Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Plastic or Metal Water Pump Impeller - discuss pros/cons What's better in the long run? Plastic will let go earlier, but plastic may not damage engine as much? Metal obviously can destroy the engine? How long does the average water pump last before they start letting go? Which manufacturer do you recommend?

POST 2Original post

This seems like a no brainer to me. When the bearing on the main shaft of the pump gets worn, the "fins" on the impeller move beyond their proscribed radius. When this happens, a metal impeller will start carving the block. I think you want to avoid this at all costs. A plastic impeller will break up and distribute pieces in the coolant system. While not great, its more recoverable than a damaged block. Whether the metal fins last longer is not a consideration. The main shaft bearing probably lasts the same amount of time for both.

POST 3Original post

M96 water pump engine should be replaced preemptively at 60K miles. At that interval, you don't care what the impeller is.

So if I do the 60K replace, I should be good for the metal impeller, yes?

POST 5Original post

It’s your car. Do what you want. I’m not using metal impellers. But, if you are comfortable with them, go for it.

POST 6Original post

Nope, replace every 4-5 years regardless of mileage. Metal will destroy your block when the bearing fails. What does common sense tell you here?

POST 7Original post

I will second what you have been told - never ever put a metal impeller water pump in your M96 engine. When it decides to take a dump, it will carve out your water pump impeller cavity, and there is no way to recover from that. You will not get the pressure and flow anymore and your engine will fail. You probably wouldn't even know it was doing that until it is too late. Use the plastic impeller water pumps only!
