Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install white ones' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install white ones' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I swapped the cluster *case on my last 996 for a 40AE unit, then applied a blue sticker for the tach. That worked well for a while til I sold the car.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
I've done plenty of them (gauge face swaps- even did them on a 991.1) and can recommend being the most careful when removing the needles.

Suggestion
Sometimes they (needle) will stick so just use even pressure with a trim removal tool.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am planning on getting a 996 C4S. Many of them have the black instrument cluster that I am seeing for sale. I like the white instrument cluster a lot more and was wondering if you could swap out the white parts or if you could swap out just the internals to a white cluster so the odometer and trim information is still the same?
I am not sure if this off-topic, but my white cluster faces are horribly difficult to see at night. The lights are working but are vintage 1967 VW illumination. I am in starting the cluster swap and seriously considering keeping the donor car's black faces.
Easy to do if you have any skill. I've done plenty of them (gauge face swaps- even did them on a 991.1) and can recommend being the most careful when removing the needles. Sometimes they (needle) will stick so just use even pressure with a trim removal tool. You can check out YouTube as well
Yes indeed, my 2000 m.y. C2 came with optional colored gauges, in Natural Brown to match the leather, recently I noticed even during the day I was struggling to decipher the numbers.. upon studying up close at first I assumed oh they are 3D effect decals but alas they are all peeling i am thinking about a warranty claim as they have only lasted 26 years
LOL, let us know on that warranty claim. Too funny, yeah the "3D" appearance is from the face itself is delaminating. I went with white faces for all the gauges but ended up switching the tach to red and left the others white. Love the look now!
I swapped the cluster *case on my last 996 for a 40AE unit, then applied a blue sticker for the tach. That worked well for a while til I sold the car. The white OEM ones are aluminum as I understand it, X71 option code. Seems like there are a lot of options on the aftermarket now.
