When I had my new engine I replaced the oil at around 3200 miles just before a track event.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil at around 3200 miles just' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

According to Porsche, their new car engines/deliveries from the factory do not require a break-in period (they are already broken in - and every 6th or 7th one is Autobahn tested).

Porsche recomends and I use 0-40 in my cup car and it performs perfectly.

Suggestion
If you insist on going, again keep the RPMs down and I'd probably change the oil after the DE...and then only replace it with Mobil 1 0-W40 (the only recommended oil by Porsche).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I will be attending a beginner DE event this weekend. My brand new (austausch) engine now has 3K miles on it with original oil. Should I change the oil before the event, or after?
Thanks
This is just me and i know every driver here in rennlist have their own way and opinion.
I'm running DE next week at VIR. I'm planning to have fresh 15W-50( or 10W-40) Mobil 1 for it.
After - you're good to 5,000 miles (in my book) or 15,000 if you go by the manual.
Do the DE then do the oil change - maybe even send it for analysis at a lab for your own interest and peace of mind.
If you have a fresh engine, I would change the oil first. If this is not the first oil change and you have only 3000 miles on the oil, change it after the DE.
Best,
On new broken in motor I still make it a habit of changing out the oil after the first 1000 miles. Why take the chance of some machining debris ruining the internals, oil is relatively inexpensive.
I personally would change it before the DE event.
Don't change it because it at least has the correct oil in it now
If you run the DE with it completely full expect a lot of smoke from the exhaust too. To avoid this run it about a 1/2 quart low.
Let me try to summarize (ignoring oil weight/viscosity)
Since this is my first oil change, there may be some benefit to having clean oil when putting the motor through its paces. (This will be my first DE event, the motor will probably not work that hard)
So, as I have the oil (secret viscosity) and a filter on hand, I'll change it, and then again in 3 or 5K miles. A few beginner laps should not reduce oil life by that much.
Here's another $.0212324 (interest)
Go to the DE if you want but take it
very
easy (i.e do not exceed ~4500 rpm). This will be harder to do than you think. Even those in Driver's Training (beginner's DE) push their car. Afterall, what's the point of doing a DE if you're not pushing your car a bit? No need to change the oil yet, wait until after.
According to Porsche, their new car engines/deliveries from the factory do not require a break-in period (they are already broken in - and every 6th or 7th one is Autobahn tested). In addition, the recommended oil change interval has been bumped up to 2 years/20K miles (from 1 year/15K) - even for the first one. Personally, I would still change it annually if you're in an area with extreme temperature fluctuation (like MN...or PA). This is a result of condensation and likely winter storage.
However, it is unclear to me where your engine came from - I assume it's an OEM Porsche replacement engine? Or is it a used engine that you found elsewhere with 3,000 miles? Either way, a DE can put a tremendous amount of stress on the engine - particularly a new one. As such, if it were me, I'd skip the DE until I had about 7,500 or so on the clock. If you insist on going, again keep the RPMs down and I'd probably change the oil after the DE...and then only replace it with Mobil 1 0-W40 (the only recommended oil by Porsche).
YMMV.
I screwed up and tracked my car with 0w-40 in it
....
OH MY
...what will become of me(and better yet, my car)? I know that my RMS and my IMS and my MAF and my XYZ are doomed, maybe even my ABS and my vario ramio. I know this because instaed of driving real fast I was staring at my gauges all the way around the track just like I was taught at Skip Barber
When will it happen
Need help PLEASE
If anyone ever listens to Porsche again let this be a lesson for you
This board is great....thanks in advance for all your help
Huh?! I can't tell if you're being facetious or not.
I've done many DE's over the years. There has never been an issue, nor will there be. What's more, this is not only the advice of Porsche to only use 0-W40 (I've also heard of 5W-30 used as an alternative), it's the advice of my mechanic who happens to also be the chief mechanic for a Ruf/Porsche race team (his team has set a number of hill climb records). That is old school thinking (i.e."I need to use a heavier weight oil at the track"). The new engines are built to higher tolerances and with the Vario-Cam technology you have the potential of actually damage the engine by using a heavier weight oil.
I ran 15-50 in my 996 stock race car and it's performed perfectly. Porsche recomends and I use 0-40 in my cup car and it performs perfectly. I think everyone should find something new to worry about.
As for changing oil. If you do it yourself it's cheap insurance. Always error on the side of doing it too often. Most racers change it either every event or every other event.
That's true.
OK, everyone, I'm proposing a new philosophy on oil changes. Here's how it's going to work:
1.) If someone is thinking about changing their oil but not sure if it's too soon, then they should just change it.
2.) If someone disagrees with the manual recommendation and thinks it should be changed twice as often, then they should change it twice as often.
3.) If someone doesn't care and just goes by the manual, they should continue following the manual's guide.
That should take care of most questions, since even though people will post to get recommendations, they will still change their oil if they feel more comfortable doing so.
... since even though people will post to get recommendations, they will still change their oil if they feel more comfortable doing so. (I have not figured out how to get your qhote into the gray box)
Kind of like one's wife asking if she should...(insert rhetorical question), knowing she will do ... (whatever she already decided).
You are partially correct, except that I have never had a car (or motor) with 0 miles on it. At least with this car, this is no longer a problem. And yes, I changed the oil last night.
Thanks
Stefan
Steven - when your car begins to turn gray, you know that is the beginning of the end for her. As the "ailment" advances, spreading to the transmission, the suspension, and finally to the cup holders, she will turn "lemming sivler" and become just another of the ga-zillion silver cars on the road. Do her a favor and end it quickly. Don't let her suffer!
