Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Dash goes well past 180 and checked temp with durametric.
Leading evidence: 'Check temp' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check temp' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have you checked temps via ODBII and/or Durametric?

Rick, you should replace both resistors on each fan.

Neither fan/stage works with engine running (settings 180 deg and 200(?) deg).

Engine running I cannot start the fans using durametric.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ello,
My 2000 996 C2 Cabrio has been overheating. Trouble shooting led to the cooling fans not turning on as they should (Stage 1 or 2).
I have replaced the driver side fan and the thermostat, all relays and 2 fuses.
Current Status
Stage 1 fans turn on with air con.
Neither fan/stage works with engine running (settings 180 deg and 200(?) deg).
With Durametric:
Key on (engine not running) I can start/stopboth fans and both stages using durametric
Engine running I cannot start the fans using durametric.
I have a new engine temp sensor. Both the temp in cluster and in durametric are working fine with the original s havent switched it out.
Any idea's? all I can think is it could be the ecu(?)
I appreciate any help.
Thank You!
Rick
If stage 1 fans go on with air conditioning, then the low speed fans are fine, so are resistors...
The fans are working, so the DME should turn on the fans
How do you know you are overheating?
Durametric doesn't turn the fans on/off if the engine is running. The engine must be stopped and the key on.
Also, Durametric only turns on the fans for about 5 seconds. So you have to be quick to see if they're running. Or go by sound, or have a helper.
The dash gauge is not all that accurate. On my 99, the needle can go all way to the last white line before the low speed fans turn on. This is about 98C as reported by an ODBII module collecting data from the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor). So it appears my engine might be running too hot, but in reality it is not.
Have you checked temps via ODBII and/or Durametric?
OP: Don't know if it has anything to do w/your problem but I "discovered" that if I turn off the fan in my 2000 C4 Cab, the car will overheat all the way to the red at 250 but if the fan in the car is turned on its all good w/the temp between 180 and the next hashmark (200 or 215?) but not all the way to the red.
So, turning off the fan in the car must be turning off the cooling fans too.
Was told by someone here that it shouldn't matter if the fan in the car is on or not and turning off the fan in the car should NOT affect the cooling fans. Don't know if that's true or not but, until the car starts to overheat w/the fans on, I'm just going to keep the fan in the car on and am not going to worry about it.
