Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey folks - I hope I am posting this in the right forum. I plan to be an owner of 2004 C4S very soon. As I am doing by due diligence research and communicating with the seller, I was told the engine was replaced under warranty in 2009. The current owner has all receipts for the service and the warranty repair. As I was talking with the current owner I was trying to determine what engine was used in the replacement. The receipt mentions 996-100-995-DX as the replacement and the seller also showed an e-mail from a Porsche service department stating that the engine was - M98/03A with the corresponding serial number. The service manager explained in the e-mail that all M98/03 engines came with the updated IMS parts.
I have googled the M98 engine and can not find anything that confirms this. Looking for a little rudder steer, I certainly maybe missing something, please dont kill the newbie.
No such engine... Typo, ignorance, or misinformation ? Regardless of reason, this seems to be a disturbing trend when it comes to the sale of these cars... The sellers initials wouldn't happen to be JD would they?
Thanks much for the info, that is what I suspected as well - I hope the typo is correct. The car is local to me and I will be getting underneath of it before any money exchanges hands. I will make sure to look for the engine stamp to verify what engine is there.
Thanks again.
Alright - so I think I figured it out after a lot more research. I believe the engine code was a typo by the Service manager to the owner or tech to the Service Manager. I have seen numerous pictures now and a number of the stamp jobs (particularly on the Porsche Warranty engines) are hard to read. Doesnt excuse that a Porsche service manager should know there are NO M98 engines. I believe the engine code should be m96/03AT66568244
Since the current owner has the receipt for the factory replacement engine, the above number would make sense. I have now learned how to decipher these numbers, but is my assumption correct that ALL 2005 Porsche replacement engines received the larger single row, non-serviceable, IMSB?
You're correct, it would be M96/03AT.
I'm not sure when the absolute cutoff was for larger bearing, but you do probably have the larger one.
Only way that I know of to be certain is to pull the transmission and clutch.
If it were me, I'd wait until I needed a clutch and then I'd check.
If you do have the larger one, pull the seal and don't worry about it.
Looks like you're using due diligence to avoid a nightmare buying situation. Definitely want to confirm that it is a factory replacement. If it is, you'll have the most robust IMS bearing - the 6305 "M97" bearing. There are well known to have very few failures. But the biggest concern for me on this engine would be cylinder bore scoring. You should really consider having a pre-purchase inspection carried out and make sure they at least examine the bank2 cylinders for any scoring.
