. We just got the car back after nearly 2 months of repairs. It's a 2004 BMW 325 CIc worth about 31k retail that had rear frame rails replaced , had to be put on a straightener and had about 3 dozen new parts applied, plus tons of body work. $9500k in repairs and bound to grow slightly as I work the final kinks out. I just had an independent Diminished value appraisal done. They came back with an estimation of 35% (expected loss on sale) which they state is standard on a higher end car with frame related damage. Not sure we will actually get it but there is plenty of precedence. In your case, that 35% retail plus the repairs could easily surpass the 50% valuation which can trigger a total loss (depending, of course, on ins. company). Push them on every angle, and as stated, find a worthy repair shop and demand all OEM parts to ensure repair estimates are maximized. (the ins. co. will try to get you to accept refurb and recycled crap parts and body panels and even tell you they won't warrant OEM but will warrant the cheaper crap - what a racket) RB
