Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean with only one slightly obvious nick' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean with only one slightly obvious nick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've heard many stories about engine and tranny failure and RMS stuff. Does this stuff happen often? This car is in very good condition, what would you say the value is? How would she be as a short (about 15 miles a day) daily driver?
Keith,
These cars serve perfectly as daily drivers, excluding snow of course. I've been shopping for 996's for what seems forever. This car....in very good condition should go between 32K - 35K, depending on options.
As far as RMS issue....I think if the car does not suffer from it now....it should be in the clear. Others can chime in with regard to that issue. From what I know....even if it did rear it's ugly head down the road....I understand that the repair is under 1k.
Best of luck in your search. If you want some leads on some peaches that I found online...pm me. They are scattered all around the country....but you really have look hard for the better deals. Also, try Pelican Parts ads....I've seen some 996's sell for absolute bargains there. None recently though...I look there every day.
Have fun,
I would say that you have a 5-10% chance of developing an engine/rms problem in a '99-996. Those odds drop each year. The car you are asking about probably shouldn't cost more than 30k but if I was you I would look for one 2001 or newer. The engineers seemed to slowly solve the kinks as time went on.
Well, I guess I'm not the only 951 guy looking to hop into a 996. Are you looking to keep the 51 or get rid of it? From what I have seen, on the East Coast anyway, that car would go for around 30k round abouts. Need more info on it to make a good call though. What is maintenance history, any warranty work, options, lalala.
But, it should be easy to talk you into it.
Buy it, or else....
Thanks guys, I guess I just read too much of this RMS engine failure stuff and freaked. The car is very clean with only one slightly obvious nick on the bumper. The online ad says its a 3.6l so I'll have to get to the bottom of that when I see it tomorrow. Oh yeah, it has litronics or whatever they're called. The guy is asking around $30k and I figured that was good with the amount of miles it has.
I ws going to take issue with your post, but I think I know what you are saying. You are talking about the chances of developing a problem from this point forward, and of course I believe that you are talking about a premature problem, i.e., low mileage 996. All engines will eventually fail over time and high mileage.
