Suggestion
Since the system is drained, would probably be worth pulling the front bumper and checking the radiators?

Suggestion
You may want to check if the water pump is the correct one for your car, when I replaced mine some time ago I attempted to install the replacement and it would not fit quite right, It wouldn't spin freely, after some comparison with the pump I was replacing I discovered that the pumps were different, the vendor had shipped one for a 997 which has a slightly larger impeller.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After chasing down an over heating problem I found this!
I spent ALL day back flushing the block by putting a hose in the center hole in the block that the pump draws coolant from and distributes to the holes in the block to the left and right of that hole. After about 8 hours or so of plugging and unplugging the square hole and catching the water in a green bowl like I was panning for gold, I was able to reconstruct this mutch of the impeller with the pieces I managed to find/flush out..
So here is my dilemma, I am essentially missing one fin, how many pieces it's in who knows. I could have maybe even missed one or 2 little pieces in the gushes of water but I will assume it's still in the engine. My question is this, is there anyone here that has opted not to tear down their engine when experiencing this situation and did you have any problems? My other question is where else should I look for this last piece? I want to exhaust all options that do not involve me dropping the engine and tearing it down again. My Hope's are that I find it so I do not have to tear it down. That is for reading! Worse case I will tear it down.
Unfortunately that piece, or those pieces, could be anywhere in the cooling system. Radiators and heater core as well as all the little nooks and crannies. I'm sure we will hear from someone who has experienced this. I'd be inclined to disassemble every except the engine and do several complete flushes. Maybe one every year?
I wish you the best,
How many miles on that water pump?
Best of luck.
I would to think to just keep flushing a few more times. A complete tear down seems like over kill to me but Im just guessing. Wheres that Porschetech3 guy?
Since the system is drained, would probably be worth pulling the front bumper and checking the radiators? Would be an opportune time to clean them as well.
This thing only had about 8k on it at most! Got it from Pelican I'm sure they will replace it but I sure as hell don't want another one from them. I will need to demand my money back, wish they would pay for a tear down!
Opinions of why this happens, not that it changes your predicament. Maybe this has been beat to death, but metal or composite replacement? Which brands to avoid or use?
I will check and post it here so we can avoid it. Does anyone know of a good alternative to the OEM? Maybe a part number? The pierburg unit seems identical. I will likely just spring for the Porsche brand. I thought that is what they sent me but I know now it wasn't. I paid a good amount for it!
The part number depends on if you have 996.01, .02, .03, or .04 (and if .03 if it's a 2005 engine). That said, use the year and model and put your vin in the order for the correct part guarantee in one of the discounting dealers (getporscheparts, germanautopartssource, etc) and you will see the price for the OE isnt that different from the OEM.
Bummer, Mileage doesn't matter as much as it's age. How long ago was it installed? The impeller is in the coolant 24/7 and JR recommends 4 year replacements for that reason...Could this have been the "zip" sound you asked about previously, or did you figure that one out? I could imagine that sound if the impeller was scraping the block during rotation.
The newer Pierburg units use a better composite these days.
It is possible that someone may have had a similar issue and forced the new one on. I replaced mine as a precaution, it was not damaged. I'm not saying that this is the case, but there seems to be a lot of damage to yours. Do not get one with a metal impeller, imagine the damage to your engine case if the bearing or impeller failed.
Brings back water pump memories....AMC matador changed water pump in the 70’s v 8 with ac,it seemed liked everything in the world was connected to that pump......Put replacement pump in... decided to spin the pump after everything was connected except belts .....wouldnt turn
took it all back apart impeller not pressed on all the way.Heligear you have a good point,The op’s impellers look like they are equally fractured. Regards.
I had a similar issue on my youngest sons 02 Boxster a few years ago. here is the link to the thread ..

I made some wire mesh catch screens to fit the block so that if that ever happens again, no pieces will go into the engine. It would really suck to completely tear down an engine and NOT find the pieces !!
great minds think alike!!! Hahah I did the exact same thing! I will be making some nicer ones out of something that will not corrode. Any ideas of what material to use? I'm thinking Stainles maybe?
Didn't that mesh thing come up before on here with someone saying it could block the coolant from flowing if the propeller broke which could be really bad. I like the idea just thought this was brought up previously.
Now if the passage did get blocked, would it show up on the temp gauge before anything bad happened.
986 Boxster, nice cars. Miss my 00 S.
It was Jake Raby who said it, and no, if the passage were totally blocked it would not show up because there would be no flowing coolant to show the increased temp in the sensor location.
I haven't seen a perfect engine yet !!
Ask the OP if his temperature gauge registered hot, he didn't even have blades so there could be no coolant flow.
If you lose enough blades to totally block both passages, you are not going to have any coolant flow anyway..
